One of the most frequent questions I get is on at what BPM should you start using the ankle motion, so today I wanted to expand a bit on the topic.
This is a snippet of the 'How To Use The Metronome In Our Practice' lesson that you can find here: jamespaynedrums.com/courses/h...

You really know how to break down the double bass drumming art rationally, and that really helps me plan my practicing sessions, thank you!

Direct drive is harder to control at lower bpm. Cause you are fighting against spring. Chain driive is opposite. So you need to go by the technique from which pedal you use. Beater height and spring tension also comes into play. Also need to work on flat foot technique, which will help with slower bpm. 130-170 bpm will be the hardest to control with ankle.

Perfect analogy with the natural swing of the pedal! I like how you approach drumming in like a bio-engineering/scientific kind of way!

Hey James, thanks for the video. To determine the regular leg motion speed, i think in quarter notes? To see the pedal moviment

Not many players with such high ability are able to explain what they're doing. You can. Very concisely. Btw, what beater are you using, they aren't the stock Tama Dyna-Sync ones. Many thanks.

I do! I think the settings they have are great and allow you to really set the feel you want from the pedal!

Great video! But can't you practise heel up ankle at slower tempo? Say like 130bpm, cause for my left foot it's pretty hard to get started at a faster bpm.

James, what type of footboard do you use? Shortboard or Longboard? :)

I use regular board, so I guess the Shortboard :)

It looks like James is playing a TAMA Dyna Sync Direct Drive pedal, which has a board length somewhat similar to a Speed Cobra; so I think most of us would think of it as a longboard. It certainly seems longer than something “standard”like an Iron Cobra or DW5000.
