I see this film as proof that Wes Anderson actually likes modern franchise blockbusters on a conceptual level and is paying tribute to them. The greatest minds behind franchise films like Lucas, Spielberg and Cameron, and the basis of the material of modern franchise films (Marvel) are products of the age of nuclear anxiety (think of all the radiation based origin stories) and the vibrant sci-fi and theatre scene of that era.

The lower reviews of this film were from casuals who never saw a Wes Anderson film. They saw Scarlette Johansson's name and saw the suggestive nude scene from the trailer, but were too dense to understand is style or the film. I laughed so many times and thoroughly enjoyed the film.

The scene was odd. The alien appears animated like he is in a cartoon. The space between the audience and the stage changed from small to large and back to small. The cage holding the meteorite has no bottom. Also, the photo is taken in natural light, and later in the movie the photo is shown to have have been taken with a strong flash.

How can you not look at that scene and see he has become a total cliché. Rehashing the same old dialogue tropes and styles. It's so boring to see a director limit himself to his own self imposed banality. It was quirky and artsy the first few times he did it, now he's just spewing out any old overly produced, synthetic euro cinema, crap. A good director continues to push himself to new realms and realities like Spielberg, Nolan, Kubrick. The fact is - Wes Anderson had potential to be one of the greats and I won't deny he's made some absolutely fantastic films but I'm not going to sit here and say that his last few movies have been anything other than superficial drivel, tainted by his own 'style' and celebrity. No longer does he care for story than about shoving the hottest A List actors in to his next 'Set Design & Stiff Dialogue The Movie: 2"
