Bartholomew Roberts is the evil counterpart to Edward Kenway in general: Both are Welsh people who became captains by chance and by accident, wore the outfits of dead men(Howell Davis and Duncan Walpole respectively) and are pursued by the Assassins(Edward for having the Eagle vision and Roberts for being a Sage) and Templars. Hell, even their first outfits resemble each other. But Edward, for all his faults, genuinely cares about his friends and family, Roberts is a cruel, ruthless and selfish man who will stomp, degrade and betray anyone to get what he wants. Edward wants a merry life but a long one, Roberts wants a merry life but a short one. Edward values freedom, Roberts wants subjugation. Roberts is what Edward could have become if he lacked a moral compass.

Edward didnt get effected by the sleeping dart because he spends 95% of his time perpetually drunk so the sleep dart is nothign to him

This guy confused me so much. He was so low key until all of a sudden he’s bombastic and charismatic.

His voice is actually oddly satisfying to listen to. They really chose great voice actors. Loved the “You haven’t the mettle for my brand of madness”. Beautiful.

Roberts is my favorite Assassin's Creed villain. Criminally underrated considering how he's based on a real person as well, who was just as badass as his video game incarnation.

At 23:56 Roberts said he wanted his body destroyed while in actual history, one of his crewmates destroyed his body so that the captain that defeated him couldn't claim him as a trophy.

Already enjoyed playing this but looking back at this, I never noticed how much the dialogue sounds like poetry. I could listen to them talk all day.

An old song about Roberts has the lyric "never touched a bottle", yes, never touched a bottle of the rough stuff (rum) but that is not to say he didn't imbibe alcohol at all. I heard he actually preferred fine European wines and liquors to rum since he couldn't stand the fiery burn of the beverage and the high alcohol content made him ill.

"A merry life and a short one" Roberts sure backed up his words there having absolutely no regrets at all. That is the way everyone should live.

In general this game was just a lot of fun. I always remember enjoying the sequences we had with the charming Black Bart Roberts here. Everything about him was on point from the immaculate drip to the superb voice acting. He had such a commanding presence every time. A memorable side character and antagonist. Man the dialogue for this series was pure poetry. Some of us took it for granted in many respects.

23:28 - 23:42 You may never notice this, but in that statement alone, Bartholomew Roberts, being a Sage of Aita, is indirectly responsible for the death of Edward Kenway decades later. The reason for this is because when Roberts vaguely referenced the Grand Temple, Edward proceeded to research many temples that the Isu once operated while writing everything in his journal, including writing about the vault Ezio Auditore had unlocked back at Rome centuries ago. Edward had contacted Reginald Birch as a employee and a suitor for his daughter Jennifer Scott, though Edward never realized until too late that Birch was actually a Grand Master Templar who sought to find the Grand Temple to complete the Templar cause: to abolish free will of humanity. Once Edward refused to hand over the journal to Birch despite his threats, Birch ordered mercenaries to ransack the Kenway mansion, causing the death of Edward and the abduction of the research journal as well as the kidnapping and trafficking of Jennifer. Birch immediately adopted Edward's second child Haytham Kenway and proceeded to brainwash and convert him into a devoted killer with a philosophical code. The Grand Temple was founded by Haytham with the help of his partner and love interest Ziio, though it could not be opened without the Apple of Eden. The door of the Temple would remain closed shut until the arrival of Desmond Miles centuries later. Due to being a heavy adversary of Edward, Roberts was a ticking time bomb against him. Roberts indirectly had Edward to get started on the research for the Grand Temple he never succeeded in or completed in his lifetime, and that research alone is ultimately proved to be a catalyst for the downfall of the Kenway family, as the journal made Edward a target for Birch and the British Templars. The journal reminded in the Templars' hands for over a century after Edward's death, until it was stolen by the Assassin Evie Frye. Edward may had outlived Bartholomew Roberts by a few years, though he could not live in a merry life and a long one, on the contrast of Roberts' motto "a merry life and a short one."

Last great assassin‘s creed villain. From the unexpectedly relatable goals of Robert De Sable and his cabal to delightfully cruel borgia family to the sympathetic Haytham Kenway. Maybe Caesar was interesting but really Not Counting modern characters like Otso Berg or Daniel Cross, Roberts is the last interesting historical villain of the franchise. Unity, Syndicate, origins,odyssey,Valhalla all had bland and forgettable villains.
