Trick 1...e5 players with the DEUTZ GAMBIT

In this video we start to cover one of the major responses that Black has against 1.e4, and that is the symmetrical 1...e5. This leads to what are sometimes called 'Open Game' positions, and is one of the most reliable and hardest to crack weapons at Black's disposal. In this video I recommend a very sharp and interesting opening weapon known as the Deutz Gambit which contains within a very poisonous trap that has tricked thousands of Black players over the years.

Great video, thank you. 28 minutes may be a little long for a youtube vid (don't try it on tiktok!) but I would MUCH rather it run a little long than skip over something important. For what you covered I'd say this one is spot on time-wise. I've changed to a d4 player but still enjoyed this video. Thanks again and keep up the good work!

Thank you! I watched the whole 3 part series just before my game earlier today against an 1800 (I'm 1400 FIDE) I knew plays 1...e5. He responded with Ne6 after Bg5 and I was unfortunately out of book haha, but combining f4 and Kh1 ideas you mentioned I managed to get a draw :)

I don't think they are too long, they are really comprehensive dont think you can cut down on to much or it will loose the quality of them. Possible solutions make them into part 1, part 2, part 3. That would be an alternative if you think you need to go that way !

Isn´t this also called Koltanowski-gambit? The positions arising look similar.

You are correct. I have never heard it called the Deutz gambit. Credit should be given to George Koltanowski who helped make it playable with his many contributions to it.

I see 2 ... d6 about half the time- any suggestions for that? Just have to follow the "normal" Giuoco Piano with d3 or c3?

Actually, I have a very nice line against the Philidor Defense, I'll make a video showing it and add it to the win with 1.e4 series. Should be either the next video I publish, or the one after that.

@@alexastaneh I made a mistake I meant 4 O-O d6. Philidor would be great too. 4 ... d6 is about as common as Nf6 around 2000 lichess.

@@polarbearcj Ah yes, yeah this line to be honest kills off the possibility of the Deutz :( It's actually a very annoying 'spoiler' of sorts because it's not simple to provide a good plan against it. Just one quick tip, I notice that Black players often go 4...d6 5.c3 Bg4. Against this we can get an advantage playing somewhat risky-looking chess. Can we play these lines in classical games?

These lines have been played as White even at the GM level, so for sure you can. If both sides play perfectly against the Deutz it should be around equal. In general I'm not a fan of building a repertoire around lines that are objectively bad as I don't like the idea that if my opponent is well prepared I'm going to be at a disadvantage from the get go.
