Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a big game, and now I've finally finished editing it into a movie. Two movies actually. This is part 1. Join the Viking Eivor "Wolf-Kissed" Varinsdottir as she journeys to England, uncovering an ancient secret critical to saving the world!
This is by far the longest Assassin's Creed story, and this meant this project would be massive in scope. It took 5 months to work on these movies. The story alone was 72 hours of gameplay, even though I went through it as quickly as I could, doing only the bare minimum level grinding. Because it was so big, I had to cut a LOT of what the game requires you to do. 62 quests were cut, out of 154 required story quests, as well as plenty of other grinding, raids, and assassination targets. Some of the cut quests were interesting stories on their own, but simply did not have a specific purpose to the overall story.
On the other hand, there are still some quests that I was originally considering cutting to focus a little more closely on the main Eivor/Sigurd storyline, and that would of course have shortened the run time, however, those quests are essentially the main Assassin/Templar focus in this game, and it would be a shame to lose that. In the end, they also proved to improve overall story structure and pacing, so despite the added length, I think it made sense to keep them. There's still plenty cut out. I estimate that approximately 70% of my total play time in this game ended up either being necessary grinding or story arcs I ended up cutting from the movie.
Those familiar with my previous movies will know that I try my best to remove as many on screen HUD elements as I can, to improve the movie watching experience. The same was true with this movie, and the main focus of my efforts was to remove map indicators in the eagle shots, which I used for establishing shots. During gameplay, there are select areas where I was able to remove things, but in most cases, the main mission objective marker, and some other objective markers needed to remain on screen. This is usually because it's either on screen too long to realistically remove, or is simply displayed in a way where removal is impossible. Overall, while some of those longer scenes may have been theoretically doable, it probably would have at least doubled post production time, so I had to pick and choose what made sense to do. That being said, the game still has plenty of HUD options I was able to remove. Options were better in some other games though. Overall, I ended up creating 137 VFX shots, covering over 23,000 frames total.

*SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* I know it's a choice to play either male or female in this game, but given the revelation that Eivor was really a male reincarnated into a female's body, it's nice to finally see a coherent playthrough/movie version of this game with what I feel is the correct version of the protagonist. Thank you for that, and thank you for what you do.

Yeah I could have even cut it into episodes, but the problem would be the epilogue, as you don't have an episode that finishes the story, and then have another episode after that. So it worked better as two movies, where the epilogue could be placed over the credits.

No, since I already have a movie for the original game in 4K and HDR, I don't really think it's worth my time to remake it simply because of some visual changes. It's still the same story, and it still looks great as it is (and I prefer the old face personally) The ones I plan to remake don't look all that great to watch today, primarily because they're low resolution.

Your movie never cease to amaze me. But I have to ask: why is this video so dim in brightness? I could barely see anything.
@AndyGilleand
@AndyGilleand 3 жыл бұрын
It looks pretty bright to me. Some scenes are dim because of when or where they take place, but most are pretty bright. If you're watching on an HDR capable device, then know that HDR is intended to be viewed in a dark environment. I've mastered the HDR to have the same brightness as the SDR would on a 100 nit monitor, but many people crank the brightness of SDR screens up to compensate for bright lights in their room, whereas HDR screens have a fixed brightness. So that's why HDR is designed to be viewed in either very dim or no lighting, like a theater. With HDR though, you'll have extremely bright highlights in this movie in many scenes, as I've mastered the HDR to extend to 10,000 nits. The second movie is designed to be slightly dimmer due to the story shift, but not by too much. However, right now I'm having issues getting the processing to display my SDR grade correctly, and HDR isn't working at all. The automatic SDR that youtube generated was much dimmer than the color grading I created, and I've been in contact with youtube to fix it. Hopefully youtube is able to solve this before the movie comes out on sunday.
@AndyGilleand
@AndyGilleand 3 жыл бұрын
I just checked watching the HDR on my TV with the lights on, and it was still very clear to me. One thing I might recommend checking is your display's black level calibration. I color grade my movies on an OLED, so I'm trying to get as perfect of black levels as possible, and deep shadows as well, when it makes sense. However, if your black level is set incorrectly, you can potentially clip some of that shadow detail into black, and it might be hard to see in darker scenes. There are some videos on youtube that help with calibrating black level correctly. Most TVs have this listed as "brightness" but some list it as black level instead, so you may need to look up your TV's settings if you're unsure. Also, if you are viewing on a TV and have a device set to Full Range RGB, this may be the wrong setting. Limited Range RGB is usually the correct setting for most TVs unless you specifically calibrate them around full range, which could also make other devices on the same TV look bad. Full Range is usually only good for PC monitors.

@AndyGilleand
@AndyGilleand 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think some of those side stories are actually pretty good on their own, even if they have low relevance to the core of the story, so it was definitely difficult to cut them. @AndyGilleand
@AndyGilleand 3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I didn't know that. Those scenes still used mocap data though, they just reused animations that were created with existing mocap data. So it's sort of a cross between hand animated and mocapped in that sense. Not as good as full mocap, but not too bad either. Overall there aren't a huge amount of fully mocapped scenes in the entire game from what I understand. But there's still some in both movies. Also, my movie doesn't include all the arcs.

@@DavidRodriguezJr From what I've heard, I don't think any of the DLCs in Valhalla affect the main story much at all. They're pretty standalone and not particularly important to know. Or at least that's the impression I get. But I still plan to play them. I currently have about 19 games ahead of those DLCs on my list (some long, some short), so it will probably still be a while. But if I am impressed enough by them, I can certainly be convinced to do them. It just won't be any time soon if so. Even the "final chapter" update was almost nothing story wise with no gameplay at all, and only one cutscene being kind of interesting. The only Valhalla DLC I do currently plan to include however is the crossover between Odyssey and Valhalla they did, which I plan to do at the same time I do the final Odyssey DLC movie (Legacy of the First Blade). I do have a problem with how grindy and long the games are getting, which also made this project take longer, but I feel like Ubisoft focuses on more content at the sacrifice of the quality of the content. Editing the story down considerably as I've done here, including cutting several arcs, definitely improves the pacing and focus of the story, and I found new appreciation in many aspects of it when rewatching it this way. That being said, many of the scenes I did cut are quite good, and you miss out on a huge portion of the game's overall content and experience by watching my movies. While that does improve many aspects of the experience for many, there's still a lot lost when experiencing the game this way, so I still recommend buying the game for those who enjoy my movies. Just be aware of the length of the game, likely requiring over 100 hours from you if you wish to experience everything.

Hoped you select the male protagonist, but well - your decission in the end :-) (i prefer male protagonists when i play games, can identify more with them. And yes im one of those few that enjoyed alexios in odissey ;-) and yes i got hate for enjoying playing him, and no i dont know why people hate other people for choosing how they play, thats a mistery still to this day to me.... ) I admire the dev's at ubisoft for putting in that much work to create two protagonists so each player can enjoy the game the way he wants to.
@AndyGilleand
@AndyGilleand 2 жыл бұрын
In both games, the female protagonist is the canon choice, and the version the story was written around and the game was designed around, so I went with that as it will always be most consistent with the lore. For example, Valhalla refers to the staff as something Kassandra handed to Layla. That being said, I think the actress for Kassandra was much better than the one for Alexios. With Valhalla, both actors have good qualities that benefit different parts of Eivor's personality, but at least both actors get used here (you'll see what I mean later on if you haven't gotten very far)
@fhr0435
@fhr0435 2 жыл бұрын
Andy's got his own reasons for choosing which version he uses, but I'm personally grateful to him for his choice for both Valhalla and Odyssey; 90% of the gameplay walkthrough for those AC games that I saw used the male protagonist, so it's a blessing to finally find a good player willing to use the female version. Whenever there's 2 choices for protagonist (male+female), I will always find everyone in the walkthrough comments arguing about why the male is more plausible than the female. I've always found it excessively easier to find gameplay channels that prefer the guy/male protagonist regardless of the game, so everything you've said here was quite new to me 😂

I dislike the female leads. All of them. And I say this as a woman. I dislike how in order to be a female protagonist that they have to absorb masculine traits. So what I see is what looks and acts like a man, with a woman’s voice. It doesn’t match. Seems really off to me. I don’t know if it’s because the culture is now heading towards a non binary, gender less type thing or if I just have a more traditional sense of masculine and feminine roles. I don’t like the blurring of lines. Not for video game characters. Maybe if they designed them to be truly androgynous so that it’s not painfully clear I’m playing an ugly woman. IDK.

I'm not sure about you, but I think it reasonable that the "femininity" of women in older, harsher times would vary from the "femininity" of ladies in later societies that had different standards of behavior laid out for people. The world still has societies in history with gender+behavioral standards different from what "traditional" roles have been set out in the more commonly known cultures.
