I’ve been through hurricane Andrew, Katrina and Irma. After each hurricane we lost power for weeks, but the ATT copper landlines continued to work each time. When you have voip, you lose power, you lose phone service. With cell phone service, cell phone towers get damaged in a hurricane and also have limited life generator backup. But those “old technology” landlines continued to work

I live in a very rural and mountainous part of western NC where cell service is non-existent in some areas. ATT's old copper landline is the only form of communication for some of the folks that live out here that don't have internet service. This would be because of the physical phone wire that's used. It's old and requires a lot of maintenance, especially after a storm. VOIP would replace it so people could still use their phones and fax machines, but they would be dependant on Internet access. Landlines will often still work during a blackout.

Comcast and att are the only available to me in a metro area. Noone is interested in land-line service they want internet. Cellular technology is more effective now in emergency situations than land lines are. My post was centered around the fact that att is incapable of efficiently rolling out their fiber projects. They move around in various areas leaving unserved sections of cities and neighborhoods and pissing off customers for no reason. Running individual runs of fiber for small neighnorhoods is super inefficient and yet that's primarily what they are doing.

Yes, I think they should keep the copper wires up and running. There are still Senior Citizens, Handicapped and for the individuals who they are monitored for some other reason or another. Also those lines are life lines to people who don't have any other way to contact someone, especially in case of an emergency. Plus some people still pay to have landlines. Thanks.

The loss of copper lines is that emergency services tend to fail on a very large level due to depending on cell phone towers. Cell phone companies don't spend money on redundant towers. They don't have any real protocol for a cell network going down.
@crosslink1493
@crosslink1493 5 ай бұрын
That's already been addressed. The cell companies have some of their sites powered by back-up generators to maintain service. They also have 'prioritized' the cell service accounts of emergency service workers so they'll be able to use the system(s) is a regionwide disaster. That's the simple version. Right now the copper line system gets to be overwhelmed in a regional disaster. I was around for the Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles (1996) and not even emergency workers could make/get calls using the copper line system.

That has been my reason for not loosing our copper phone lines. I live in the city, but have had times when the power was out to all my neighbors who have phone through their cable. When there is no power at the street, there is no cable phone. At those times the cell towers are overwhelmed, and if you need to call for help, you're stuck. Copper phone lines have worked since the 1870s (Not 1970s), for us even during ice storms, as long as the lines aren't physically cut. Yep, and in some markets it's causing interference with people getting OTA TV signals, and most don't know it can be solved, or mostly solved with a quality 4G LTE/5G line filter placed just after the antenna cable, and right before the signal amp going directly to the TV if you're using an indoor TV antenna setup, or a simple outdoor antenna connected to only one TV, it gets a bit more complicated if you are using the same antenna for multiple TV's in your home. Also if you have 5G home internet it's a must as some gateways can affect your TV signals, so i have them on all 4 of the TV's in my house, and it cleared up about 1/3 of the channels in my area I was having some trouble with.

Beware the landline is now powered by batteries. In the Texas winter storm, Uri, the power was off three days and the batteries died. Windstream has old copper wires, but they are fiber in the background. Their system is a computer network tied to juction boxes in the neighborhood that switch to copper. These boxes have backup batteries in case of power outages. When the outage last days the batteries die. You can recharge your cell phone in your car and you are good to call the world that has power.

It's time to change the entire relationship between "the phone companies" and the government. First of all, remove any and all subsidies and financial incentives unique to communications and carriers. Second, charge them for easements and right-of-ways that were given to them when telephone lines were considered a lifeline, they should be required to remove any and all utility infrastructure from city, state, and federal lands...or....pay for access. Once this is done, then they can do what they like as an ordinary everyday business, they can't have it both ways.

Years ago we updated our landline and DSL service to fiber to the node and had to change to a digital (VoIP) phone due to no more analog service. But still copper from the pole to and in the house. Early last year AT&T started sending out mailings about upgrading to full fiber service. We held out until December when they put an end date on our service if we didn’t upgrade. After checking all our options, we chose to upgrade with AT&T. It was relatively painless. And yes, if the power is out VoIP doesn’t work. In our case, we use a battery backup that runs for about four hours so we are able to use our phone if needed. A lot of businesses use fiber and VoIP, including the school district I work for.

I'm in California and the local landline phone provider Frontier (Frontier, formerly Verizon, formerly GTE Phone Services, formerly AT&T!) has been pushing wireless phone systems/VOIP for quite a few years. I had a copper line system up until I retired; my employer (who paid for it) wanted me to have it for emergency purposes as its deemed more reliable. It was already pretty awful when I finally dropped it, lots of noise on the line and tough to get them out to service it as almost all of their 'copper line' service staff have retired. If the newer internet/VOIP systems have back-up power systems to cover electric power loss periods they should be OK.

Moving away from "twisted pair" phone lines is inevitable. I started working in the telecom industry in 1972 and spent most of my career there. I've seen a lot of tech come and go in that time. Copper cables are obsolete and cost money to maintain, as are the old telephone exchanges they connect to. Are the companies supposed to maintain them at a cost that exceeds revenue? The world is moving to fibre and also to 5G. For those beyond the reach of those, there are also satellite services such as Starlink. I moved my home phone to a VoIP service over 16 years ago. Demanding companies maintain the old network for little revenue is expecting them to lose a lot of money.

If AT&T wants to move us to fiber, then they need to actually RUN the fiber. They haven't run fiber in the bulk of the San Joaquin Valley and they continue to claim it will be installed 'soon.' The thing about their wanting to discontinue copper phone service- they only want to be removed from the Carrier of Last Resort listing, but they want to retain control of the infrastructure which they fail to maintain on a level comparable to PG&E.

UPDATE YOU: SKW Here! I received an email from Ring… Ring camera is now upping their price from $3.99 to $4.99 starting March 11… I was happy when it was $2.99 & I’m still irked that they added an extra dollar, now they’re changing it again to $5 a month… For that kind of price I would rather them store all of my videos for an entire year instead of randomly deleting crap, within 2 to 3 months. Before I was aware of the price change, I was going to cancel this month anyways but after receiving the email of the new news, I am officially canceling! I rarely use the thing anyways, only to record special moments, I have a video camera for that!

Add Revenue Drops in 2024. I guess it depends on the area/region and the media type? There are suprisingly few political ads on OTA television here in the Los Angeles TV region and there are a few competitive congressional races in the area you'd think would have candidate ads. However, I live in a competitive congressional district and the ads for the primary candidates are coming in fast and furious. Lots on KZfaq and streaming services (targeted to my zip code?) and YT does not have the 'skip' tab on them. There were two prior to today's CCNs video coming up. If its like that nationwide then YT must be hauling in some seriously good revenue from all those political ads this year.

The funny back story. Att sold the original continental cablevision which had become MediaOne to Comcast. Att sale to Comcast didn’t include the switches because they wanted them and wanted to lease back to Comcast. Att must have considered the switches a valuable asset. Soon afterwards voip became more valuable. Comcast stopped using the att switches. Att is stuck with an asset they could have partially dumped onto Comcast.

This week proves they shouldn't approve it. Also, having lived in places where phone service (including ATT's) reception wasn't good, you need a landline. I paid full price for ATT's service living 15 miles outside a major city despite getting reception maybe 50% of the time... because they got the best reception... so yes, landlines are still necessary... and ATT constantly screws non-metro area citizens in California. They are the WORST and the perfect example of why utility regulation is still needed... if it were up to them they would only provide decent service in cities and everyone in the country would be out of luck because investing outside of cities doesn't make financial sense unless it's a regulated requirement.

That would be nice, but given the track record of some companies like Frontier Communications, and how badly their poles are maintained in many areas with local/state governments having to sue them before they fix it, I have a feeling a lot of the lines will be left in place, along with the unneeded poles, but to be fair at the in many places one pole can carry several different services for different companies, which can make things more complicated.

Your name must be Rip Van Winkle! Back in 2007, I was installing small VoIP PBXs in small businesses. Many companies now give employees cell phones for their work phone or use VoIP desk phones. These days many companies use hosted PBX, with a VoIP PBX in "the cloud". One thing about VoIP is you're not limited to a physical phone. You could use a soft phone on a cell phone or computer.

Your comment might have validity if this was a government move. This is from an activist investor group specifically going after Disney because there are investors. The same has happened to other companies. A company like Amazon is likely too large for an activist group to break them up. Some companies have poison pills to stop an activist from taking action. One example would be diluting the value to stop them.

Great point you made about Disney being a very integrated company. This explains why Disney is suffering in many areas. I think they will be forced to break up to survive. Eventually, the parks and the studios will go their separate ways. Television and video streaming, including sports will be broken off into their own group; same with their video game division, etc. 5-10 years from now, Disney will not look the same or ever be the powerhouse that it once was. Just my opinion.

Regarding Disney: First, before anyone starts in with "Derp derp derp I hate Disney derp derp woke stuff fart fart fart!", don't. It's irrelevant and nobody cares. Having said that, I can see why some people would want a Disney break up, but it's like Luke mentioned, Disney's companies are all very intertwined; the movies dictate what goes on the streaming services and in the parks which in turn dictates what happens on the cruises and stage shows, etc. The Disney brands are too assimilated for them to really run separately.

@@robinwalker6941 That's quickly changing thanks for companies like T-Mobile, and Verizon expanding their 5G Home Internet coverage, plus for the past 2 decades I've worked for a nonprofit that deals with various senior programs, like meals on wheels, running a senior center, rural communications, etc.. while living in a small somewhat rural southern town, so when I say this I'm not just saying it, it's my job to know these facts, and fact is the remaining clients that I know whom still have a POTS landline are well over 90 years old, and don't have much time left, and I've been helping my clients find alternative solutions that save them money like 5G Home internet with outdoor antennas if they need it, and lower cost cell based VOIP boxes from companies like Verizon, and Straight Talk, if one carrier does not work try another, as they are all expanding to compete with each other, and things like cable internet. So yes we need to move beyond POTS lines, as the tech exist to make it happen, as their time is coming to an end if you like it, or not.

Landline has been obselete for years. Voice over ip is better and newer tech however you might need a server running 24/7 but there are analog phone adapters which can phone in directly instead of needing a server. By the way voip doesnt support leaving a message as you call and voicemail on the machine itself unless you buy an analog phone adapter for an older phone. You have to save the voicemail as a file and you may not get notified. The other thing about voip is that it stops 99% of spam calls and bots.
