Heat treated ash? Hmm, interesting .. Inspired by your previous video, I also made a mini-longworth (ShortWorth?) chuck .. Now I need a good project for testing it .. this might be it! Thanks for all of the hard work!

Alan, I've watched both videos now, and see that you turn bracelets singly or perhaps occasionally in batches. As they are jewellery I checked my jeweller's chuck, and found that it expands from 1.9" to 3.0"and would allow all round external sanding of single items.A temporary soft jaw surface can easily be added and removed with acetone if required, and gives a step off the metal.. For batch production I am planning a project nesting stacked bracelets on my doughnut chuck, with terraced baseplate ;rods removed and temporarily held in a suitably sized cylinder whilst the inside is filled with sacrificial nonstick builders spacer aerosol foam; plus tailstock support.That would later be cut out for individually finishing the insides. Bracelets are not my interest, but the challenge must be met, so I shall report back sometime later. The jeweller's chuck spindle is only 12mm dia. and can be held in a Jacobs chuck should a suitable adapter not be available. A dedicated faceplate could replace the doughnut chuck.. Bernard.

Alan, soon after commenting I thought of my regular long nose jaws, which have 1 5/8" parallel outsides, probably enough for sanding 2 bracelets at a time.Good range of expansion, and broad elastic bands suitably placed before the bracelets would give grip from a soft surface; leaving space at each end for working. Even broader bands can be cut from old tyre inner tubes, as we used to make our rubber bands during WW2, should they be required for better grip. Probably just as fast and simpler than stacking 6 bangles. Hope I am not missing the point. Bernard.

@@AsWoodTurns Update following experimentation. Longnose jaws covered with a single turn of Coban, a 3M self adherent conforming elastic surgical bandage, work perfectly. Bracelets 51 to 71mm id can be gripped, and if necessary shims can be slipped below the bandage, allowing several bangles of slightly varying id to be sanded at once. For those measuring >73mm id I have a model engineers chuck with cole jaws to cope. Sorry about misspelling your name in a later video: We have an Allen in the family. Bernard.

The Longworth chucks work quite well. Have you experienced any problems with workpiece breakage due to over tightening the chuck? Your bracelets do appear to be quite thin. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and continue to stay safe.🙂🙂

To anyone that uses a metal lathe to turn wood after each use blow off chips especial on the lead screw and half nuts. I have owned several metal lathes in the 10” to 12” swing range. I purchased one at an estate sale that was used to turn wood most likely green wood the lathe looked very good and well cared for and l got a bargain. After getting it to the shop and set up and powered up and checking it out l could not engage the power feed low and behold the half nuts were packed full of wood chips must have been from wet wood and been the for years in and unheated shop as the area around the lead screw in contact with the packed chips had rusted to the point there was no threads at all one a length of about an 1-1/2” long, still a bargain but a learning experience also l like the video

Good things to do in the clean up. My impression on turning green wood on a metal lathe is that the previous owner missed a lot of the experience they would have had on a wood lathe. Each has plusses and minuses. They trick is to be able to use the best features of each. Alan

??? Alan when you make your screw faceplate what wood works best and grain orientation?. Really enjoy your videos have learnt so much thanks keep it up

Go back to my video on "Five Options For Woodturning Lathe Faceplates". Any close grain hard grains should do. Many use maple. I use poplar. it is less expensive and serves well. In any wood, I flood the threads with thin CA, let dry overnight, and run the tap in again. I don't think I have retired any for thread issues. Alan
