Step back in time and experience the allure of the 1979 Aston Martin V8 'Oscar India'. As Aston Martin sought to replace the renowned DB6 model in the late '60s, they embarked on creating a larger, more modern car. Initially equipped with the straight-six Vantage engine from the DB6, the DBS was released in 1967. However, it wasn't until two years later that Tadek Marek's visionary V8 engine was ready, giving birth to the legendary DBS V8. With the discontinuation of the straight-six Vantage in 1973, the redesigned and rechristened Aston Martin V8 became the brand's flagship vehicle for nearly two decades.
In 1978, Aston Martin introduced a refined version of the V8, codenamed 'Oscar India'. Unveiled at the prestigious Birmingham International Motor Show in October (Oscar India = October Introduction), this vehicle boasted increased refinement, luxury, and, notably, automatic transmission as the transmission of choice for this grand tourer.
The 'Oscar India' V8 featured a beautifully sculptured power bulge, thanks to the closure of the bonnet scoop. One of the significant external modifications was the integration of a sleek integral spoiler, expertly crafted under the guidance of William Towns, the original designer of the car.
Beneath the exquisite exterior resides the heart of this automotive legend-a meticulously crafted 5.3- litre V8 engine. Equipped with four twin-choke Weber carburettors and boasting an all-alloy, quad-cam design, this powerhouse generates an exhilarating 345 horsepower, delivering an unforgettable driving experience and exhaust note.
Step inside the meticulously revised interior of the 'Oscar India' model, inspired by the recently introduced Volante. The return of burr walnut dash and door cappings, last seen in the DB2/4, adds a touch of classic elegance. The transformation also included a shift from cloth to leather headlining, with the interior requiring a staggering nine hides for completion.
During its seven and a half years of production, a mere 291 of these exceptional vehicles were created, an astonishingly small number compared to today's production figures.
Now, presented before you is a tastefully specified matching numbers 1979 Aston Martin V8 'Oscar India' coupe, adorned in its distinctive Salisbury Blue exterior, complemented by Fawn hide interior and elegant Burr Walnut fittings. Equipped with an automatic gearbox and fitted from new with air conditioning. The car also benefits from an all-important upgraded sports exhaust system.
In 1990, Mr David Bangham acquired this exceptional vehicle as part of his growing car collection. Among the collection's exotic cars were three cherished Aston Martins, for which he had a purpose-built garage constructed to ensure careful storage of his collection. Throughout his 32-year ownership, he used the car sparingly.
Deciding he wanted to restore his beloved vehicle, he entrusted none other than Aston Martin Works to complete a full restoration. The restoration was completed in 1999 resulting in meticulous mechanical, chassis, and body restoration, along with a stunning bare-metal repaint at a cost of £88,000 (invoices documented in the history file). In today's currency, this would amount to nearly £200,000. It's worth highlighting that the value of these cars in the mid to late 90s was lower than the cost of restoration, underscoring Mr Bangham's unwavering commitment to maintaining the car regardless of expense.
Supporting documentation, including invoices and images, attests to the extent of these works and is included in the accompanying Aston Martin Works leather-bound history file that was presented to Mr Bangham upon completion of the works. Over the subsequent 22 years, the car remained cherished and carefully stored, accumulating a mere 338 additional miles since its restoration was completed in 1999.
In 2022, Mr Bangham engaged the expertise of renowned Aston Martin Specialists, Aston Engineering from Derby, for the car's re-commissioning (invoices documented in the history file). He then finally parted with the car early in 2022 when our vendor, an enthusiastic Aston Martin collector, procured the vehicle through Aston Engineering. This acquisition served as an interim solution while his other Aston V8 underwent restoration by the same Aston Martin Specialists.
Included with this excellent example of the late and last series of the AM V8 are its original owner's handbook, tool roll, vehicle jack, and spare keys.
It is rare to find a vehicle of this calibre, boasting extensive restorative works and impeccable condition, all at such an attractive price point. This meticulously specified AMV8 is sure to command admiration and provide endless enjoyment, knowing that a comprehensive restoration has been carried out. This extraordinary motor car is in excellent condition and eagerly awaits its next fortunate owner.
