Unless we were going to handcuff him to the bench, he wanted to leave. Sometimes it's in the hands of the player. The Athletic reported that Emery wanted to keep him, but he wished to leave to pursue game time. And considering how the season turned out for him, it was a successful decision for his career. Also, it served a purpose. We had an extra 5m profit on the last PSR cycle, he's developed more than he would have here and we effectively are only paying a dirt cheap 7.5m for him after you remove 30% and the 5m profit from the 18m fee.

Definitely a finance move, we have a 30% sell on clause so if we bid £18m we get that 30% off the fee so we only pay £12.6m I would be surprised if he got loaned out in the prem then sold for a huge fee next summer

The bid is £16m isn't it? In any case it wouldn't be more than £3.5m per season and the £5m straight in that We got may have been needed. Mistakes always cost. Getting an equivalent player from elsewhere could cost much more.

Correct, because it's effectively the same for Ipswich if we pay 30% less or they pay us 30% of the identical fee from another club. Keep in mind they already paid us 5m, so it's 18m less 30% = 12.5m less 5m profit = 7.5m net fee

Tell yourself he's never been at Villa before and signing a player like that from the Championship for what now equates to £11m and it seems pretty good. We sold in a rush probably not seeing his ability or potential and pay for that mistake. As a single transfer though, £16m represents good value compared to what We can get elsewhere for that money. He's cheap at £16m no matter his history with us

That would mean we have Illing-Junior, JPB, Rogers, Watkins, Bailey, Ramsey, Diaby, Dobbins, Buendia, Chiesea and Felix to play our attacking positions. Let's say Dobbins goes on loan like expected that still leaves 10 attacking players. Not all of them are going to play. Felix Watkins Chisea and Bailey figure to play majority. Rogers and Diaby play significant time. Ramsey might move into Luiz role but that is just speculation. With Buendia figuring to fight for his spot, will JPB get any time? Hell I remember seeing Illing-Junior wanted guarantees he plays a major role as well. Lots of questions.

@@christianc.2664 Lots of questions but they wouldn't bring him back for nothing. Imo Beundia should be given a go playing deeper. There's nothing missing from his skill set that would prohibit him playing the Dougie role. His distribution is better - even better than Tielemans imo. He runs and runs, can make tackles. And him getting forward from.a deeper position is better than Dougie getting forward from a deeper position. It's just whether he can learn the role. There's no chance We sign Chiesa and Felix. And tbh Philogene looks a better player than Felix anyway, with none of the issues We're all concerned about. The fee would be less than Felix wages anyway. *Note it's being reported that whilst We can match any fee accepted for Philogene, We also get a 30% discount after. Meaning We sold for £5m and buy back for just over £10m having saved the wages for last season too. His time away has essentially cost what it would have to loan him out and pay his wages.

Selling him was a PSR move. Buying him back can only be a PSR move if We know We will sell him for more after (surely then he wouldn't agree to come back) or if Hull buy a player from us at a fair price (for them) after. I have said, I would be looking to "swap" Archer for him if Emery doesn't plan on keeping him. Perhaps that happens - maybe even a Dendonker or Chambers?

@@UTVFANCHANNEL I've just read that. Now the £5m sale makes sense. We retained quote a bit of power. It also makes sense why We seemed disinterested whilst they negotiated with other clubs until bids were accepted. Otherwise they would wait for a higher price
