With the premiere of the Assassin's Creed Valhalla trailer, we coincidentally have an Assassin's Creed game to review this week! Exploring historical locations and taking down important figures is a staple of these games, and in Assassin's Creed III Remastered we load up in the animus to go to the Revolutionary War. But before we get to meet our colonial characters, AC3 has one of the craziest openings of all the modern plot points of the Assassin Creed games. Once in the past we can find naval battles, the young America ready to split, and our trusty tomahawk to help solve all our problems.

While I know it's far from perfect, I love AC3. It reminds me of christmas 2012 when I had a nice week alone, doing nothing but playing this game. Such a chill time. And as someone who is not from the US, not knowing its detailed history, the game made me read a lot on Wikipedia. The subversions didn't affect me, but it did help me appreciate history more.

You make lots of valid points. Personally, I enjoyed the gradual setup of Connor (which would have been even more compelling if the head continued into his own trilogy of games) and the way they introduce your future targets as allies of Haytham before the reveal that he is a templar and the main villain. Haytham was actually a very compelling character and the sections where Connor and him interacted were a blast story-wise. I also appreciate that they tried something very different with this game and didn't just copy the Ezio trilogy. However, it's basically the Assassin's Creed 1 to Black Flag's Assassin's Creed II, meaning, it feels more like a partially failed, partially successful experiment than a really great game. Plus, at the time it clearly seemed to emulate RDR in some aspects, like the hunting mechanics, the wilderness and so on, but mission structure felt very restrictive even back in 2012 and there was no equivalent to random events in RDR1 and later GTAV, which made the world feel more alive. I did enjoy the more personal and story driven approach to the Homestead missions and Assassin brotherhood building missions, though, instead of just funneling some money to build your settlement, you could through story missions actually learn about the people who live there and see the Homestead evolve from untamed barren wilderness to flourishing settlement.

I honestly enjoyed this game a lot and I even sympathised more with Connor than with Ezio; introverts stick together I guess. But seriously, as someone who is not from America I had little to no historical knowledge about the USA and its history. But AC3 presented it in a clever, fun, interesting, and sometimes emotional way. If you think about it, we had spent 5 years under the simple assumption that Assassins = good, Templars = evil, but AC3 introduced nuance to the franchise by allowing us to play as Haytham and then Connor, and then their unfolding relationship as well as Connor's fruitless political alliances made it all seem so raw and hopeless. Even though Connor strived to come to terms with the Templars (Haytham), he unknowingly failed and resorted to murder them. And as he tried to stay true to the Assassins' ethics, he allowed the native peoples to be used and betrayed. Perhaps if he had been more willing to deal with the Templars the natives might have had a slightly different end than they did with Washington. Well this is going to bore people to death, sorry for the rant.

Great commentary. As someone who gets into the roleplay of the characters in games, Washington's betrayal of the Connor's nation made me feel it right to drop the Assassin's uniforms and go back to buckskins. Adherence to ideologies of colonists led to the loss of their home and that couldn't be reconciled.

I'm one of the odd ones who loved this game. It has some definite issues. Mostly with mission design and story IMO. I think they underutilized the revolutionary war setting honestly. At least during the campaign. They kind of just show the beginning of the war and then skip to the end. But the setting, I loved it. I loved the free roaming frontier. The huge meta hunting and trading system. The naval battles. The season changes. I loved hunting squads of redcoats in the woods from the trees. I loved the homestead story missions. I loved getting into wild foot chases with soldiers in the cities. And I loved the brutal feel of the combat. For me, these outweighed the sloppier missions and somewhat lackluster story and main character.

I might be one of the only people who actually likes Desmond and misses his presence in the narrative. I miss his conversations with Shaun and Rebecca, and honestly he gave the Templar plot focus. Since his departure we get all the past action without any real reference to how the present is being affected. Anybody remember the Juno build up and then we never heard from her again? If you don’t read the extended lore you’d never know how that ended. I wish they would put more effort back into the modern day storyline, hopefully they do that with Layla moving forward.

@@simoneidson21 I was 26 when the game came out. I did play the homestead missions. I actually got 100% of the achievements as well. So spent plenty of time with Connor. He was bland and boring pretty much all around. The homestead missions did little to flesh him out. Sure, they expanded on his willingness to help out those in need which is a redeeming quality but quite frankly, just the minor side characters he interacted with were far more interesting than him. He just has such a negative attitude throughout the game. He is always angry or pouting about something. He can be a bit of an ass at times when other characters don't warrant such treatment and his treatment of Achilles just made me want to slap him in the face. The disrespect he showed toward the man who took him in, fed him, gave him room and board, educated him, and trained him as an assassin was absolutely abysmal. When he wasn't exhibiting the aforementioned negative character flaws, he was just boring and bland, like I said. Just do a search online and you'll find that one of the biggest criticisms levied against him is that he has no personality.

And AC4's ancestral story was a fine AC story, as it showed how a person outside of the Assassin-Templar war was entangled in it and eventually became a follower of the Creed. However AC Rogue was very rushed and poorly written, the game was made out of the remaining unused featured of AC3 (River Valley, North Atlantic and New York) and AC4's gameplay! It should have been released in 2015 or in 2016 with AC Unity (and not in 2014) with a deeper story and understanding of the Templar Ideology.

Well as a Canadian I can maybe help give a non-American perspective on this game's story and intrigue. I like history quite a lot so I absolutely love the Assassin's Creed franchise. Unfortunately the American Revolution is something I've never found interesting in the slightest so I wasn't familiar with the more in-depth aspects of it. I'm aware of the story beats that are used in this game but beyond that, the only things I was familiar with were any points where Canadians were involved in conflict with the Americans. I can't even remember if that happens more than once? It's been quite awhile since I played through this. This was the one AssCreed I didn't have any desire to complete though because I was so incredibly sick of Conner by the end of the game that I just wanted to move on to Liberation (which I still haven't beat yet... but one day I will). I loved the concept that you're playing as a Native American essentially shadow puppeting your way through to assist in the birth of the nation, sort of as an allegory that Native Americans and other minorities were crucial to the development of the nation, while the history books would like you to think it was all just white people making the moves. It was a game that I had a lot of interest in for various reasons, but I just never started clicking with it. To be fair though, it was heavily overshadowed by me having just 100% completed the entire Ezio trilogy right before I started playing it. My love for Ezio made Conner that much more annoying unfortunately.

@@Lag22987 I was not an Assassin's Creed game as it fails virtually all the criteria written by the original creators of the series in the "10 Commandments of AC". It only bears the name and that is all. This is what I cared mostly about. However to answer your question, it may have been a solid game, but what it depicted was certainly not Classical Greece of the 5th century BC, but more of a fantastical mythohistorical westernized pop-culture RPG version of Greece, which many many flaws concerning it's history, it's culture and civilization, it's language, it's clothing styles and it's warfare combat. And of course the place did not look that much like Greece, and they made it too small if they wanted to include the whole country on one singular map, which was a bad idea. @@MisterK9739 I stand by what I said. Sure Edward's story was good. But when you focus on the assassins, it just became generic "you are a bad person" then becoming a better person. Also the out of animus sections were garabage. There was no character in those sections I liked, or cared about. The writing for those sections are either cringy or boring Couldn't say much about Origins story. Only played 8 hours of it and returned it. But from my experience, the main mission's story is good. But the structure ruins it for me. Having to do so many boring side missions just to do the next main mission. There are some good missions like exploring the pyramids, but there are way more boring ones like following a person while they talk to you, or listen to a person talk then fight enemies at the end of the mission. Again, I think I would probably like the story of Origins. But I hate how the structure pushes you to fast forward the process buy the microtranctions. But this is from 8 hours of game play so take it with a grain of salt. I just know that when I bought, I thought to myself "As soon as I feel like buying the microtransactions to fast forward the process, I'm gonna return it"
@MisterK9739
@MisterK9739 4 жыл бұрын
Kevin Vo Well, your arguments make zero sense because the same structure has been there for every AC but ok. Follow people, fight people, defend people, kill people. That's literally in every single game. Also, the game never forces you to buy anything. If you want to rush through the main story and ignore 50% of the game, you shouldn't be surprised that this was not intended
@teneesh3376
@teneesh3376 4 жыл бұрын
@@MisterK9739 it does because the main missions are levels apart. Having one mission be lv5, then the one aftee be lv 10. Yes you don't have to buy the microtransactions. But with how long it takes to level up, it really does heavily encourage you to try and buy them. Also the arguement of "that's been in every game" still doesn't excuse it for being bad. The main missions have a little lee way because the story is more interesting. I say a little because it is still boring to do. But constantly doing it in side missions with no good story to back it up really does drag on. It emphasizes how tediois and samey the side missions are Plus the main missions structure is more follow a guy, then climb around the environment to go to the objective, then maybe fight a guy Honestly if Ubisoft wants to make a better game, they would try to make a smaller world with less side missions. I know that sounds worse, but that means they are able to focus on the smaller details. Great side missions that feel different and are interesting. Environments that can be easily memorized and don't require you to look at the map constantly. But requires you to know the layout and expects you to navigate through it on your own. If they would make a smaller game, then they wouldn't have to copy and paste so many side missions. Or put in trailing missions Well that and a climbing system that isn't just uncharted but you can't jump. God I hope the new movement system is more like mirror's edge but with a grasp mechanic
