The ASUS Designo MX34VQ is an elegantly designed ultrawide monitor with some really nice specs. 3440x1440 @ 100Hz with a vibrant VA panel, FreeSync support and a $799 USD MSRP. Could this be the best "budget" ultrawide gaming monitor?

Or if you're not into gaming I think the Dell U3415W is still one of the best overall ultrawide monitors for productivity

This is pretty much the monitor I've been waiting for. A less expensive, curved ultrawide with Freesync and decent refresh rate. The phone charger is a bonus and I don't care all that much about the stand, although, I guess I should factor in a monitor stand to the price. I might wait for it to go on sale though or see if I can get a better price for it somewhere..

Love your reviewing style and the videography. Regarding the text clarity preferences, did you try running 'ClearType' on Windows or playing with the 'VividPixel' feature? They can both help with adjusting according to preferences and are necessary to counteract differences in subpixel structure on the two models.
@HelloDavid
@HelloDavid 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Fan of your work as well! I did play around with the ClearType on Windows (didn't test VividPixel) to see if it would make a difference. It does help but there's still something about the Dell I prefer over the Asus. I "feel" like there's always some color fringing around the black text on white on the VA panel. But it is pretty minor, and I'm not being totally scientific about how I'm testing it so it could just be my eyes playing tricks on me and I could be wrong about all of this. haha.
@HelloDavid
@HelloDavid 7 жыл бұрын
Looking at the text again on both monitors. It's probably just that I find the Asus panel very sharp (and I'm noticing the colors from the rgb subpixels) Reducing the "vividpixel" setting on the Asus helps soften/smooth the text a tad, but on the Dell by default I just find it a little more softer/smoother. Increasing the sharpness setting on the Dell makes it look pretty much identical to the Asus. But in the end I think text looks great on both. I just have a slight personal preference for the Dell but I'm sure you can tweak settings here and there to make it go either way.
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors 7 жыл бұрын
David Zhang Yeah, with everything really text rendition is pretty subjective. Glad to hear that you stilk found both to be decent in that respect though, and that reducing 'VividPixel' helped a bit.

Will you be reviewing the 32" version? I know it's limited to 75Hz and has other differences, but I'd be curious how well it stacks up. Some of us are still set on keeping to a standard aspect ratio vs. the ultra-wide one that's beginning to gain popularity. Though it boggles the mind why Asus wouldn't opt for a higher refresh rate, especially on a high-end monitor such as this.

@HelloDavid
@HelloDavid 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm totally biased but I think for productivity purposes the Dell U3415W is a clear winner being pretty much flawless minus the ips glow (especially great deal when on sale). For gaming, it's a toss up. This Asus monitor is looking great for FreeSync gaming, for Gsync the new AOC AG352UCG looks to be pretty good as well, and you have all the 1080 144Hz and 1440p Overclockable IPS panels. All of them have their benefits and flaws so no clear winner on the gaming side right now. It just depends on your priorities.

Excellent review. One thing that concerns me is the lack of smoothness you mentioned... is text noticeably blurry compared to IPS screens? And another thing... if you happen to do graphic design or use photoshop, do you find the 1800r curve to be distorting?
@HelloDavid
@HelloDavid 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The text isn't blurry on the Asus. It's nice and clear on both the Asus and Dell. I just slightly prefer reading text on the Dell over the Asus because it looks cleaner. (you can see my other comment to PC Monitor) I would never really notice unless I had a side by side comparison. I'm not a professional graphic designer, but I do find the 1800R a little distorting but still very usable. Perfectly fine for gaming and regular web browsing but I prefer 3800R overall since it feels more natural. But that's a personal preference. The bigger issue I see with this monitor for graphic design are the crushed blacks. I don't like the feeling that I'm missing those details.

Fuad Shaqiri I own one so here is a small review- I got it for $623 (sale and best offer on EBay normally $699) and it is fantastic. I use a 980 ti, but FreeSync works great on it, (I tested on my old R9 390) there is no flickering, and the range is large enough that it supports LFC (40-100hz). The stand on my one is matte, it used to be glossy but they updated the design. The stand is sturdy, and has no wobble, but it is a bit annoying that it has no adjustment capabilities. The OSD is bad, but I rarely ever use it. The curve is very curvy and very nice. The panel itself is amazing. I had previously used TN and IPS (the Acer X34 which I had to return because it had QC issues), and out of the box, the colours were bad, but after calibration, they were amazing. They were very vibrant and rich, just like how this MX34VQ is vibrant compared to the U3415W. This along with the next to no backlight bleed and very, very deep blacks have now made VA my favourite panel type. I do miss the IPS viewing angles, but the viewing angles are better than TN monitors and the colours are better anyway IMO. I can't see any smearing or ghosting either. The size of the damn thing and the 21:9 aspect ratio blew me away. The resolution of 3440x1440 looks very crisp and to my eyes text clarity is good. I love it.

Hey man, I have a question and would really appreciate if you could provide some feedback. On a German forum one guy with the same montior basically is on the same page as your regarding image quantity etc, BUT he says that Freesync flickering is a serious problem. Namely, he claims that flicker is happening not just at ~50fps but depending on the game with higher FPS. E.g. DOOM supposedly starts to flicker at around 55fps, while Dota2 already starts to flicker below 100fps and at around 87fps you're about to get an epileptic shock due to the flickering. Have you tested any other games other than BF1? Is there any chance you might test Dota2 (it's free) and confirm the claims? I was going to jump on this screen but the reports of flickering over a rather wide range of FPS is now keeping me from it. Please note that said flickering apparently differs from game to game, so I'm really interested how games other than BF1 behave. Thanks!
@HelloDavid
@HelloDavid 7 жыл бұрын
I'll give Dota 2 a quick test later. (I also played Just Cause 3 and Project Cars for my testing and had pretty much the same results as bf1) But as you said the experience will likely change from game to game, since a lot of it depends on the driver/freesync algorithm. From my testing anywhere from ~53fps to 48fps (but is most noticeable closer to 50) can cause some flickering (or more accurately described as brightness changes) So if you're averaging around 55fps on Doom, minor variations in fps could easily drop you into a flicker prone situation but is more or less noticeable depending on a wide number of factors outside our control. But I'm okay with it because I'll just drop quality/resolution for a higher fps. I find higher fps worth the graphical tradeoff for faster paced games.
@Denso481
@Denso481 7 жыл бұрын
I would greatly appreciate if you could give Dota 2 a quick run, thanks! I agree with you and all points. It's just that the one guy described it as a severe problem, and if the case with Dota true it's a deal breaker for me. I honestly still hope he just got a bad unit, but currently waiting for more cross references. No one has this thing yet, let alone made a review covering this issue, so your input will be greatly appreciated. Will also link to your video in the forum of course
@HelloDavid
@HelloDavid 7 жыл бұрын
I think I figured it out. Or something for them to test on their end. Dota2 has a built in frame limiter (usually defaults to 120) You need to raise this to the max (240 or turn it off completely) because it is causing the GPU to stall every time you hit the limit (it is causing the instantaneous fps to drop for a moment and hence the flicker). You can prove this by lowering the frame limiter to something much lower and you'll start seeing the flickering go crazy. Opening/closing menus will also stall the gpu and flicker the screen for a couple seconds. that is unavoidable and occurs in many games. Otherwise I don't see flickering during gameplay, as long as you stay out of the 50 fps range. Hope that helps.

Just got the monitor, but I only get 75Hz on it and looking through the menu I don't find an option for it either. I used a HDMI 2.0 and got 60 Hz and with the DisplayPort provided i got 75

Did you ever figure out how to get to 100Hz? I'm seeing the same issue.

I wonder if the flaws on this Samsung VA based Asus display are also present on the Microboard display? I also wonder if Asus plans to release firmware updates for this display to try and alleviate some of the issues.

rgray318 you have the "original" Samsung CF791 that is ~150$ more, but free of any of the mentioned flaws. vesa mountable, completely flicker free.

I know it's 1 year late but I did have the same issues with the Microboard display. I have the pixel inversioon issue. My channel has some videos about it as well.
