I would rate this model of Bernina as one of my all time favourite Bernina machines. I really like the feel of them and the way they stop on a dime. They are superbly built at the height of Bernina quality.
I have three of these lovely Bernina 930 sewing machines and I'm going through assessing the machines so I can sell one or two of them. I'll be keeping one for myself.

Just a couple days ago I found a model 930 with a broken control pedal. Looks like it was stomped on. The plastic brackets for the pedal rocking motion were broken and the carbon brushes were broken and too short to make connection. Never heard of this name until I saw it at a yard sale. Checked prices for a pedal and almost passed out. So, with nothing to lose, I rebuilt the plastic brackets and made new brushes for the speed control. What a beautiful smooth sewing machine. Great $5.00 investment.

Described to me by a sewing machine technician as the machine where they got everything right.

Thank you so much for a very generous video, you taught me so much. My record 930 is very precious to me and I hope it never breaks down, it is too heavy or me to lift to a service engineer. I clean it, I oil it, I use it and keep in my living room. I bought it fully serviced with capacitors etc replaced. I have subscribed and liked and will be searching for more helpful videos. You have a very nice and informative teaching style

I have one. Love it . Would buy another if I could find one in good condition and reasonably priced.

On my machine, when using the basting stitches, the thread comes out of the upper hook and then everything turns to custard. The basting stitches work great when the thread stays in, and is fantastic for using as gathering threads.

I’d love a 930 just because I love the beige colour scheme… (and bec Bernina’s are schmexy!) … but I’m still happy and in love with my (7yo to me!) 1010! Plus she cost me a pretty penny, as much as my industrial 😂😂😂 And that’s not counting the feet I’ve managed to collect for her over the years now. Her carbon brushes are good … and with the help of yours and other videos I know how to keep her in fairly good knick for many more years to come, I hope! The only thing I need for her is a bridge pin for the extension table (I finally managed to get one, a friend’s dad had a spare one and she gave it to me free but with the broken pin… but I was so happy regardless)… I managed to knock up a screw for the missing pin which works….. but hopefully one day someone on this side of the pond will reprint a run of the bridge pin thingey… or I’ll get my own printer 😂

Can you do a video on the heel touch up down needle feature foot controller. Mine is acting silly. You have given me the courage to open up my machine and check the capacitors. I’m the original owner. I’m not a big sewer anymore. I sew in spurts. Love my 930. I have cared for it well and looks like new.

Thank you for a very interesting video. I think the number 1 machine made more noise. I made everything we wore for 40 plus years with my Elna su and never even thought of a basting stitch. All about years of practice and the odd pin is fine. When it comes to electronics I burt myself with a modern Bernina. Still have to answer the email, sorry but my world has turned upside down Glad to see your hand looking better Take care

You could buy a basting needle plate for the Elna SU, Ive had one for my star SU and my air electronic SU, beautiful machines.

Carolyn thank you so much These machines are the best. So glad there are like minded people who love these machines. Problem is where I live in the UK can't find people to sevice them. I'm South African, living in the UK and had to leave my machine in SA. Bought an old one here and really needs a service because it has not been used. Enjoy your machines and thank you for the info. Never knew of this but didn't need them.

The only weakness seems to be the basting stitch seizing if not used regularly. The semi-industrial versions - 940 and 950 - are even better with a faster rotary (cf. oscillating) hook and a more powerful external motor in an industrial set-up are even better. But no free arm, and the Bernina free arms really are free arms, nice and thin.

The faster rotary hook and more powerful motor of the 940 and 950 doesn't make them better for any user. They may well be a disadvantage for domestic users. In most cases the basting stitch mechanism will just be seized, so it usually can be fixed. In my opinion, the real achilles heel of those machines are the print plates that contain the chips for the reverse stretch stitches and the kick-back function of the pedal in the 930 electronic. Whenever those fail, it'll be a bigger challange to get the machine up and running again.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. What are those two resistors that are soldered from behind the board at 41:50? It seems to be non-OEM mods ..

Wow!! The basting stitch problem is exactly what is going on with my Bernina 930. What do you recommend for lubricating oil before the sewing machine oil?? Can I use WD40?

You mention the long upper belt is getting difficult to find. These are available here in the UK, from Simply Bearings - 182XL031 91 teeth. I've got three of these machines but the X1 Rifa capacitors on mine are 0.68 microfarad. Each one had the capacitors blown.

Thank you for showing this assessment! My Bernina Record 930 stopped working last week - I made a short pause in sewing and suddenly I heard some kind of a klicking noise next to me, and there was a lot of smoke and it stank horribly... Could this be a ruined capacitor, like in Machine 3, or something more serious? Just trying to evaluate how difficult (and expensive) the repair is going to be... Thank you!

Hi. Sounds like it could be a blown capacitor. Thanks.

Maybe some enterprising fellow could print some of the plastic spare parts to keep these machines running for a bit longer. Just musing.

Hello, is Bernina 931 also coming with needle up position?

I’m having a serious problem with the hand crank and the needle position bar and I have backstage passes from my 80s touring with rock bands all over my machine and I hesitate bringing it in to service since my guy retired two years ago. Any tips on helping me get my Bernina 930 record back on top it, I pushed it I have to confess I was doing some shears and I could hear it grinding and I just kept sewing because I had to go to a clients and deliver and it grind it right down to a stop and good thing I had another machine although it was my consew and it was heavy duty but I managed to make it work but now I’m sitting here trying to fix my machine I’ll send you a picture…

My bobbin spinner is working so my belts are OK all my dials work the lights work …the only thing is it froze up and I did hear a grinding, so I’m sure I just pushed it to the limit and I have the bottom plate off. I have the bobbin case out completely. I took the side left off with a light is to look into the needle bar area where the spring is a course at the top off but not the side with the hand crank or the back… so I am just trying to clean it with alcohol and trying to shimmy it so I can at least get some movement I had it earlier and then I plugged it in and tried to use it to see if it I got it and it froze up again 😢

Thank you. I inherited my mother machine. I wasn't allowed to use it until she decided she couldn't see well enough to thread the needle. She never taught me to use it because it was so expensive and she was constantly sewing something. I remember her going to classes to learn how to use it for months. I am grateful for your helpful information. I will check out more of your videos. Your instructions are very good. I found lots of lint and gently brushed them away and used lubricant where needed.
