Sandy here's a magic formula Take the amount of money you need to live on one year and multiply that by 20 and that will give you how much money you need to retire safely. So if we take that $1500 dollars a month and Multiply that by 12 that gives us $18,000 dollars a year Now we will multiply that by 20 and you'll need $360,000 to has saved to allow you to live on that money of $1500 a month. Sandy let me know what you think about this formula I will be very interested to know if this is encouragement or if it is a discouraging thought. Please let me know. I am also good with money! when I retired last year, I refinaced my house to lower interest rate and extended the mortgage ( I live in Denver) NO contingency on selling my home when I want out...I think I want out. I also was paying huge amount on mortgage insurance. I live on a tight budget, but I can do it now...my house payment went from 1,283 per month to 798 per month! ....so it cost me a little bit to retire and penalized if I work at all and make more than I receive, because I did retire early. America is all about the penalty! so tired of it. Especially hard working people that took care of my square foot and have not Cost the government money! It's not even about Trump it's about the American mentality. I want to go back to where people are more humble and not so angry all the time. Please send me good wishes if anyone reads this. the Universe or all that is (God) likes us to support ourselves. Thank you, Namaste.

This reminds me of advice an uncle gave me when I was 30 something. My income was from sales commissions. He was in the same line of work & said "you need to live a lifestyle that you can sustain through the lean times & don't get into debt with a bigger car or house during the flush times." A similar philosophy, ¿verdad?

Hi Jerry & Lori, This video seemed like it had a lot of good suggestions, and I am so jealous of these two- how amazing to have had the foresight & money smarts to plan young! I guess I fell victim to the myth of invincibility somewhat- I knew one day I'd get old, but man! That day came so much faster than I expected! Back when this couple was being so smart, I thought I had many years to figure all this out. That, plus life putting roadblocks in my way, that really slowed down my progress toward finishing my education & building my career! I have a lot of admiration for people like this couple! Anyway, Jerry- I can't hear most of this interview. I don't know if it's possible for you to invest in some microphones, or to ask your interviewees to speak up a little? Although it seems like others can hear it fine, so perhaps it's just my tablet? I've had this trouble with several of your interviews. I'd love to be able to hear more! (And yes, I do feel really old - but I'm actually only 40. Dumb regarding saving/investing early in life, but I haven't lost my hearing, yet...) Hope you two are doing well. You're still the cutest couple ever!

"Your Money Or Your Life" was a great book. Pay down your debt, reduce expenses, increase investment income, all very sound advice. The problem was the volatility of the economy. The authors of the book recommended investing only in government bonds. But coupon rates started an ever downward trend. It was tempting to search for higher earning investments. Then things like the 2008 economic collapse would happen. Also gyrations in the value of the dollar made it hard to anticipate how much income one would need to retire early in a "cheap" country. Early retirement is tricky, and the best laid plans of mice and men...

"Your Money or Your Life" has been updated to recommend investing in low cost Index mutual funds such as Vanguard Index 500 or similar funds instead of Government Bonds.
@prieten49
@prieten49 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I'm sure the book is worth a second read. I found it ironic that one of the authors had been a stock broker before he retired, and yet recommended government bonds. Better safe than sorry was his motto. Low cost mutual funds and ETF funds certainly are the best way to get a diversified portfolio. However, there is still much more uncertainty involved. The best results historically come from significant allocation to stocks, long-term investing and dollar cost averaging. But past history is never a guarantee of future performance. The collapse of 2008 hit my retirement funds hard. They have since recovered but who knows what tomorrow holds. I'm not quitting my day job. I'm glad Social Security still exists.

It's a shame that one of the authors of "Your Money or Your Life" died at age 58 of cancer. Still, he did retire at age 31, so he had 27 years of relative freedom from wage slavery. It should have been much longer though, and I note he did not have any children. I wonder about the couple here in that respect. mobile.nytimes.com/1997/01/27/us/joe-dominguez-58-championed-a-simple-and-frugal-life-style.html

I have no debt. I have NO health care since Obama changed things and doubled mine. Still, have not seen a doctor in 12 years! I am 63 retired hairstylist with many other skills and newly acquired skills. It's about being useful. I don't want to just sit around eating papaya. I like helping people. I am of Mexican descent born in TX. I speak Spanish unlike some people my age that never learned. I feel really blessed all the decisions I have ever made that felt exciting became the next big thing. This feels like the next big thing. Can I do it? or am I just excited of the potential? I receive $1,482 per month on SSI...I still have a few clients (5) that have no problem with doing hair in the kitchen (lol) It could be a nice side thing or more energy philanthropy since bartering seems to be in vogue...YES leave out money... from what I am seeing I can do this on almost $1,500 hundred a month!

When you keep a budget and try to determine spending in retirement, you can separate out cost that won't exist in retirement. If you aren't going to have a house in retirement, say you will sell it and travel, subtract out all home repair, that won't exist in retirement. It really isn't a budget that I'm talking about, it is just tracking your spending so you know what to subtract. Your retirement spending will be different so by tracking spending, it is easy to determine what you'll need in retirement.

I believe there is a market to hook people up who are Singletarians that would like a shared first experience. Roommates kinda deal. I imagine people doing this have to have some personality traits that are similar, freedom and adventure. I am starting my journey as of this morning when I was kinda feeling sorry for myself that I had no life. I have no life in Denver, cause I really don't want to live here anymore and I believe life in America is only going to get harder...If I can live within my SSI I am on it. I can have money left over to fly my daughter out to visit or help move her to Mexico too...I have a plan at least for me. My daughter is 27...and possibly moving to Seattle. Why? she needs her adventure. I am happily single since 01 I am a minimalist. I love nature and all the videos I hear the birds, like paradise. Stay excited!

One of the Russian novelists said that it is possible to live on very little money, but it's impossible to live on no money. There's also a thing called "diminishing marginal utility": the second doughnut doesn't deliver as much utility (or happiness) as the first one. Taking these two things together tells you that having some steady money in a poor country should be workable, and it's the first "lump" of cash that does most of the work. So if you have £100,000 and it kicks out £4,000, even after Brexit that's 176,000 Thai baht, or 14,666 a month. That rents you a nice apartment and allows you to eat well. All your "quotidian" needs are met. Anything else is useful, but it's that first lump of dough that really makes the difference. Most of the folk who think about retiring, or semi-retiring, need to think about that first, vital, steady, reliable, endless chunk of change. If Social Security doesn't provide it then something else has to. Relying on fanciful ideas about being a "digital nomad" is a recipe for disaster.

Another great video. Here's why I love Jerry Brown's videos: they are honest, detailed, genuinely informative and nothing is in them just because it looks or sounds good, only because it is useful and important and honest information from a wonderful couple who have no axe to grind other than the truth. This is one of the great videos - - especially because David and Jackie, as Jerry pointed out, didn't retire just to laze around and do nothing more with their lives. They are integrating into the community and reaching out to help others and to do good locally. Thanks David and Jackie for sharing with us all.

Mark Mexico is a very peaceful country compared to the Philippines. David and Jackie constructed there own home and I'm not sure what they paid for the home and land. You can buy land in Mexico and have a deed of trust putting your name. But the Land must be 50 km away from the ocean. Land that is less then 50 km from the ocean they have lease agreement. Another great video - and very good advice. Been following these strategies since I was 20 (53 now). And I will say, IT DOES PAY OFF!! And to the younger people - you WILL get older! I think what also needs to be stressed is that living on $28k in 2000 is NOT the same as living on $28k in 2017. Inflation should be taken into consideration. Even at a 1% inflation rate, $28k in 2000 is over $33k today (2017). And that's OK if you have investments that will generate enough to cover inflationary crawl. So - like it was stated - you cannot live on all your investment income/capital gains - you need room to cover inflation.

THREE YEARS LATER -- I'm now 56 yrs old. I was cleared by my financial advisor that I can retire in 2021. HOWEVER, I'm not MENTALLY prepared to do this. I probably won't retire until 2022 - and I would want a side hustle to create some income (hopefully cover health insurance per month) and to keep me busy. Again - GREAT VIDEOS. Looking back, I was also very interested in living abroad - today - not as much. I live in Northern Ohio (yep - weather is not great 4 months out of the year), however costs are REALLY low - and there is quite a bit of activities to engage in.

Winky formula for retirement? I'll give you one. Take the income that you would like to live in a year and multiply it by 20 and that will give you how much money a person needs to save for a safe retirement. If you keep that money invested in a Active portfolio that money the last you 30 years If you only take out 4% of your portfolio annually to live on and you are making on the average 8% income in your investment account. Important thing here is only use 4% to Live on. Winky thank You for subscribing to our KZfaq channel Lori and I appreciate You very much. To generate say $28.000 from your investments year after year by the time you were in your 40’s would require saving huge amounts of money while you were working, I think it is quite unrealistic for a normal person
@ariefraiser140
@ariefraiser140 3 жыл бұрын
To generate that amount of money using the 4% rule would require around $700,000 invested. That is a lot of money but for a couple who both work professional jobs making $50,000 each it's not that hard or crazy to reach. Saving and investing $40,000 a year at a 7% annual return gets you to $700,000 in a little over a decade. But forget that. Let's take a single 25 year old making around $40,000 a year. Saving and investing 30 percent or about $12,000 a year will get them to $700,000 by age 47. The problem is people want to buy that four wheel drive truck that costs $600 a month to finance or they want to purchase that home that costs way too much.

We sold our home in the States to finance our home in Mexico. The cost and effort to maintain two homes did not make sense for us. We kept our small camper to vacation during the summer and fall in the States and Canada for 6 months. We still go back to the States for approximately 2 - 3 months each year mostly to visit family.
