What you see is about 25% of the completed clock movement in terms of parts count, about 2000 of a total of 8000 parts. This project has been in construction for about 1.5 years and has another 2 to go. Much of the most difficult subassemblies are done as the going train contained a large amount of novel mechanical concepts: dual remontoire mediated by differential, dual escape wheels, compound fly fans, compound going barrels. The going train contains nearly 60 wheels. All pivots in the going train are jewelled in chatons. The rest of the pivots will have jewelled pivots for a total of 450 jewelled pivots (exception being the going barrels because of the large weight, these will be in caged roller bearings) . All ferrous parts are stainless steel and all brass will eventually be plated in two tones of gold.
This project was conceived in 2003 and will be completed in 2011 or 2012. We are not trying to make the most complicated clock, there are many in the last 200 years that beat this project by a wide margin, but we hope to make a mark in the area of fascination in terms of movement. Also the quality of fabrication will be next to none. You can follow the project on my web site: www.my-time-machines.net. or email me at: mfrank1@rcn.com. You can see more of this clock at my website: www.my-time-machines.net/my_cu...

@fgtyc Worth every penny for anyone who appreciates not just the artistic beauty of it but in my eyes the true beauty comes in the complex engineering that goes into it. To anyone who isn't versed in the difficulties associated with precise mechanical engineering, take my word for it that this is 100x more complicated and difficult than you think it is already.

If a product like this were mass produced you would not be watching this video, as this kind of thing would be common. Luckily for both you and the maker these are not common, so you, like me, get to enjoy the video and the creator gets the satisfaction of knowing that only he truly understands it (I don't mean that in a purely mechanical sense).

And your point is? Less is not more, less is simply less. This is made for my personal pleasure. And being a gear-head, I like the extreme complication - this is not merely a horological artifact but kinetic art. It's meant to intrigue and entertain and I can afford it, so simply sit back, relax and enjoy it.

This is one of the most beautiful time pieces... Sublime balance with Elegant style and Pizazz.. and Panache.. I simply froth at the mouth - heh with anticipation of the completed model.Marvelous movement. Would love to see a multitude of closeups and frankly. at least own an SL copy. HAAHH Imagine all the prims. It would be worth it. What wonderful work, and so, It's 2012. Not long now ehh? * Checks the website * I've always wanted something like this gently ticking and bonging away.. Namaste..

Complexity is the main part of the entertainment. There is a place for the elegance of simplicity in many applications, but this is not the goal here. This is "Rube Goldberg meets John Harrison'. And if you think this video is complex, you should look at the ones from August 2011. And those only reflect 60% of the final product. To be fair, once the dials are installed, the machine will make a lot more sense to the uninitiated.

In fact the escapement and dual compound pendulums are based on John Harrison's design. I was looking for a system that had the greatest visual impact and Harrison's design fit the bill. In my machine, we double the escape wheels to two counter-rotating wheels, and we have added dual remontoire for greater impact. Anyone who wants to be on the mailing list for future construction releases can email me and I'll add you.

Yes this uses two grasshopper escapements. It's a bit hard to see on this video (check others made later for a clearer picture) but there are two counter-rotating escape wheels superimposed on each other and each uses a separate grasshopper and each is independently driven through dual remontoire within the going train. If you go to my website you will see a full explanation of how this all works.

We've put about 4 years into this and have another 4 to go. Although the video is from rather early on the project in September 2009, at that time we had just a bit over two years. Check my channel or website for later postings.

Hang on just to clarify something... The comment with this video kinda sounds as though it was written for a much older video. therefore is it right, still that this video shows only 25% of what the finished clock will look like? I can't even imagine it.

Yes, these are older videos. Go to my KZfaq site to see the updated videos. I would say what you see here is about 50 to 60%. Here is the 'main frame' of the clock. All of the complications, the astronomical functions, the dials and all of the mechanisms to make them work are not shown, and in fact have yet to be done. But the clock is now within its metal, decorative frame, not a set of plastic, temporary frames.

Thank you, you get it. This is not really a clock, machine, etc. It is a piece of kinetic art. It is made as we go along so there is no manual, or plans as such. Go to my channel, click 'about' to go to the website which will show complete details of this project.

I did the design and he is building my dream. You can learn more about the project and remontoire on my website

Reduce it to 80 parts and might be able to mass produce and market it. I think many of the ancient 'advanced' technologies was overcomplicated like this, unable to be mass produced, usable only by its creator and his long-time apprentices, and hoarded secret by governments and powerful organizations.

Check the more recent videos, they are evn more impressive. I've yet to attach the 22 complications including an orrery, tellurian, 400 year perpetual calendar, etc. Check back with me when it is finished! It should be another year and a half to two years.
