We live in a moderately rural community outside of Silicon Valley. When we moved here, just over a decade before, the only type of internet access available in our area was through our phone lines. 2 years ago our land line was taken down by a tree. We called about it 2-3x per week and PG&E kept arguing that our lines worked as they should. After 3 months of trying to get them repaired, we gave up on them. At this point there was actually an alternative. The new company, thankfully, doesn’t use the phone lines. It’s been 3 years and those phone lines are STILL laying on the ground where the locals put them. We want to have a land line for emergencys, but we don’t have that choice…

I think it's because some internet providers are now bundling internet with landline service via VOIP, cutting into AT&T's profits. Prior to VOIP, they were leasing the copper lines from AT&T and were subject to AT&T raising prices, blocking access, and dragging their feet in facilitating connections for customers. People are leaving AT&T for better and cheaper service elsewhere

Another way to isolate and control us. Traditional land lines work even when power is out. Not the new landlines that are connected to the internet though so you gonna know the difference. Also if you call 911 from a cell phone they can’t always track you unlike a traditional landline. With health issues it’s a need. I don't understand the technology, but they are using the same lines for phone service that they do for internet, so what is the problem? WHY do they want to get rid of "land lines" ('cause clearly we still have the actual physical lines)? Someone explain to me. I don't understand. A lot of old people are too senile for cell phones, especially smart phones. I live with my 96 year old mother and set her up with a landline replacement internet phone after we got inadvertantly disconnected from ATT land line because of obnoxious phone sales selling her alternate land line service. I also keep a low cost cell phone for emergencies. The best part about losing a long held land line was the freedom from really obnoxious level of phone sales, scams and "charities". I now wonder if all the scammy obnoxious phone harrassment wasn't on purpose to help get rid of land lines. I mean, they could do the same thing on the other phones we have now, but they don't. . . much, anyway.

AT&T and Verizon started ditching the payphones when their revenue collectors were figuring out that their payphones were getting used MAYBE once every week OR LESS. With that kind of use it was costing AT&T and Verizon more to keep the payphones around. Thus they sold off their payphones to corporate communication parties that figured they could somehow extract profits from those not-used-much-at-all payphones. Well those "corporate communication" companies soon discovered that AT&T and Verizon sold off their payphones FOR A REASON and thus they TOO ripped out their payphones AS THEY WERE LOSING MASSIVIE MONIES TO KEEP THEM AROUND. *Thus why there is no payphone to be found ANYWHERE across North America...... even the payphones that used to be in front of the "general store" in the most remote rural and mountainous areas no long exist......*

Interesting points. Sure, wired landline phones are a thing of the past - and there are "toll" charges when using a copper wire phone - for example calling from Morgan Hill to San Jose comes with a per minute long distance charge. As for emergencies - yes, redundant technologies are always good - especially if the technologies use a different infrastructure. Back in the 80s and 90s amateur "ham" radio operators often offered free emergency communications (they kind of live for it from what I could see). I'm sure the local ham radio club could provide more information on their participation and if they work with local fire and police (often they do). But, yeah, copper wire phones are antiquated now - we have a generation of kids that were born after the cell phone explosion. I'm so old I remember when a phone number was 5 digits long.

You might want to brush up on VOIP as you OBVIOUSLY have internet. Via VOIP, many, MANY persons have already "cutoff" AT&T and yet they still have that "home" and "office" "landline" phone that does not NEED to use AT&Ts copper lines and thus AT&T has been losing "landline" customers at a consistent large amount for well over the last decade and, as a result, AT&T (and Verizon and etc.) are left with copper landline as a small niche product that they are "stuck with" as AT&T, Verizon, etc. make their OVERWHELMING revenue and profits from cellular and internet and various other DIGITAL communications. THAT is why AT&T wants out of the copper landline; Verizon is even further along in ditching their legacy copper landlines and selling off their mainly east coast lines to others...... AND THAT'S WHERE YOU HAVE HOPE IN THAT MAYBE, MAYBE AT&T will sell their copper lines to another communication carrier that will take over the AT&T copper assets and keep them going........BUT I WOULD NOT COUNT ON THAT HAPPENING.....
