Asteroids are everywhere in our solar system, but mostly concentrated in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. But many asteroids are potentially hazardous to life on Earth. We'll take a look at how asteroids are classified into Groups, Types, and Families, and explore some of the asteroids visited by spacecraft, including Ceres, Vesta, Ida & Dactyl, Eros, and Itokawa. We also explore how we might defend ourselves against a major asteroid impact.

Super video as always! you're the first guy i see on youtube that mentions the orbital gaps caused by Jupiter unstable resonances! Can't wait to see more of your content!

Thanks, Babar! I always thought the Kirkwood gaps were a neat feature of the asteroid belt and wanted to discuss them here in light of my video on planetary rings. I created these videos for my students but am trying to grow the channel for a general audience so feel free to subscribe!

Christian Ready Christian Ready yeah that's great! Hehe i already am since several month ;) i see you linked Scott Manley's channel at the end of the vidéo, did he helped you writing your épisode?

Scott didn't help me write it (I winged it without a script; I really need to stop doing that!), but he graciously allowed me to use a screen capture from one of his asteroid videos.

Our willingness to do something about it followed by "hey, you never know", made me laugh hard. I pictured a bunch of old guys 100 years from now in a global conference looking at shows on netflix on their phones and going like, hmm, meh.
