ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 / FX80GE review after 3 weeks use. It severely underperforms with a forced 25W TDP and 2.2Ghz turbo limit when it power limits/throttles around 70 degrees C. One to avoid! Buy another model with proper cooling, the Core i7 8750H is one hot CPU!

@Amy Santti My FX504 model has i7 8750H, gtx 1060 , 120 HZ and intel wifi version cons: - I cant install more nvme SSD(has one 1 nvme slot with 1 sata) - less I/O ports - Loud because of very poor thermal performances(I keep mine at "overboost" all the time) - sometimes body gets oily and looks kinda ugly due to random smudges pros: -one of the best trackpad in the market -a really good screen, mine is (120Hz variant) -nice keyboard travel (but not the best feel/softer and satisfying like other ROG products) - can immediately turn down fun noise using fn+ F5 (in a couple of seconds you can go from "overboost" to "silent") - cannot really feel the crazy temps while gaming(using laptop's Keyboards) - REALLY GOOD SOUND CARD , I CAN USE DTS HEADPHONES Equalizer + REALTEK AUDIO Equalizer TOGETHER => MIND BLOWN FROM THE BASS AND FREQUENCY RESPONSE :) Very Important NOTE: Please, buy laptop according to your region. I live in India, and here we have very limited models with 120 Hz and gtx 1060 around 1300-1500USD rest are above 1800or 2000USD. (my laptop cost: USD1,377)

This is a good, unbiased review! I suspected the specs-to-pricing too good to be true - so they skimped on the HSF cooling, and the limited IO ports are just sad... I went with the Acer AN515-52-78AS instead.

Saw this laptop on sale for $73o and was thinking about picking it up and doing some upgrades. I feel like the complaints about the SSD, WiFi, and battery are non-issues. Those pieces can be upgraded or for energy you can simply plug into an outlet. Not having high end 4K support with higher Refresh isn't a big deal either, it's not a common thing in computing and 1080p is still holding strong as the standard. But it does seem like the overheating and cooling is a major issue with this model. Also personally I do not mind a loud fan, especially if I have a headset plugged in I probably wouldn't hear it even if the fan is blowing hard on max. But throttling is a big "no-no", and consumers / end users should not be expected to play around with voltages / undervolt their hardware. Thanks for checking it out and doing some investigative work. I appreciate your honest review.

After undervolting, the temperatures was around 75-80°c while playing farcry 5 at high settings, I'm quite satisfied with this , and noisy fans are not really a problem when you play games cuz you add headphones, about sound , use the dts app which is pre installed in the laptop, it makes it louder enough that you can play games without headphones and they cover up FAN NOISE

I bought one of these that has the i5 8300 H, 8 gb ram, and a gtx 1050 with 2 gigs vram. Has a 1 tb hdd, and i love everything about it. It's the perfect gaming laptop for a beginner. I have no cooling issues when using overboost mode, and I am not bothered at all with the sound it makes. Although there may be a better laptop for around the same price, I got it for $300 off ($800 cdn). My only issues are there is no usbc port (minor), no displayport (minor), and no disk drive (very minor). Very good for the price I got it at!

Been gaming with this for about 2 years now. This laptop took 2:51 for 1min 4k youtube render while 7700hq took 3:09 and 7300hq 3:51 so currently 8750H > 7700HQ > 7300HQ > 8550u/8250u correct me if i am wrong. I also want to know that is 8300H is worth upgrading from 7300HQ for gaming. And also was the 8750H undervolted while 4k 1 min encoding?
@Techtablets
@Techtablets 5 жыл бұрын
It wasn't much faster than the 7300HQ that got around 3:00 on the Legion R720 I reviewed, but Adobe now uses hardware acceleration. So I had to test software only. If it's hard all CPU's are now about 2-3x faster at encoding. That time was without an undervolt but I thnink on other systems with better cooling it will be even lower. I don't think going to 8300H is worth it for gaming. 8300H is basiclly like a 7700HQ. But for video editing and other more taxing work it's then worth it. For my 4k video edits which can be up to 60 clips the up to 8750H is noticable, but not in gaming.

Thanks, you work very hard to obtain these stats for us. I was asking these questions because i purchased acer helios 300 with 7300hq and after 2 month model with 8300H launched , so my mind was thinking a lot about performance difference. Also there was no one comparing 8250u/8550u with 7300hq. Again thanks

@@sahasarya4408 Nope, not even close. The 8300h is miles ahead of the 7700hq in a properly-cooled laptop. Extra 0.5ghz turbo all core and extra 2mb cache is a huge boost.

Thanks for the video, I had my eye on this model until I saw your video. Do you think the i5-8300H paired with a 1060 6gb will have the same overheating problem? The heating problem is really scary but there are not many other computers below 1k with a 1060 6gb and last gen cpu avaliable :\ The model also comes with a HDMI 2.0 and Intel 802.11ac Wave 2 wireless, wich corrects 2 of the negative points. Also mainly for gaming and light work (office) do you think the stretch of 100$+ is worth from an i5-8300H to i7-8750H? Once again, thanks for the eye opener!

You might be okay I think on the 8300H model, it's a cooler chip. But then again 1060 is hotter too. The stretch from 8300H to 8750H isn't worth it for gaming and light work, but for heavy work such as video editing, 3D design etc it is.

You're not crazy, it limits itself to 25W TDP instead of 45W capping it to 2.2Ghz on all cores only, instead of 3.6ghz. But if you cycles the fan modes it will jump back to 45W for a few minutes. Yes, we aren't getting the performance we paid for, but I see some owners in here calling me a hater because they don't want to hear it!......... Thanks for the comment. Also, by the way, do you lose battery life when off and not in use? I lost all the battey over the weekend when it was unplugged and off. never seen that!

@@Techtablets I've been having this discussion with at least a dozen of people, owners and potential buyers alike, and some refuse to believe. So long there are a few get it is worthy, but, now I understand why ASUS went this way, because they knew they will have an audience no matter what, those who couldn't care less if they get the performance they payed for. I wouldn't doubt ASUS will keep doing this, what worries me is if this becomes common trend among manufacturers, let's hope it's not. Regarding the battery, the most time my computer was off was about 10 hours, it was fully charged before turning it off. During that time it lost about 2%, but there was one time it lost 25% or more, couldn't determine what caused it and really didn't worry that much about it. Guess it is one more compromise this PC has.

@@AlainMichelReyesSotter The trouble is most games don't stress that CPU enough for people to even notice it's limited. I hope it's not becoming common place but it looks as if the new model the FX505 is exactly the same, ASUS force fan boost for good performance other wise it throttles on balanced mode. Shame really as my Strix i7 7700hq laptop was good which is why I bought this one.

Just saw the fx505 and I can’t believe they have changed/replaced/updated/sell alongside a new computer in less than 6 month but didn’t address the thermal limitation. Guess the only Asus models one can get are the ROG

that 25W limit won't go away, even with Throttlestop tinkering, and it just annoys me so much on why they would do this, when this laptop is perfectly capable of handling the load. Hell, my temps never go above 75 ddegrees at high performance with 3.8 ghz constant processor clocking, its just that the stuttering and framerate drops drive me crazy, because I paid for a laptop that can really hold its own with at least 2016-2017 games on high settings, or atleast its supposed to be on paper.

I completely understand the limitation of this laptop and for the past 2 days I'm researching and watch all the videos of this laptop about Thermal Throttling and reads the other external links some YT reviewers mentioned in their reviews. My one and only question Is this Laptop capable to edit 4k videos with Adobe Premiere Pro? Also, I was going to use Adobe After Effects and Illustration for beginners stuff, nothing Advance or complicated though. After knowing all these shortcomings, Is this laptop can fulfill my requirements? Please let me know. I have zero interest in Gaming and last game (mafia) I played maybe 12-13 years ago. P.S - I'm going to use with the 32-inch external 4k monitor.

I used it with a 27" ASUS monitor (100% sRGB one) and its TechTablets.com 1 second ago It's fine, but when I have it 100% stock (No undervolt, balanced fan mode) on editing large 4k videos and exporting it will throttle to 2.2Ghz and 25W. Temps hit over 75 degress it throttlings to 25W. Cycling the booster fan mode on and off seems to reset the TDP again until it hits over 75 degrees C. I just got the MSI GL63-8RD and zero issues there. Very good 82 degrees C no throttling. But the space bar is a bit funny, has to be press right dead in the center. But aside from that very good over all. Much better than the FX504. My video on the MSI GL63-8RD will be released soon.

The problem with asus is that they have a premium lineup and they try to sell it by making the rest of their line-up look less attractive!!! Happens to their zenbook line as well, even in 2018 they are releasing a usd 1.2k ultrabook with no PD charging and no thunderbolt(other than the cpu and ram the only upgrade over the 2017 model is the ssd where they finally use nvme instead of sata iii). For their vivobook lineup, they further handicap it by putting in a tiny battery. Honestly i no longer recommends asus to anyone anymore, as far as value goes they are now one of the worst in the market

Been using this laptop for 2 years now and gotta say its not that bad. When youre looking for a "gaming laptop" at this price range, ofcourse ur not getting the best features. But its "enough". Gaming has been smooth for me. im not a sucker for high fps so that is not an issue. Never had heating issue other then recently, playing heavy games like monster hunter world and forza horizon. But performance wise, it aint bad, downside is, the keyboard gets hot which makes it uncomfortable to play but that has not been a problem since i use controllers for these games and even if u need keyboards, u can just plug in an external one. Perfomance and speed has been great, the i7 cpu means i have no issue booting up chrome and what not. 8gb ram is sufficient. I can use photoshop, illustrator, chrome all at the same time. And again, im not a 24/7 virgin streamer who can only see things in 240hz and 120fps. I play games at a decent or below average graphic settings, as long as there are no lag spikes. Only issue i have for this laptop is yeah the screen is horrible. I dont usually care abt visual quality but since im a photographer, pictures look better on my phone than on this laptop which makes it hard to detect lighting and editing flaws. Second thing is the build. Its very cheap..well thats where they cut cost but after 1 year, the hinge is having problems and is breaking. The trackpad is having physical issue where the button is not working. But i think i can stay using this laptop for another year or so which is when i would buy a new laptop anyways. Honestly, for the price, i think this laptop is good enough for me. Note that i went here from a shitty laptop so its an upgrade for me. Thats why im praising it. But if ur coming from a better rig, then dont bother. And if ur looking for some serious gaming experience, you better off saving a bit more just to get an ROG I keep saying the price is affordable eventho u could probably build a better pc with this amount of money but this is a laptop, ofcourse its a bit pricey. But considering its a gaming laptop, the price is actually kinda good

I brought this laptop (my model FX504GM-EN151T) roughly 3 months ago, it has the 6gb 1060 and i5 8300h and honestly it's the best I've seen in this price segment, perhaps the i7 processor in this is just pointless as it can't handle the temps as mine seems to have very good thermals and is very capable when it comes to gaming. currently playing bo4 max setting on 1080p with solid 60fps and the same can be said for many AAA titles. In my opinion if your using this for gaming grab the i5 and 1060 and for that you have better battery performance and next to no throttling it works perfectly and hasn't disappointed me yet! I would like to add that my laptop hasn't been modified or overclocked in any way however if your like me and have the 8gb ram model I would suggest buying another 8gb 2666mhz ram module so you can take advantage of dual channel memory also I would consider changing the standard thermal paste for liquid metal. As stated above the temps I've witnessed are nothing to worry about however for long-term use doing this might prolong the life of the laptop not to mention keeping the fans at a lower rpm thus resulting in the system being quieter.

So The cooling for this laptop is fine. I have the same model as James Ward and it works a treat. All games work fine at 1080p on high/ultra settings so far. For info my i5 8300 runs at 3.9ghz 95% of the time anyway.. The cpu temp is 79c which is better than the I7 4710HQ + GTX 980m on my old laptop.

@@blazer666del If I only wanted the base clock, I would have bought a intel u processor and not a h processor, which are designed to sustain all core full turbo speed to meet the demands of heavy usage (like gaming or video rendering). GTA V, for example, would get a severely reduced fps if turbo is disabled (I have the 8300h as well).

@@alexclarke6924 i have the i51050 ti variant and while playing any game the tdp is locked to 25 w even on overboost mode...i get rare lags in games(average 125 1% low 100 0.1 low 60,(fifa 19))...is this the best performance i can get ? and yes is power limit throttling common for this laptop?

Asus FX504GM-EN151T if a spare slot is available then another 8gb ram seems excellent idea. Only 12 months warranty with ASUS though which puts me off.
