I had planned to install ATT fiber to my house last weekend. The ATT tech said he had to drill a hole to my outside wall and must be on the same side as the terminal box. So that the ONT will have power and will be in the kitchen. Then run the cable back outside the terminal box. The existing wire under my house is old telephone wire to my living room, which is where my ATT router is located. After seeing your video Stephen, I now know that the ATT tech i got was a lazy ass and didn't want to go under the crawl space to replace the wires. And to place the ONT box next to my router in the living room where it should be. Thanks for your video. Thumbs UP.

I am so excited, I just found out that for $10 more a month we can go from having 24Mbps to a 300Mbps fiber connection, we are starting with the 100Mbps because I bitched at them about how my 24Mbps service costing the exact same as the 100Mbps fiber service, so they are giving me a $20 a month credit for a year.

Wow! When I complained with spectrum, all they could give us, was a free install of a new modem because we weren't getting the guranteed speed which is 100mbps. And that's all they gave us! No credit or anything! Plus the phone wasn't even working for about 4 months and they said it wasn't working for only 2 months, so all they did was give us the 2 months free and that's it. Which was disappointing!

Just had 1G AT&T fiber installed a couple days back. 850-900 Gbit/s down and 680 or so up right after install. Being it's FTTH, figured it would be more symmetrical and consistent as it just tested at 550 down and 600 up, no other active devices on my home network. Kinda odd... Enjoyed the video and explanation, nice clean install too... good job. Edit: And now, a few minutes later, it's testing at: 944/963: down/up with 9 ms latency using AT&T's Speed Test. Now, that's more like it, right?

The installer came and wanted to put the ONT box in the back bedroom on an outside wall, instead of where I wanted it, in a room in the center of the house. There is access both below the house in a crawl space and in the attic to reach the room. Installer was JUST PLAIN LAZY!

I'm glad they were willing to run the inside Fiber to a central location to your network equipment area. I have all of my networking gear in my master closet. I have 12 drops around the house. I want them to place my ONT there in my closet. I recently ran a gray 1/2" conduit from the outside spot where the slack NID will go when they install it to my closet and placed three pull strings, one for AT&T Fiber and two more for possible future Fiber service pulls from other Fiber providers in my area. There are two other Fiber providers, one aerial and another buried in my yard. Those plus AT&T makes three Fiber providers running past me. LoL Quite rare, I know. Plus, there is a cable provider here that I am currently using until AT&T's website shows me as available for Fiber. The Fiber is there but the website hasn't updated to allow me to order just yet. :) Nice setup, BTW, man. Looks clean and orderly.

I work for Windstream Concord Telephone, which is a subsidiary of Windstream, our fiber is totally different from theirs. Their service seems to be a lot more complex and time consuming. We run fiber from the pole to the ONT which we mount outside on the side or wherever the old telephone NID of the home is. Then take a piece of CAT5 into the home whether it be the crawl space or into a ON-Q panel then right into the modem. We have pulled the fiber line indoors with large enterprises like Amazon, Carolinas Healthcare, etc. from there the same thing though, a CAT5 to the modem.

That is how AT&T used to do it here. I am not sure why they moved the ONT inside. Maybe it was a power issue for running it. I am happy with it being inside. Thanks for you comment and watching.

I am retired AT&T technician, thanks to your video I knew how I wanted my fiber installed. The AT&T tech wanted to run the fiber drop directly from pole to a hole in the wall in my office. I told him I wanted my fiber terminal for testing, and wanted the fiber drop pulled threw a conduit I have for all my communication wires from roof to craw space. Craw space very tight and he was a big guy, so I did the under house work, he cooperated 100% with me to get the job done right. Very happy with my fiber internet, how did I ever manage with DSL?

That ONT is small compared to the one installed by Frontier Fiber here in Los Angeles. I have two dedicated Fiber Drops coming into the house because of its size. The Gig Drop is for my gamer nephews and all the 4K streaming. The Second Fiber Drop is dedicated to myself as I work from home and engage in heavy video conferencing as well as heavy uploading of data. My second drop is 100/100 and that is more than enough for what I need to do.

great video and very helpful. My issue is that I do not know what to expect either and had no clue how much space would be needed. A lot to still discuss with the tech. There are now more install vids which is helpful but I am amazed at the differences between installs. I will say that if I am paying almost 100 a month for the internet connection alone I will be mad as all get out if I do not have the 1000mbps up and down as they say you will have. If I get 1000 down but 500 up they need to adjust the cost because that is not what they advertise nor is it what you pay for and are contracted to pay for. Just my opinions

ONT connects to the PON system in the central office. Its only job is NOT to convert optical to electrical (fiber to copper), its job in the chain is to be a modem. The gateway runs off the ONT. some ONTs are built into the gateway. just an fyi.

Nice video. Explanation was extremely helpful. We just signed up for it. However the person signing us up said that AT and T is asking customers to do their on diy install. I'm not a tech person nor have I done anything like that before. When I said the person I spoke with the previous day just straight up said "no charge installation and we can schedule." This other person assisting us said it's the company policy to encourage diy first. We received the package last Weds. I'd looked at install vids and really decided I didn't want to take this on. My girlfriend was unable to access the account (she's got cell service with them) over the weekend. So I'm going back to talk to them. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience?

So you have it all in your basement, and network cable in your walls to the other floors for those access points? I'm considering changing from Xfinity cable to AT&T Fiber. I don't think we can run cable through the house, but wonder if they could pull the cable through the areas where the coaxial was and perhaps make the connection in my living room. That or I'd have to put it all in the basement. Do I need a switch? Or can I just use my Linksys wifi router to send the signal?

Great video, but I wonder often how poorly protected (in the US) those (cables) fibers are (not piped on the wall) and are still using air lines, etc .. For example, if a internet connection is used with an burglar alarm device, it is too easy disconnect the fiber cord with the pliers and then break into the house.
@rborroto
@rborroto 6 жыл бұрын
I think most alarm systems these days (including mine) use a cellular (GSM) connection to the monitoring station, no longer relying on a cable anyone can simply cut outside the house. No one should rely on their internet connection for an alarm system!

If your like me, I have fiber optic with gigablast speeds, the numbers look good like you when I test it, but in real-world usage. I don’t notice it’s much quicker. Pages still load relatively slow. It’s not good being the fastest link. And you pay more for fiber optic, just to have slower bottlenecks, slow down the real world experience.

Very similar to Verizon Fios setup. Fiber to your building is the way to go. Speeds with a cable provider will slow down when its peak internet hours.

They slow down because cable has limited bandwidth that is shared with video and security.

AT&T fiber is ran throughout my entire neighborhood (newer development) including my street literally right through my front yard...but says my street doesn’t have availability on their address checker. I have a address validation case open so hopefully the engineers are able to get it on. Weird. Entire neighborhood has it touted even my street and the nearest AT&T handhold is in my direct neighbors yard.

Thanks for the walk through on the install. I will getting the 100 speed installed. Looks like they ran the line across like they would a cable Xfinity hookup. I currently have a TV cable running into the house the same way which has been disconnected. My assumption is that AT&T will run the fiber optics hookup the same way instead of underground from the alley way. Would you agree? FYI-I am currently using a DSL copper line hookup for my internet connection.

@Stephen Terrific video and easy to follow along with you. Is your setup only ATT internet, or does it also include their U-verse tv too? I’m trying to figure out how it would work with their U-verse tv which uses their WAP to connect to one of their wireless receivers using the same internet config you discuss in your video (building a home and plan to use the same setup, but also figure out how to make the tv part work).

Great video Steve! I was wondering how the fiber to Ethernet conversion was handled. AT&T is in the process of installing the innerduct in our neighborhood in which they will pull the fiber. So my fiber drop will be buried. I am currently an AT&T U-Verse customer on copper and at the maximum distant for copper based service.

ATT guy removed existing box at my moms house to opposite side of house, due to the original location being impossible to run wires to. Placed fiber install inside bedroom that now is unbearably hot 24/7 due to the heat emitting off of that along with routers. Now I know thanks to your video I had one lazy ass technician that I will be calling to complain on Monday morning. Pisses me off that my mom got screwed over by these idiots. Kinda ironic how the cable was able to originally be run the correct way, but “it was impossible to run the original way” my ass lol

Stephen, great video. Thanks for sharing. quick question. How or what is the best way to send a hard wired eithernet connection for ring doorbell or a tv that requires internet but would be better hardwired? Is that from the modem backend to the back end of the device or can this be done from the attic based on your wiring layout in this video?

Did the AT&T tech do wall drops from your attic? My AT&T tech told me a few months ago they no longer go up in the home's attic here where I live and do a wall drop. The tech told me the new line would tie into a new box mounted on the outside of my house and would travel from the box to where I wanted the service installed which was in a ground floor bedroom but the tech would then create a new jack on the inside of an exterior wall of my home and that's where my new service would connect. I decided not to do it so I'm still using AT&T's DSL 6.0 which the tech told me was going to be done away with in my area by February 2021. I will have to agree to upgrading to AT&T's fiber optic service or go with cable internet service instead.
@tonyyang5507
@tonyyang5507 3 жыл бұрын
You could do all the wall drops with a string before hand. When the tech gets there, they tie their fiber or cat5e onto your string and pull it through.

I have ATT FO as well. Networking is not my strong suit, and was just wondering if you could give some advice on how to make my wifi a bit more faster. My wired connection is fine, but my wifi range seems really low. My house isn't that big, and the wifi slows dramatically only about 40-50 feet away. Even with the different ghz connections. Do you need to buy a specific kind of Router to handle fo, or would it be better to just buy a wifi booster I can plug in, in the living room?

In car terms, how much horsepower will I lose due to drivetrain variables. : ) In other words, what will the actual speeds be once fiber gets to my house, if I don't have fiber cables running thru my house. Only the coaxial or DSL. Since it's converting to work in houses, what's the loss in speed translate to? Or is that an issue?
