Thanks for watching this episode of Astrophotography 101. If you've ever wondered how to produce captivating astro-self-portraits, light paint foreground elements for a unique flare, or achieve technical perfection by mastering precise focus and cutting through light pollution, this video will explain the necessary products to truly take your astrophotography to the next level. In most genres of photography, the photographer creates the image, not the gear, but astrophotography is one exception. Below are (non-affiliate) links to purchase some of my favorite accessories:
Bahtinov Mask: goo.gl/j7QYmn
Light Pollution Filter: goo.gl/2NqGoP
Wireless Intervalometer: goo.gl/fAfmrA
Good Flashlight: goo.gl/JjiewN
Pixel Stick: goo.gl/TUpqoh
Light Sphere: goo.gl/BV1SMz
Star Tracker: Vixen Polarie: goo.gl/38jzie , iOptron SkyTracker: goo.gl/Dbrg8q , Star Adventurer (another good option): goo.gl/DoK1W3
Let me know what you thought of this latest animation. Currently under production are a number of camera basics videos ("20 Photography Terms Every Beginner Must Know" & "How to Improve Your Image Quality with Expose to the Right (ETTR)") and an advanced star trail tutorial.

I was new to photography a year ago. After watching the basics, I have had the strong foundation. And now, I was able to take photos of the milky way and create star trails. Thanks to you!

I have been planning to get back into astrophotography after a 20 year hiatus. The leap from film to digital is going to be a big one, really appreciate this series. Don't know if barn door trackers are still a thing, but still plan on making a new one. : )

Thank you for your time and effort to create these videos, I love them even though I don't own any kind of camera (yet). Your style kind of reminds me of Kurzgesagt but it is still unique. I hope I will soon be able to take some cool astrophotos myself! Greetings from Germany :)

Kurzgesagt was my inspiration, so I'm humbled that you would compare my animations to theirs. I think I need to learn some new After Effects techniques though and really experiment.

Hi Vincent, Thanks for all your videos. They've been immensely helpful for me beginning in photography. I have a question/request: do you have transcripts of your videos available, and if not, are you able to provide them? Thanks, Jason.

Wow... I knew Bahtinov Mask's existed.. and knew they made that strange star shapes.. but I always wondered "WHY ANYONE WOULD WANT THAT" ... I could have had one for free for my telescope, but didn't see the point.. My bag was full, so would have been a hassle to carry with everything else, so I just said no... Now that I know you can use it for better focusing, I feel like a fool. Thank you for your video..

I saw your one video on youtube, randomly And today i watched all your 16 videos Why I like these? Because these are simplistic (most important), not to long and this animation give better understand then real life explain😂😂. We have only one problem there is not much of these videos and I know you are new here You should make some tip vid about wild and maybe some video tips (film etc.)

Hey if you see please make a video about camera ev system and iso relation .
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 4 жыл бұрын
Sure! I already address some of this in my videos about ISO and photography misconceptions but a dedicated video about how ISO works in-camera is definitely a good idea and one that I will write down.

Great tips! Do you use you’re pixel stick a lot? I got one s while back and barely use it. Which is sad bc it’s so cool! Love all your videos and the quality is awesome!

I borrowed one and while it was super cool, I didn't think I would ever use it. I included it in the video just because of its many capabilities and creative options.

how does a star tracker work if there's something in the foreground?
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 3 жыл бұрын
You'll have to take a separate exposure of the foreground untracked then blend the two in a program like Photoshop so that the final photo is sharp without a blurred foreground from the movement of the tracker.

Can use laser pointer? I think flash light to much popular for astrophotography
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 4 жыл бұрын
I don't understand your question. Do you want to use a laser pointer to polar align the star tracker or in your self-portraits? Are you driving the idea that flashlights are too often used in astrophotography self-portraits? Let me know what you mean and maybe I can provide better advice or opinion. Thanks!

Apalapse it is..pretty portable
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe it is, but portable is a relative term. Regardless, the iOptron Skytracker, Vixen Polarie, and Star Adventurer are all great options to get familiar with tracking. The only reasons why I mentioned those two trackers specifically is I have experience with them myself, and from someone who knew nothing about astrophotography, they were very easy to take around and set up. I will update the video description with a link to the Skytracker, though, so that people know there's a third option.
