You've such integrity Vivi on taking the freebies (although you should if they are in line with the ethos of your channel). Love the story about the couple in the Turkish shop. As you were talking about it I knew you were going to say a salt and pepper set (or cruet set as you said just seconds after I thought it) as it took me back to a holiday I had in Turkey. My son (about 7 at the time) and I were walking back from a stream with waterfalls in the countryside and there was a little house with a table and fruit on it that the owners were selling. A couple aged about 90 came out dressed head to toe in black. They were both about about 4'10" (I'm 5'2" so they were much smaller than me), both with round faces, both smiling. I've always thought they made a great set and think of them from time to time. They didn't speak English, I didn't speak much Turkish but my son who is half Turkish managed to ask for karpuz, lutfen (watermelon, please) as we were so hot and thirsty. They wouldn't take any money off us. They were so lovely. I've never forgotten them and thought at the time they were like a little salt and pepper set. Chatting to people while out and about is wonderful. I have great encounters that way.

I think I have a different point of view. I think, Vivi, that your integrity, the principles you live by, your modesty and gratitude for what you have - have absolutely nothing to do with external circumstances. You could have a million pounds in your bank account - it wouldn't change your character. And that's why I think it would be great if you reconsidered the 'buy me a coffee' or Patreon option. That way you give us the opportunity to thank you for your work. Just as you support people and organisations who share similar principles to yours - I'd love to share what I have with you. One of the things I really admire about you is how you do not compromise your ethics and morals. Yours is a truthful, down to earth channel where you give us a glimpse in to a bit of your real life not some artificial construct designed to get more followers. I enjoy seeing reviews of expensive items so I know what brands to look for in thrift shops and resale stores. I now recognize quality items for sale used because I see those videos. I have bought fantastic brands for 5.00 at thrift stores because I recognized them after watching videos. I think you have saved me money by teaching recipes and other helpful information so if I could support you somehow, I think it would be good.

My dad is 87 and can remember vividly his mother giving him cod liver oil as a child, he hated it. Apparently she would give it to them when they were in the bath - maybe she knew there was a chance they’d spit it out 😂😂

Vivi, sorry to be presumptuous, but have you thought about teaching? As a former librarian, I was always on the lookout for programming. You could create a series of how-to's, or start a writing class (always popular!) at your local branch. Yootube doesn't have to be your only resource. Also (sorry, but I love you so!) have you thought about pitching a column at your local rag or magazine? Editors need to fill those columns!

Lovely chat Vivi! So many people on youtube now do patreon and I am afraid I give them a miss. Not everyone can afford it and I don't always think the 'extra content' is worth bothering about. I suppose some make youtube a business and I can't blame them for that, plus it seems that youtube is making cuts to their payment when they put a lot of hours in making videos. I do buy them the odd coffee now and again or buy things from their shop, but I won't pay a monthly fee, its not for me. Bless you Vivi for all your videos xxx

Your memory of cod liver oil reminds me of the Icelandic skate liver oil I take for my joints. I have a deal with the dogs, they must have their daily dose of salmon oil, and I show them myself taking the skate liver oil (it is my logic, to make them inclined to take their own dose), I do tend to hold the spoonful in my mouth for a while before having the nerve to swallow and taste it. It is bearable. Yes occasional aftertaste. I remember having Tiptree Rosehip syrup as a child. I have recently made my own and also made fire apple cider vinegar for a wintertime immune booster. Grated beetroot and apple kvass is a very healthy drink too, made when both are in abundance. I have never had malt extract. Maybe I need to investigate it. I love your reminiscences of years gone by. Heres to a healthy immune system!

Thank you for the info on malt extract Vivi. I have been using it in gluten free bread recipes to try to get a more authentic bread flavour. It works quite well. I didnt think of any of its possible benefits.

It's the end of May, and we're still only just getting sunshine!! I use Turmeric in every dish, if I remember, & I'm not sure if it's made a difference. You're supposed to put a pinch of pepper with it and add to the last 5 minutes of cooking x

I was in Lyme Regis last weekend and found my perfect place called the Sanctuary Bookshop. Books stacked everywhere - you could hardly move, and they even did B&B. Might have to treat myself one day! I remember being given Virol as a kid which I remember liking as it contained malt extract, but wouldn't do for me being vegan now as I see that it contained bone marrow.

I’m glad you don’t accept adverts, freebies, etc., but surely there is some way to better monetize the talent & soul you share with us. I’d very willingly pay a cover charge to attend your story hour, book reviews, or readings from “What’s Vivi Done Now” …..at any other venue. Wouldn’t you consider trying a modest “buy me a coffee” run. Perhaps just once a month or so. At least until your book is published😉. If you get blowback, don’t repeat. Cod liver oil! Just thinking about it still sends unpleasant shivers down my spine today. We had to take a whole tablespoon of it every evening. To lessen the terrible taste, we had a small mint to suck on, but that didn't really help. I can very well understand your thoughts on freebies, affiliate links, Patreon, etc. and think they are very good. I subscribed to a KZfaq channel a few years ago when it was just being created. It got bigger and I really liked the content. However, there are now only a few videos that are accessible to everyone. The rest is via Patreon. A real shame. I think that a channel cannot exist without the “normal” members who neither can nor want to finance extras. So, now I'll continue watching your video. ❤❤❤

You talking about the cod liver oil had me remembering what our mother always gave us, sulphur and molasses. I remember the color and the taste but not really sure what it was to help with. I just know she said it was a spring tonic. We just took it because Mum said we had too lol.

We use to have malt and cod liver oil. It was like a runny toffee and you could taste the cod liver oil in it.

I take it "pudding " is the English equivalent of "dessert " here in USA. Over here pudding is a gelatinous substance eaten on its own or incorporated in other dessert dishes.

I started school in 66, we were given codliver oil in capsules , until grade 4, then it stopped in schools.. I loved them, I would bite them. I don't know anyone who likes it. :)

Have you considered fermenting veggies to support your gut bacteria? It is cheap and easy to do, all you need is a big jar (Auntie Teapot left you plenty of those 😊) and salt that hasn’t got nasty additives and veggies, I’d start with cabbage as that is the easiest

Vivi, you have integrity, which is something lacking these days. Regarding sponsorships, affiliates, etc., I have seen too many 'frugal' channel makers go down the rabbit hole of giving reviews to get free stuff or pushing you to Patreon (to get a recipe for example!). Often, you can tell their review is not sincere. When I hear "Today's video is sponsored by...." I cringe and lose respect for that channel. Also I don't like it when they ask you to buy something as they get a commission or to buy them a coffee or whatever. One should never ask someone to spend money when they are trying to save money! Many frugal channels are doing just that. You are one of the most intelligent ladies with a channel as well!

Hi Vivi, I like your integrity. I enjoy your channel, free from "sponsored by"... About cod liver oil, that is close to child abuse! Hahaha.. Being a Norwegian, I grew up with the stuff. At school, in winter time, the months with an "r" in it, we lined up for cod liver oil, or "tran" as we call it. I managed to skip it most of the times by being excused to go to the toilet or hiding the spoon, we had to bring out own spoon from home - I was creative! 😂 I also remember we lined up for fluoride mouthwash at scool. Those memories, I started school in 1975.

Just be true to yourself. Each to their own I hold my hands up, I did see one of these cheap Chinese cordless chain saws on a channel.... I liked the idea in principle ( due to my horrible arthritic hands) but the product did appear cheap and nasty, so I sought out that same gadget but a proper make , more robust and with proper chain guards ... I love it... but I wouldn't buy anything direct from a you tuber demo . ( I have recently culled a lot of channels I used to watch as a direct result of all this 'unboxing and demo' nonsense ) . You are so lucky having a Turkish supermarket... Gosh blast from the past, yes , I too remember Malt extract very claggy . Full of Vitamin B as I remember... was it a waste product from the brewing industry.. I do use Marmite these days, more savoury than sweet.

Intwresting that you say turmeric hasn't made a difference to your inflammation Vivi. I have used it daily...organic, both powdered and dried and it doesn't seem to have made any difference to my extreme digestive infkammation.

I know what you are talking about- as you know there are channels where YT-ers offer ‘special’ memberships ( patrons) for more exclusive content. This angers me , bc as you suggest , it smacks of the idea of an exclusionary ‘club’ which not all of us can afford, even though most of us helped BUILD that particular channel for years , beginning from its conception. I so admire you for not going the route of patreon.. it's so exclusive and can be damaging to those who can't afford it. I remember i was so found of a KZfaqr and her videos..i was going through a tough time and missing home (UK) , etc and once she had so many subscribers, she went patreon and posted less and less on KZfaq and in every video she'd talk about the fun videos in her patreon, etc. I was devastated, not because i was vain and believed in everything she posted about her colourful life and adorable cats, it was just because i was going through tough time alone in a foreign country, etc.. Anyway, when i remember this now, i laugh because i don't watch any of her videos now and I've created a much better and truer life..I'm hoping to start a channel too, maybe on Rumble and Odysee and if i have a patreon, it will be open to all and based on voluntary donations. Keep inspiring, keep smiling, you are on the right path.
