This week I try out astrophotography with a 50mm lens. I've always wondered how the milkyway would look through a 50mm lens. This is normally the first fast prime people buy, so I thought I'd try it out...and sign up to my weekly emails: bit.ly/BHMemail
It's definitely opened my eyes to a different focal range that's worth trying.

Mike Smith You deserve way more, keep up the good work. I love your videos! I recently used my Sony Zeiss 50mm 1.4 for astrophotography and was pleasantly surprised with the almost non-existent coma aberration. It makes it really easy to stack and create panoramas.

Thanks so much!! I’m having lots of fun making these videos and there a lot more to come! I’ve heard great things about the sigma 50mm. That’s good to know it has almost no coma aberration! Yeah, with my old canon 50mm 1.4 I avoid panos for that very reason!! 👍

When shooting with a 50 on full frame or a 35 on crop, you should consider stacking photos to remove the noise or building a pano from overlapped images to get more than the core. This gives amazing detail that you can’t get at the wider focal lengths. Try using an L bracket to mount your camera for the pano’s in portrait orientation.
@mikesphotography

A great bit of advice Mike! Stacking definitely reduces noise in the final image. I’m planning a tutorial on stacking images soon. 👍

One beautiful thing about shooting the universe is that its beautiful at any focal length. I prefer 35mm and 135, then 300, 500 and 800. I have not done much past 800mm because of mount auto guiding constraints.

Exactly!! It's fantastic going out for a night under the stars even without a camera. I'm more of a wide field shooter, but I'm looking at getting a tracking mount. The guys we go and shoot with have everything from the 14mm superwide lenses right through to some really sophisticated deep space imaging tech...I think we have a huge telescope in the group that has around a 2000mm focal length. I haven't tried the 35mm yet but would be interesting to see what that could deliver.

@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Khotta, Yeah, the Sony’s have great low light capabilities, and the sensors are also iso invariant which really helps. The best thing to do with your m50 is buy a lens with a really wide aperture, something between 10-20mm (if shooting wide field astrophotography) with an aperture of at least 2.8. The sigma 18-35mm 1.8 is a great lens that could be adapted to the m50 and would give you some great results.
@foozystripes2857
@foozystripes2857 5 жыл бұрын
Also there seems to be a new focal reducer from viltrox for the m50 now, which would give you a little headroom. Saw a video on it the other day. Therefore it might help with that low light conditions when putting a good full frame prime lense with a wide aperture, such as 1.8 or lower. Just look it up here on KZfaq, it is pretty new.
@mikesphotography

@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! I'd follow the guidelines I set out in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jraGeKiavsC1c30.html As for compositions, with the 50mm, I'd look for places where there is a mountain with the milkyway rising above it, or a tree in the distance, just something where you can get a bit of the landscape in with the milkyway core in there as well. You would also have to use something like photopills to plan your shoot, so the milkyway is in the right place when you go there as well. I hope that helps 👍

Thank you Bryan! 😁👍 With the t6i, I'd keep the iso to a maximum of 800, but then with the 50mm, the exposure time will have to be about 4 - 5 seconds, so then you would need take about 20 frames and then stack them together. Alyn Wallace did a great video on this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5pza8x91OCpnY0.html I hope that helps. 😁👍

@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
It’s very similar with the 35mm lens on the a6000. Just use the 300 rule to work out your shutterspeed. So divide 300 by 35...this will give you a Mac exposure time of 8.5 seconds. 👍

What do the three legs of the exposure triangle ideally look like when you shoot astro photography?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 4 жыл бұрын
They look all messed up!! With astrophotography...any type of shooting...there’s not “one size fits all” as the conditions change a lot from night to night and location to location. The best bet with astrophotography is to set your shutter speed first with the 500/300 rule in mind, then set your aperture as wide as possible...then set your iso between 2000 and 10,000 depending on the other two settings and what camera you have. With astrophotography, normally you have hours and hours if you’ve planned it right and you’re lucky with the weather, so it’s a slow chilled shoot with lots of time to play with your settings. I get my initial settings, make sure focus is good and then dial in the settings for the night and the conditions at hand... I hope that helps. 👍

What I heard is the more mega pixel of the censor, the shorter shutter speed to get non-star trail. Base on another formula , I think 50 mm on 42 mega pixels camera will need the max 5 secs exposure , if longer than that , we can see the star trail. If I am wrong, pls correct me. Regards
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what you want to use the image for. If it is just to be used on line, the 500 rule is fine, if you're going to produce a big print from it, then you need to follow that rule. What you're talking about is the NPF rule. (35 x aperture + 30 x pixel pitch) ÷ focal length = shutter speed in seconds. I'm not a big fan of it as it severely limits you to what you can get...and in reality, not many people will be producing massive prints from their images. I have one that I printed to A2 size...I took it using the 400 rule and no one ever asks why the stars are ever so slightly oval... Thanks for watching. 😁👍

Sorry for the slow response, I have just been going though my videos and I found a load that I hadn't been notified about including this one. That should be ok and you'll get some stars in your shot...and if you really want to get into it and enjoy your first few shoots with that lens, you'll want to get a faster lens when you can afford it, it does make all the difference...I dropped my 14mm samyang the other day and smashed the front element...gutted...so I'm frantically saving for a new one as soon as possible as I don't have a fast wide angle lens at the moment. @mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! They’re at various settings depending on the conditions. I’ll normally set my shutterspeed by using the 500 rule and the focal length, then get the aperture as wide as possible and lastly set the iso. As shooting the stars is normally quite a chilled session, you have time to play with the settings. So once I’ve shot a few, I’ll play with the settings, shooting some darker and brighter shots and trying different compositions...this will then give me different options when editing. I hope that helps

Hi Rajesh, it depends on what you will be shooting, your budget and the speed of your computer. If you have a fast computer and will be shooting in low light conditions, the a7r3 with the Tamron would be a nice setup. If you are doing more general photography and have a slightly slower computer for editing, get the a73 with the 24-105mm. The files will be smaller and you’ll have a bit more reach with the lens. @@mikesphotography Deep astro has it's pros and cons. It's less arty (the nature have already made it beautiful enough)) and very dependent on good equipment. Unlike a regular photography, where you still can get a masterpiece with an average consumer grade camera. And another thing - with deep astronomy there are only about 150-200 relatively easy objects in the night sky, that don't require research-grade equipment. Once you've done them - you done them. They will look the same in 1000 years :) All we can do is wait for them to reappear next year and make same object with more advanced gear :) We have a saying here - teach your kids astrophotography and they will never have money for alcohol and drugs :)) Oh, and by the way - subscribed!

Hi Alan, the canon eos RP would definitely be able to take shots like this. You just have to make sure you have a fast lens to soak up the light needed to get a good shot. Something like the samyang 14mm f2.8. Do they supply the adapter to ef mount with the canon RP?

Good video Mike! I am looking at the 50mm Canon as I am off to Iceland in Oct with my wife and we want to capture the MW with us in it and of course Northern Lights, what lens do you recommend? Thanks Simon
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! For the milkyway and northern lights, the 50mm would be ok to capture parts of it, but I'd also compliment that with a wide angle lens as well. If you get the sky full of the Aurora, you'll want to try to capture it all, or get it above some of the magnificent landscapes you will find in Iceland. Something like the 14mm Samyang if you're on a budget: amzn.to/3h5Mn0E Or the 14mm Sony if you have more to spend: amzn.to/3DTqBqz I hope that helps, and I hope you have a great trip! 😁👍

Hi Villiam, Try it at different apertures. At 1.8 you’ll get a lot of light into your camera, but like the 1.4, you might get a bit of distortion wide open, so the best bet would be to try lots of different apertures and then look at what you can get away with. Hello..recently got the rokinon 14mm f2.8 manual lens for the sony a7 III,I tested for sharpness by placing a part of the local newspaper at about 5 feet away or slightly less...placed the camera on the tripod,turned off steady shot and used focus magnification at 11.7x,then tried focus peaking and also without focus peaking,the letters in the newsprint didnt look tack sharp,in my opinion...what kind of sharpness can i expect from this lens?i called B&H photo and asked for a return shipment authorization and label...but i also spoke with a rep there and they advised that the wide angle on the lens would cause some distortion in reading newsprint...in my test i could read the newsprint,but the letter "e"in certain words didnt look tack sharp...i tried my kit lens on 28mm and used focus zoom and it was pretty sharp...i tried low iso,aperture priority,changing the f stop and the 14mm just didnt seem really sharp....the rep at B&H said the lens was made for landscape wide angle type shots and when i take pics outside of surrounding landscapes it seems decently sharp,but when you pixel peep,its not that sharp in my opinion...i plan on testing it in a few days for star shots and if im displeased im gonna exchange it for another or upgrade to the 24mm rokinon....any input or info would be appreciated,like how sharp is sharp for this lens?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Any budget lens will be less sharp than a top end professional lens. The factors will normally be tolerances, quality control and obviously quality of the glass used. The level of sharpness you require will depend on what you want to do with the image. Also if you pixel peep, you will notice all of the irregularities that the lens produces. I’ve successfully printed images up to A3 from my 14mm but I wouldn’t go much further than that. I do think I have a good version though as I’ve seen others that haven’t been able to reproduce the sharpness I can get. I am looking at replacing mine with a laowa 15mm f2. I’ve used some of the laowa lenses and the quality seems to be much higher. The best bet would be to go out and try it in real world circumstances and print the image out....if you don’t like it.....return the lens.

Bit confused at 1:10. Do you take the focal length of the lens (50mm), or the calculation for a cropped sensor. So for instance, 50x1.5=75 500/75=6.6

Hi, I have a Nikon D300 but ISO stop to increase at 3200. Not really, it continuos through H0.3 then H0.7 and the last one is H1.0 What does it means? How correspond those numbers?
@mikesphotography

I don’t shoot with Nikon’s but my good friend Sherif Ali does, he said: Hi Mike, it is a bit strange that ISO max is 3200. It reach as Hi 1.0 equivalent to 6400 and what corresponds to H0.3-0.7 is 1/3 increments. It is a very old camera and the iso has been capped as it’s very noisy at high ISO’s. I hope that makes sense. To get best results you want a really fast lens. Something with an aperture of 1.4 would be great and you should then get some good results.

@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Haha! Sorry! 🤦🏻‍♂️ technology is moving so fast these days!! The 24mm f2.8 would be better as it will let in more light. It will be hard to get a good star filled sky with a bit of the land in it as your camera is a crop sensor, but the f2.8 will be better. If you can find a cheap 12mm or something near that focal length, that has an even wider aperture, it will work even better when the milkyway is in the sky!

Hi Mike, what are you thought on using the A7iii kit lense to shoot Milky Way ?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question Abubakar, you can definitely do it, but with the 28mm focal length, it's a bit narrower than some of the super wides. This will limit your compositional choices a little. Also with the aperture, you might have to bump up the iso more than normal. One option is to take a series of photographs from a tripod in the same position, and then stack them afterwards. This will give you a much cleaner final image. I did a video on stacking a while back: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qKuFbM6BqN3TpIE.html&t If you use a PC, the equivalent program is called sequator. I hope that helps. 👍

@RaySweeting
@RaySweeting 5 жыл бұрын
Hi quick question would the adaptor chance your focal length?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray, No, all the adapter will do is make sure the focal length for that lens stays the same. Each lens is built for a certain camera. Each camera system has its own flange length which is the distance between the mounting point and the sensor. As DSLRs have the flappy mirror, they need more space between the mount and the sensor. Mirrorless cameras don't need that flange distance so the lens can be built differently to bring the optics closer to the sensor. All the adapter does is maintain the flange distance for that given lens, so it focusses on the sensor of the adapted camera. Does that make sense?

It depends on what camera you have. If it doesn't have a manual focus mode switch on the lens, in your menues it should have a focus mode option where you can choose MF to set it to manual focus. One of the problem is that none of the 50mm currently available are usable at full aperture on the stars. Canon, not good, sigma art, not good. Samyang F/1.4 not good. Just bought the Samyang F/1.2 XP and it seems it could be good enough, but not received it yet. Interested by comments from people who have used other brands (Nikon, Zeiss ?). Also the 500 rule is a rule, i.e. meant to be broken. It works if you shoot on the celestial equator, but in reality the rule should be longest_exposure_time=500/(focal_length_of_the_lens*cosine_of_the_declination). Provided you know what the declination is (it's like the latitude for the sky, =0 at the equator, +90° at the northern pole, and -90° at the southern pole). Said otherwise, the closer you are from the celestial pole the longer you can expose.
@mikesphotography

You’re correct on every point there Alain. I learned about the variation in the 500 rule recently when out shooting with some deep space astrophotographers. I’m probably going to do a video on this very point later in the year. The 50mm lenses do seem to be pretty bad at the widest apertures, maybe they know that people shooting at these apertures will be going for a soft, bokeh, background most of the time so they don’t worry too much about slight imperfections in the lenses towards the edges? Just a thought... Thanks for the comment though, good to hear your thoughts on the subject. 👍

So taking a sky shot with a Sony Alpha 290 and 50mm 18-55 lens is possible?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
The 290 is a crop sensor camera. With a 50mm prime lens you will be able to get shots of the stars but it will be a very tight frame and you’d have to use the 300 rule to work out your shutter speed. The 18-55mm kit lens isn’t great as it has a relatively small aperture so not brilliant to soak up stars. You would be able to get an image with it but you will be very limited with it.

If you have an 18-55mm, I’m guessing you have a crop sensor camera and the aperture will be about f3.5-5.6... You really need a lens with a wider aperture, at least f2.8, and a focal length of about 12mm to get a good shot of the milkyway. 👍

I have nikon d3400 and 50mm lens will this work too?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, the d3400 is a crop sensor so the shot would be a lot tighter but yes, the 50mm would work. You would have to follow the 300 rule though when it comes to working out your shutter speed though, so a max exposure time of 6 seconds.

Jonathan Antonio Raharjo - It’s a formula designed to give you the maximum exposure time before the stars start to blur and you get star trails due to the earths rotation. It’s pretty simple. It’s 500/the focal length in 35mm equivalent. So for full frame camera you simple divide 500 by the focal length. For APS-C crop sensor cameras you have to first convert your lens to its full frame equivalent. Depending on brand it’s either 1.5x and 1.6x while 4/3 cameras use 2x crop sensors. So for a Nikon camera which uses 1.5x crop sensors it’s 500/(focal length×1.5) = exposure time. A 50mm on a Nikon has an equivalent focal length of 75mm (50x1.5) So the maximum exposure time of a 50mm on a Nikon crop sensor camera would be 6 seconds. (rounded down from 6.6) 500/(50x1.5)=6.666666666666667. Converting your lens first is the most accurate solution vs the 300 rule given above which doesn’t always give the same results. Your 15-45mm Canon lens on an APS-C crop sensor camera will have a focal length equivalent of 24-72mm. Canon uses 1.6x crop sensors. So your maximum exposure time would be 20 seconds @ it’s widest angle. The 50mm would have a maximum exposure time of 6 seconds.

Hey can i take a picture of Andromeda with 50mm
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what camera body you will be using it with. With a crop sensor camera, you can get a half decent shot of it, but you might need a bit more focal length to fill the frame more. Also, for object like andromeda, you would have to stack your shots to get a cleaner data set to work with. Thanks for watching 😁👍

A 35mm lens would be better as you'd be able to get longer exposures. When the lockdown lifts, I'll hopefully be doing a video on shooting the stars with a 35mm lens. 😁 Thanks for watching 👍

I keep failing to understand why people expose the Milky Way in such a way that the stars look like snow. The Milky Way does NOT look like that if you sit down somewhere in the country side to have a look at it. It's a far more gentle experience. Go out and try again.
