What's up everybody I got another Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage video for you guys today. This time I attempted to get some better cooing by redoing the LM and adding some washers for better mounting pressure. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned and I did not get better performance so I honestly wouldn't recommend doing this unless you're very tech-savvy and understand the risks. Plus understand it might not help like what happened to me. Though I will say idle temps are way better. But if you feel like giving it a shot let me know your results. I still wanted to show how to do it to for anyone interested. If you have any questions or requests of course feel free to ask.
Also have made a Discord server for this laptop where you can talk to each other and me about this awesome laptop / discord

Idk if you will see this message but I tried some things with cooling of this laptop and best thing is to: 1.Put very very thin layer of liquid metal on cpu and cooling since pressure on cpu is way better than on gpu so more metal makes worse temperatures 2. Use K5 Pro or any other thermal grease on VRMs (thin 1-1.5mm layer) 3. Use GELID Ultimate thermal Pads 0.5mm or any other 0.5 mm pads with good performance on GPU Vrams 4. Put way more metal on GPU than on CPU on die and cooling side since pressure here is way worse so to fill gap between die and cooling we use more liquid metal (cant look like river tho) :D After this I have 82-84degrees max on CPU and 74 on gpu core,78 on memory and hotspot max is 81-82 degrees only. Would be cool if any of you would like this comment and try if you have this laptop ofc then write your results here 🙂

You're very welcome. That's a good way to look at it it will last as long as the PS5 and Series X. Plus the G15s CPU is much more powerful so at least in CPU intensive games it will do better than either of them. I plan to keep mine permanently even when I upgraded to a 7000 series AMD laptop. I get way better temps in games like mw II with this laptop if I set APU sPPT to 40w and Platform sPPT to max while using the #3 fan curve preset for both cpu and gpu in manual mode in armory crate. I noticed that the #3 manual fan curve preset still allows for higher fan speeds then the turbo preset. No performance loss with cpu temps at 85c instead of 95c, and gpu at 85c and tjmax of 95c consistently even after hours of gameplay, in mw II at least. Great vid btw, def doing the hard work for the rest of us. With how hot these things get, repaste gonna be a must for all of us at some point.

I do not recommend thermal pads on the voltage converters and VRAM. The heat transfer is significantly worse to the heatsink and small cavities form. In high-performance laptops, always use a special thermal paste such as K5 pro.

I got some thermal grizzly extreme on the way that should be a little better. Some people were telling me thermal pads ruin trying to get better mounting pressure which was what I was trying to achieve here.
@Scale_Hardwarebox
@Scale_Hardwarebox Жыл бұрын
@@XxViciousxX This is also a reason why I do not recommend thermal pads. Since the contact pressure of the cooler changes, there may not be any real pressure on the CPU and GPU and thermal throttling may occur. From my own experience I experienced this with my gl702zc. I have removed the blue thermal paste that Asus uses as standard in their laptops and replaced it with thermal pads. I always had problems with micro stuttering and my cpu performance wasn't very good either. After I removed the pads and replaced them with k5 pro thermal paste, there are no more drops in performance and my cpu (r7 1700) is on desktop level in the cb23 benchmark.👍
@XxViciousxX
@XxViciousxX Жыл бұрын
@@Scale_Hardwarebox Now will my thermal grizzly extreme work or do you need a specific paste-like K5? I figured you could use any paste but thinking back what I took off was more like putty than paste. regardless hopefully it will work better than the thermal pads that I have on there now. don't want to have to keep taking it apart.
@Scale_Hardwarebox
@Scale_Hardwarebox Жыл бұрын
@@XxViciousxX It is best to use a thermal paste that is viscous. With k5 pro you have the advantage that it does not start to become liquid even under great heat. The application is not so easy because the paste is almost like chewing gum. But with a spatula it works quite well. When applying it is important that you first apply a 1mm thick layer, e.g. on the voltage converters, and then another drop on the middle which is again 1mm high. As soon as you mount the cooler, the paste compresses to the right thickness and you have perfect heat transfer.

I did retry with some thermal grizzly extreme as others also told me the pads were the reason. But I still get worse temps than stock. Even tried PTM which got closest to stock temps but still no cigar. Still going to try again maybe go back to LM and just keep retrying. Seems getting LM perfectly applied is harder on a CPU and GPU than just the raw die of a CPU (de-lided a bunch of CPUs in the past and never had an issue with my application) but I think I'm just failing on the LM application for whatever reason.

The issue with the laptop is not the thermal paste but the fin stack density. I have this laptop (for absolute best performance it is not that great, but for on the go gaming and battery life its a monster) and the liquid metal transfers heat amazingly to the vapor chamber, but the vapor chamber heat transfer to the fin stack via heatpipes (not to mention the very small fin stacks) is where the cooling has a problem. The other point is that heat density for single core applications is insane. That is from where most 95C temps come from. On manual mode you can get multi core games down to 67C by limiting the CPU to 20W. But that 20W will still get to 95C on a single core. I tested this laptop with both a laptop cooler, a vacum cooler, air conditioning, in summer and winter (summer 30C, winter -10C). It always hit 95C, even in silent mode (most commonly when "loading" a game). I even had this crazy idea to plug my custom watercooling loop to the laptop to see if the laptop would benefit from something like a XMG Oasis (I know you cannot install it on the Adv. edition, but was just curious). Decided not worth it since I could not implement it anyway. If we at least could undervolt.

I was hoping to get the same cooling as the guy in the Reddit post but after comments like this, I can only assume the guy either lied about the performance or maybe his was just a golden chip that did not require the same volta as mine. Still glad I made the video tho although I have not been able to get the temps back to stock levels yet.

@@XxViciousxX I may be wrong but I think the giant air holes in the liquid metal is just where the contact between the cooler and the CPU/GPU is actually making good contact so the liquid metal gets pushed outwards. (pump out effect, common in laptops). Probably if you sand the cooler (the most dangerous and dumbest thing to do perhaps) you could get better contact surface for the entire thing and nee only a minimal amount of LM. An additional advice is to NEVER pour the LM directly onto the cpu/gpu die. Put it on a separate thing (like a plastic) and pick it up from there with the q-tip , then apply. By pressing the needle directly on top of the die you run the risk of some LM that ahs gotten drier to block the rest until you overpush it and throw out a massive line of LM all over your laptop. The amount of LM that should be applied in most cases is "as little as possible, but it covers all the area". Personally I am waiting for Kryosheet to hit the market and then I will test on my own Advantage edition if it is better or a LM replace.

@@XxViciousxX I am in the process of testing the Kryosheets. So far they look promising, but the change of the goop for thermal pads had my laptop shutting down so I am a bit worried there. (followed someone else advice for thermal pad thickness, had to change all 1 mm think pads for 0.5mm. So far no shutdowns). I think the VRM/mosfets of the gpu are very poorly soldered and are literally at different heights so yeah.... So far it seems gpu and CPU are more often at higher temperatures BUT the performance is better and the absolute max temps have dropped. I am VERY interested (and scared) for how this will perform long term. As a fast side note, my scores used to be (original setup with LM ofc) 11300 Cinebench R23, to max 12010. Now, on performance mode it is 13224. With the Kryosheets. My laptop would shut down on extreme loads (like path of exile juiced map), so the shutting down thing is not exactly new, but it would happen very rearly.

The liquid metal application was fine, the problem is that these laptops are not suited for thermal pads, you can leave the stock or use thermal paste (mx4 works well). I don't have the same model but mine has the same vapor chamber heatsink. I tested mx4, mx6, k5 pro, thermal pads and noticed that the thermal paste is the only one that doesn't leave a "gap" between the cpu/gpu and the heatsink. Try and you will see a noticeable difference :), also be careful with the heatsink cuz it's kinda fragile and it can be "deformed".

Oh, that's why I tell people to disconnect it if you want to be careful. I broke a battery connector when I was like 13 or something. So ever since I don't disconnect the battery. So far I have never fried anything yet. But I'm always careful and don't poke around with conductive materials. If I want to get rid of some thermal compound for example I'll use a toothpick or a cotton swab vs poking it with a metal screwdriver for example. But you have to be super careful with the screws if one drops and touches the wrong stuff it will at least spark and do no damage at worst it will fry whatever it bridged the gap with.

I used some 91% ISO alcohol with some q-tips and paper towels. It was pretty annoying to get it all off but I eventually did. The battery is a very good thing to disconnect because if you accidentally say drop a screw and it hits the right spot it could bridge a connection spark and break something it might just spark and scare the heck out of you. The only reason I do not disconnect the batteries whenever I do anything in my laptops are steam deck or anything like that is because what I was a teenager I disconnected a battery and I ripped the connection right off the motherboard as I was trying to disconnect it so I've only ever damaged a laptop by disconnecting the battery So far I have never even sparked anything working on it with the battery still in but like I said it's playing with fire but my logic is I've broken a computer by disconnecting it and haven't by not so I'm just going to keep not disconnecting it from now on but that's just me.

I just did a video today that I'm uploading right now. Where I completely got rid of the springs and just used washers, got rid of some LM (think I used too much the first time around). Was thinking maybe the thermal pads are just too tall and are possibly making my mounting pressure worse. Was thinking about going back to thermal paste possibly. The fans look bad but the small dust is not going to hurt anything just looks kinda trashy. It was much worse before I basically didn't clean it on purpose for a month to make a cleaning video on how to clean fans. They're now all dusty again. Someone else in another video told me "what I was doing was pointless" and "using LM is what idiots do as the cooling system is the bottleneck" "it does not matter what I do I'll never have good temps it's a laptop get a desktop and stop being poor". really nice video!! :) it would be interesting too: 1-Check the exact speed at which the fans are turning. *If anyone has a new strix, please post here the maximum speed achieved*. I suppose over time, even after being cleaned... they can lose effectiveness. This bit of speed reduction can be quite relevant. 2-I saw that you have 2 ssd's and two kingston ram's (are these ram's overclocked?). Maybe removing 1 ssd temporarily disabling memory overclocking might help a bit. 3-As others have said, the thermal pads may have reduced the pressure on the processor and the gpu. I would replace it with a good quality terminal paste. 4-In addition, there is the temperature of the room. If your room is at 21 degrees Celcius, using a stress test in manual mode (all fans maxed out), you should get 96 degrees on the CPU (okay). And on the GPU, up to 88 degrees is ok.

Thank you very much. So far the CPU fan can get up to 7200 and the GPU gets up to 6800rpm on manual during high load. both m.2s actually stay very chilly considering they are in a laptop I don't think have seen either one get over 55c (plus only one is ever being used heavily at a time) I have changed the pads to some thermal grizzly extreme paste which did lower memory temps though got no improvement in CPU and GPU temps. I think mine just needs more volts than the other 5900HX CPUS. I saw a bunch of people getting under 90c after doing this. So figured id give it a try but have tried three times and still same old temps. Though it could be as simple as they are in a cooler room than I am and that's how they get better temps. Ram is not overclockable in the general sense no XMP (or whatever AMD's version is called) is allowed either. Though I know it can be overclocked in more unconventional methods as some people in my discord have done. I still plan to try messing with mounting pressure a little more but I think it just can't handle any more heat output with the cooling system it has. But it's not throttling or anything so I should not let the high temps get to me it has been running at those for over a year. Plus this thing gets put through lots more stress than it would receive during a regular user's normal wear and tear. Since I'm always making videos with it or editing videos with it it never gets shut off either just a restart here and there. Thank you very much for the advice though always apricate when people take the time to help.

Best go go with thermal putty vs. pads. After doing that I got slightly better temps not as good as stock though or anywhere near as good as the guys from Reddit were getting. Thats why I figured my CPU just needs more volts or something compared to some of these other people which is why mine gets much hotter.

Hey, I was hoping you could help me with some issues. If I am on a wifi with 2.4GHz frequeny and if bluetooth is also turned on then the internet speed drops down by a huge margin, like in KBps. I usually use a 5GHz wifi so this whole scenario is kinda avoided but have you ever experienced anything like it with your g15 advantage? Also, another problem is that the laptop would shut down on its own like someone removed the power supply when doing anything cpu/gpu intensive task. This only happens if the laptop is plugged in. I still have my warranty and got the technicians to look into it, they changed the thermal paste suspecting it was due to overheating, but it didnt resolve the problem. Do you have any idea or experienced anything like it? Thanks in advance :)
@XxViciousxX
@XxViciousxX Ай бұрын
I honestly did not use the 2.4ghz much since I was so close to my router I just used the 5ghz for extra speed. I also put a different Wifi card in since the Mediatek one was pretty bad and took like a solid minute to connect to the internet when id tun the laptop on. As well as not getting very good range or download speeds. So unfortunately can't comment much on the stock wifi of the laptop. The shutting down thing I have heard about as well as random restarts. But the only time mine shut down was when I tried to improve the cooling and said made it much worse. But that was my bad and not the laptop's fault in any way. Some have said the shutoff might be due to a bad power brick. Or possibly something on the motherboard that has started to let go but hasn't completely broken yet. If it's randomly restarting it might have the old GPU BIOS on it which was causing some issues.

@@XxViciousxX Even I figured that it was either heating problem or power supply problem. I called an asus technician, they changed the thermal paste but not the thermal pads. The problem could also be with the battery or the power brick as you mentioned. I suspected RAM as well, but if that were the case then the shutdown issue would still persist when not plugged in.

Not sure if you have understood why are you having worse temps then before BUT here is your main issue! You used freaking pads xD Not sure from where did you get idea to use 1mm and 0.5mm actual pads since you could have seen that Asus used thermal putty instead of pads! Your die to vapor chamber contact is terrible now but thx to LM and throttling your machine keeps pushing XD I have had same issue with Legion 5 Pro. In my case I was fine with really soft thermal pads but in Asus case you need thermal putty! something like K5 Pro or similar. If you have money to burn you could go with Honeywell PTM in pads or paste since they are great replacement but cost significantly more than K5 pro. Only then will you have actual good contact and pressure on you CPU/GPU dies and good dissipation. Hope it helps and if not sure check my Legion 5 Pro and Alphacool Video.

@XxViciousxX Жыл бұрын
Someone wanted to see how pads would work vs the paste so I decided to try it out. I got the pad measurements off an Asus message board where someone had tried the same thing. I recently went to Honeywell PTM with Thermal grizzly extreme for the VRAM, MOSFETS, and other things that had the putty on them kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kK6gnbte087IfHU.html. Got good temps on those items. I still can't get to the low temps a few others have gotten with washer mods and whatnot. But I went back to stock mounting pressure as I noticed the first time I tried the cheaper PTM (also a fan request) that adding washes puts so much pressure on the PTM that it smooshed it all out and leaves you with terrible temps.
@atechcheck
@atechcheck Жыл бұрын
@@XxViciousxX OK great :) yeah too much pressure will push it out. I would definitely stay with LM for CPU/GPU dies and use PTM or TG Extreme as pad replacement for VRMs and chokes! PTM can not compete with LM honestly :) Plus you have extra plate on CPU side that will make even more pressure and push out any paste pad overtime! Your GPU temps are just fine only CPU needs to come down a bit ;) LM for CPU PTM for GPU and I think you are good to go!

I keep it balanced so I don't raise the CPU temperature so much, for me it's a force 8 machine, for everything it has installed and everything ran in turbo mode with hours of play I think it may be that it overheated the CPU AND GPU, or whatever I said at the beginning factory fault

I normally have a really really good cooling pad to help me get those temps under control. I have since then taken off the liquid metal and put some Honeywell phase change pads on it.
