I would recommend that anyone looking to buy one go to a store and get some hands on time. I was convinced I'd want one (Zeph G16) from all the reviews, however, I found the build quality, the touch and feel of the device very 'consumer grade', if I can put it that way. Coming from a Dell Precision 7740 and a Surface 5 Pro, I found it very cheap feeling compared to those, let alone a Macbook. Not saying its a technically bad device, but it doesn't feel as premium as it looks in the review videos. Maybe that's not important to you at that price point, but for some it is, so do yourself a favour and go have a look in person 🙂

Man, I started watching laptop reviews when I had to buy a laptop in February. I bought a g14 2023 4060 then (for a grand on bestbuy). But didn’t stop watching reviews since then for some reason :) Just Josh, canucks, dave2d, Jarrod (sometimes) and you. @JoshCravesTech
@JoshCravesTech 21 күн бұрын
If it has better battery life then it may be worthwhile, or significantly improved performance. I personally think it'll be maybe 10-15% more powerful than the Intel Core Ultra and I'm not sure how it's going to do with battery life. It might even be worse with it having more cores now, but we'll see! It's supposed to release around July 15th.

Hi Great review. But I'm sensitive to screen flicker. I've heard the OLED has PWM under 60%. But uses DC dimming above 60%. I'm unfamiliar with that technology, could you plesase explain, it would be a big help. Thank you
@JoshCravesTech
@JoshCravesTech 21 күн бұрын
Oh shoot I keep forgetting to mention DC dimming. Thanks to G-Helper, you can use DC dimming all the way to 0%! It uses software brightness/gamma settings to reduce the brightness of the display instead of relying on PWM. So the only downside is that below 60% you might not get the most "accurate" gamma, but the tradeoff is probably worth it to not experience PWM.

Hi Josh, great video I’ve been watching your videos ever since I wanted a gaming laptop and they have been super helpful. I recently got a g14 2024 and have noticed the screen is grainy like on gray backgrounds, icons appear fuzzy and blurry. For example if I have an app minimized the corners expand and it’s like a gray border around them. Is that normal for the oled screens? Are you experiencing the same things.
@JoshCravesTech
@JoshCravesTech 12 күн бұрын
@@imcomp2819 yes, there is grain on gray backgrounds. I think I mentioned it in this video or the G16 review under the display chapter. Icons being blurry? Maybe that’s a scaling thing. They shouldn’t be blurry, although the subpixel layout of OLED is typically a little blurrier than IPS, but it shouldn’t be noticeable on a 14” display unless you have eagle eyes, lol. See if it changes if you switch between Eco mode (dGPU disabled) and Nvidia GPU-only mode (switch to this in Nvidia Control Panel). If it looks the same no matter what then yeah it’s probably just the nature of the display.

@JoshCravesTech
@JoshCravesTech 22 күн бұрын
@@directorz236 I think as long as you take precautions for basic OLED care then you can probably go through the whole life of the laptop without experiencing burn-in. They use an S-stripe subpixel layout, which is the best for preventing burn-in. Obviously I can’t guarantee it won’t happen, but it’s certainly one of the better panels.

Love your video man, Its great. I am stuck between G16 and the strix scar 16 2024 model in terms of display, The new scar has over 2000 dimming zones. Is there a visible image quality difference between an oled and a mini led ? What do you recommend overall bro, I really need to make a decision. Thanks.
@JoshCravesTech
@JoshCravesTech 21 күн бұрын
Yeah that's a tough one! Those are two VERY different laptops in terms of performance and thickness/battery. The mini-LED will of course be brighter and I've heard the 2,000 dimming zones has made blooming even more hard to notice. Some people have told me they don't really see it at all. So for brightness the Scar wins. The OLED will still always have more "perfect" contrast in comparison, but just won't be nearly as bright. And of course the G16 is a much thinner and lighter laptop with good battery life, while the Scar is a thicc powerhouse with lower battery life.

@@animenerd8633 so since Intel has a much lower base clock (like 1.5 GHz or something), disabling boost makes it run at a crawl. Some other issues with this 14' gaming model: 1. No on talks about the lack of a 2nd SSD slot (who wants to be dependent on external storage all the time and hassle with plugging\unplugging and carry an external storage solution everywhere just to be able to add more storage to a gaming laptop instead of it being internal). For gaming laptops this is a big deal as gaming libraries like Steam keep growing all the time, sometimes 20-100GB per game update. If you have many games, anything less than a 4TB/8TB dedicated SSD (minimum for gaming) is out of the question, sure, you can buy one SSD with those capacities but that's very limiting if you start adding many games. Over time, on gaming laptops games pile up and you run out of space. 2. The lack of a 4080/4090 option is an issue (mainly because of the lack of the 12/16GB memory they offer, but performance also for those who prefer): Although the 4070 capped to 100W, it only comes with a 8GB GDDR6 which isn't enough, in 2024 8GB GPU memory is certainly not enough, all the more so if you're playing 2024 AAA games. What about future gaming?? it will not last that long for most gamers, even shorter for heavy AAA gamers. So both in short and long term 4070 with only 8GB isn't enough, as gaming become more demanding, both in terms of storage space and the amount of memory needed. If you're not a heavy gamer then 4050/4060 will be enough, but that's an entry level gaming laptop. 3. As others have mentioned before, the lack of RAM upgradability. Sure, you can do with a 32GB option, but having a 64GB option would be better. Also, in case there's an issue with the memory, you'll be forced to replace the motherboard since it's soldered, and you better hope this happens while the laptop is under warranty, otherwise... you better have deep pockets or your wallet will be screaming in pain.

In this display's case the efective resolution we are getting is 1440x900 but multiplied by 2=2880*1800...this achieves perfect scaling without blurring/missing pixel edges,kinda like how apple does to it's retina displays. It's much more clearer than fractional scaling. We can always play in lower resolution to increase FPS,but this is just more important for productivity apps.

I was strongly considering the Yoga Pro 9i before, but after seeing so many reports and real-life reviews stating its battery life still leaves much to be desired with the same specs, I started to strongly consider something else. I haven't had a gaming laptop since an MSI GS with a 970 back in the day, and am still leery about OLED, but I think this laptop will really fit all of my needs: battery life for schooling, multi-tasking specs for how I use computers, and gaming specs for on-the-go gaming (and as a temporary stand-in if my desktop keels over before I can build a new one.) I do wish it was able to be optioned up to 64GB of RAM since it's soldered, it's quite odd that they aren't able to offer that when others of the same size can, and hiding 32GB behind an upgraded GPU many may not want is not the play (that's more of a Razer or Apple thing to do.)
@JoshCravesTech
@JoshCravesTech 21 күн бұрын
It's a very Razer/Apple move to make people upgrade their GPU to get more RAM. And I love that they only did it in some regions like the US. Unless you're cool with waiting for the AMD model to release in a couple weeks. But yeah I'm glad someone understands my sentiment with the Yoga. I was even strongly considering it for myself until I did (way too much) research on what actual users were experiencing and saw the same stuff. Even chatted with a couple owners who ended up returning theirs. It's just really hard to beat the G16 right now. One thing I recommend is sticking to the Asus-provided drivers, at least for the Intel graphics for best battery life. Newer drivers seem to all affect battery in some way.

@JoshCravesTech I'll be honest, the AMD model G16 draws no interest for me. I'm honestly not even happy to be getting the Core Ultra chips with their NPUs, but at least they're not completely all in on AI/Co-Pilot Recall BS yet, unlike the AMD AI 9 HX 370 almost certainly will be. It's the same reason I have absolutely 0 personal interest in buying any of the new SnapDragon Elite X laptops and their Microsoft-sponsored spyware. They could be absolutely perfect laptops in every way for my needs and I still wouldn't. I was excited for the new Yoga, which did make some much needed improvements in terms of the port selection (last years Slim Pro 9i 16" was a joke, considering the 14" had better ports, which is why they killed it off), but has been a disappointment otherwise. It has a great screen and webcam, but nothing else really on offer. As expensive as the G16 will be here in Canada, if it fits almost all of my checkboxes, it's worth the cost.

@@JoshCravesTechIt is deeply concerning how much of it is making its way into desktop hardware as well, but we'll have to see how long that bid lasts given the average users feelings on or usage of AI. I'm honestly shocked with how well-rounded the Intel version is, given how badly Intel has been doing in the last 10 years, but their Core Ultra lineup is surprisingly competent thus far for laptops. I'll probably end up snagging an AMD model of something smaller with mini-LED for maximum portability, longevity, and battery life as a travel device, but based on reviews the G16 is shaping up to be what I'd hoped the Yoga was, albeit with an OLED. Its webcam and screen brightness seem to leave something to be desired but these are minor items really.

Sort of a tough one to answer cause it's hard to give a "one-size-fits-all" profile for those, but I definitely suggest watching my G-Helper video to get a better understanding! However this is my basic suggestion, at least a starting point. 1. Battery saving: - Silent/Eco mode - CPU boost disabled - 60Hz - Brightness below half, keyboard lights off or low - Leave CPU power limits checkbox UNCHECKED - Leave fan checkbox UNCHECKED on GPU tab, move GPU power slider and dynamic boost slider all the way down. Overclock set to 0 on both. - Advanced tab - set an undervolt of around -15. 2. Max Performance - Start with Turbo and make a new profile - Leave CPU power limits checkbox UNCHECKED (unless you have a desired CPU level to reach) - Check fans checkbox and set fans to max or a little higher than the stock turbo mode - GPU tab: set overclock to +150 / +200 - Slide GPU power tab and dynamic boost all the way right - Advanced tab - set undervolt of -15 again, or -20 and beyond if things don't crash Don't touch core clock limit or temp limit unless you know what you're doing it for. Most people don't need to touch the CPU sliders either unless again you know what you're doing it for. I see a lot of people mess up a lot by clicking that "apply power limits" checkbox without knowing why they did it. Hope this helps!

Intel tweaked the idle and light power consumption on the new chips. It can last longer than older gens at very light tasks ... But that's efficiency under only one workload and doesn't speak to efficiency as a whole. I've benchmarked both of these units extensively and Intel performance falls off a cliff below 20w. We found the AMD chips have more low power performance when on battery. This means that as you do more complex tasks than just watching a KZfaq video, you'll see the Intel needing more power to accomplish the same task. Also, the G16 has a larger battery ... So the fact that it has the same battery life as the smaller unit, even in your very light test, indicates it needs more juice, even if some of that is the larger panel (but lower res).

I definitely like this video as far as the in depth review on the g14 and g16, but i have to say where you lost me is with the battery life of the g14 2024. At best in silent mode only playing a KZfaq video [DGPU DISABLED], I’m using 15w and the laptop at best gives about 5-6hrs and nowhere near the 9-10hr mark. If you’re open to having a discussion about this specific stance on the battery situation on the g14 I’m available to have this discussion at a platform of your choosing. Currently as it stands, there has been no way possible to get this g14 laptop to last anything past 6hrs unfortunately and to leave the laptop just on without any activity so it can get 7hrs at best just makes Zero sense.

@JoshCravesTech 20 күн бұрын
@@AJ-FL that’s super weird! I think I even have screenshots where I had it at -6W or so on the g14 while browsing on Edge! I know others are hitting that mark too. I’m thinking… which AMD drivers are you on? Maybe try bouncing between the Asus-provided ones and the latest from AMD and see if it makes a difference. Disable all startup tasks. Disable all unnecessary background services. Use G-Helper and use it to stop all Asus services. If it’s still around -15W then there’s another issue, maybe a program, driver, or Windows bug that is sipping your power.

@@AJ-FL If you exchanged it and even the second unit also was getting high discharge then it would have to be something on the software side and not hardware. I have the g16 4090 And the g14 4070 both 2024 models (wanted to try them out) Honest to goodness they’re both such amazing laptops. I love them both. I do favor my G14 just because of the form factor for travel and I don’t notice a huge drop off in games that I play like hell divers or Jedi Survivor. However, of course, the G16 display size mix with the 4090 is unbeatable , I do find for me personally with G helper settings both battery life are improved greatly but my G 14 always seems to out perform my G 6 battery life. I’m a g14 guy because I travel but if you are gonna be at home then you can’t go wrong. They are gorgeous either way and worth the upgrade imo Also thanks so much Josh! This was so helpful!

Bro I own a g15 ga503 from 2020 Specs are 5900hs and rtx 3060 I reposted cpu and gpu with thermal grizzly kryonaut like a month ago. Iam barely getting 100 fps on performance mode on fortnite And the funny thing is all the other games seem to do better . It's just fortnite, and I looked through all over the internet for fixes and couldn't find it. I thought it was thermal issues My cpu runs at 40watts at 97°c with gpu at 100 watts at 86°c and yes I swapped my gpu bios. All my other games perform well I get 60fps in rdr2 with all high settings, 120 to 144 fps in doom eternal high settings, 90 to 100 fps in uncharted 4, 45 to 60 fps in ratchet and clank, 60 to 90 fps in cyberpunk high settings, All these results are done in 1440p with dlss balanced. The only issue is forntite, and I really need help with this issue, Here's what I can conclude tho I think the igpu must be the issue because everything else seems fine, No form of throttling in gpu and cpu, The ram is working good and ssd has a wear of 96%. I can't find the issue with my laptop bro. I would really like some assistance pls Thanks in advance
