FUN FACT: Christopher Lee suggested playing the role as Francisco Scaramanga as a Alternate universe James Bond, where he believes himself suave, lady's man who is cool under pressure, highly intelligent and resourceful, a marksmen and gentlemen. This is why he comes off obsessed with Bond and acts very similar to him.

Then apparently we have him to thank for the best parts of the movie. Seriously if they had chucked all the sci-fi laser nonsense at the end and kept it focused on Bond vs. Twisted Reflection of Bond this movie would be so much better.

Honestly, I think Scaramanga is looking to retire. He's worked himself up to the height of his profession and even if a job would be a challenge, the outcome is always the same. What he really wants just came to his island, as he knew he would and he can't see any outcome except that Bond will die. This is the actions of a man going out on top with one "big score" to set him up for life.
@Chasmodius

And it really only needed one or two lines from Scaramanga at ANY point while he was expositioning all over the island and his dinner.

@@Chasmodius I remember commenting on Calvin Dyson's look at this movie that it'd have made sense if he was using the laser to go from assassin to terrorist for hire. Like, he has a laser gun and is working on a more powerful one that he could use to, like, charge exorbitant fees for clients to shoot strategic targets. This way, Bond really comes across as Scaramanga's retirement present to himself, or I suppose in this context, his graduation present to himself. He's taken down the closest thing to himself; there's no other achievements for him to really take behind a handgun and he can move on to bigger and better things that basically let him work from home.
@toadysp
@toadysp 3 жыл бұрын
@@Chasmodius During Scaramanga's walk around the island he mentions that he was considering auctioning the Solex to the highest bidder. Bond comments that oil companies would pay top dollar for it just to keep it off the market, and I believe Scaramanga's exact words were "I considered that." It's not a full explanation, but I actually really like that Scaramanga doesn't *give* bond all the answers. Because at the end of the day, to me, it's not the Solex that makes Scaramanga a compelling villain, it's his lifestyle as an assassin, making him a fantastic foil for Bond. My favorite bond villains are always like that: Scaramanga, Alec Trevelyan, and Red Grant. Whenever Bond converses with one of these guys it always feels personal: like he has to defeat them in order to prove that he's not like them.

In regards to why Scaramanga isn't just chilling in his hideout quietly, I think the movie is just implying that he's bored with it all. That's why he has these elaborate set ups to kill Bond and others. He's so good assassinating people that he's become bored with it and has to do outrages things to find it all interesting.

Goldeneye weapon sets were pretty much all polarized though. There isn't really much difference between GG and Grenade Launchers or Rockets, either way the strongest weapon spawns in the same place and the match is ultimately a fight to restrict access to that weapon. Then there's proximity mines, which truly inhabit their own special circle of hell as being far and away the most frustrating way to experience Goldeneye multiplayer. Also the control scheme was fine for it's era, speed strafing was a really cool way to optimize movement which allowed players to flex their skills.

I saw this at the theatre in '74 and felt that this movie really needed Ken Adams to make Scaramanga's Fun House work properly. Though good, Peter Murton wasn't up to Adams' avant-garde genius. Let's be clear, this was more of a Cubby production than a Saltzman one. Harry Salzman had helmed the previous movie LALD, while Cubby helmed TMWTGG and it shows. Saltzman didn't even get his own choice for the title song performer... Elton John, that's how little influence he had on this movie.

"Prompt critical" can occur in a nuclear (fission) reactor when the rate of fission grows exponentially over the course of milliseconds and it will explode. (A physical explosion, not a nuclear one.) This happened at the SL-1 plant in the early 1960s. There's clearly no fission processes in the liquid helium plant so I found that very amusing.

Maude Adams does not appear in 3 Bond films. She was indeed a visitor on the set of A View to A Kill and supposedly was in the background somewhere during the scene where Bond is at Fisherman's Wharf. However, it's likely that the shot or shots she appears in never made it into the final cut of the film. Scrutinized viewings by Bond fans have pretty much debunked that. This is similar to the myth that Ian Fleming appears in From Russia With Love standing with a cane on a field in one shot as the train Bond is on passes by. However, this is actually just a local farmer or shepherd.

I can see James Bond knowing about Scaramanga (at least the name) as they do work in the same profession (it seems much more plausible than him being able to spout random facts about Faberge eggs, for example). Like MI6 has been shown to do, it's a good idea to keep track of those you might come up against in future. I don't know, but I expect the Minister with M at the start would be somebody from the Foreign Office (possibly the Foreign Secretary himself) as that was the Department MI6 reported too (at the time, at least, it may be different today).

The official "Everything Or Nothing" documentary spends some time on Saltzman (including interviews with his daughter). Basically, he thought the prospects for the series were over and he'd also made a string of bad investments that led to him pledging his half of Danjaq to various banks. Michael G. Wilson (Cubby's stepson) came back to the family business (for the first time since playing a soldier in Goldfinger) as a lawyer who negotiated the deal that saw United Artists buy out Saltzman's share, which would end up playing a major role in the series' instability over the past thirty or so years as UA and then MGM bounced from questionable ownership group to questionable ownership group.

The general sense I've gotten is that Saltzman was the showman with wild ideas who wanted everything larger than life. Broccoli was more the execution guy who could get a cast and crew to move mountains to make a tight picture. I don't think it's a coincidence that the next 15 years of films after TMWTGG are, with maybe one or two exceptions, solidly executed and not that outlandish.

And Ms. Adams is not particularly good at carrying through on her threats while calling security and holding Bond at gunpoint in her hotel room because remember that she actually sent the gold bullet with 007 on it. She is playing him to some degree. So her actions actually do make sense.

This series is seriously screwing up my KZfaq recommendations. Apparently I've been flagged as a Bond enthusiast and now it's all Bond documentaries and other rematch series. That said, fun watch. I guess this is the last bond film with a "gold" subtheme?

The cowboy mannequin that shoots the revolver is supposedly Roger Moore.

I always thought it was pretty obvious, and just another reason to love this ridiculous movie 😂

Wow Matt (G) taking my job. Well I'll keep doing it for my own sake unless he starts putting in the actor, or the years
