The laboratory Movement, Interactions, Performance UR4334 of Nantes University presents its first study on the Drummer's Biomechanics.
This study analyzes the kinematics and muscle activations during the ankle technique, a double bass pedal technique, with which drummers reach very high speeds !
The scientists try to understand how drummers can contract their leg muscles so quickly (up to 10 times per second !), and how those muscle demands could lead to musculoskeletal disorders.

What an amazing study! I dont know, how sure it is, that the study with more drummers can be done, but I sure hope so! My wife and I are both drummers and we are practicing the ankle technique for a while now, but the progress is pretty slow, so we hope to get a better understanding of the whole process. We wish you guys all the best and thank you in advance! 😊

Dear Stanley, thank you so much for your feedback ! The study will be conducted end of 2022 / beginning 2023. We plan to include about 15-20 drummers, of various levels but mainly experts, so that we better understand this technique and how the body reacts to such extreme muscle demands. The process of learning this technique is also very interesting and we would love to study the muscle / tendon adaptations following the mastery of the ankle technique. This could be a second axis of research for later studies ;-) Thank you again, and all the best with the learning of the ankle technique !

I've been trying to grasp this technique for a year and a half now and it's so damn hard. I feel vindicated knowing it's such a complicated technique that merits a scientific study 😂

@@metalliclark86 I don't know. I've been traveling a lot and haven't played an actual bass drum pedal in a while. But practicing on the floor I'd say I've made progress.

@@king-manu2758 at least you're alive, some people just drop these things altogether. I've been starting to practice the ankle technique, and one thing every tutorial skips is training your ankles. Everyone talks about how important calves are, but for some reason ankles get unnoticed. Tiny daily doses of bodyweight training and stretching helps both with the strength and mind-body connection this motion needs. Give it a try!

AWESOME. WILL THIS INCLUDE THE SWIVEL TECHNIQUE AND IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR A 56 YEAR OLD DRUMMER WHO STILL HAS ENERGY? HOPE TO SEE A FEW OF MY FAVORITES JAMES PAYNE AND KERIM KRHIM LECTER IN THIS RESEARCH.

The swivel technique will probably be investigating in the future, for now we prefer to focus our research on the vertical technique of ankle technique, to have a fairly homogeneous group of drummers. Although at very high speeds, some drummers with the ankle technique still tend to swivel a bit. James Payne will be joining us on the beginning of March ! Don't hesitate to follow the Instagram of Facebook page for more infos.

Well it's now Feb 2023. Is there any update on the latest study, is it actually happening, and is there maybe a website or anything? Thanks, very interesting video!

Yes the study is happening ! You can follow the progress for now on Instagram and facebook "Drums Biomech". We started the experiments beginning of January, we plan to have around 20 drummers till December ! We organize public events around the project in parallel. James Payne will be joining us beginning of March. Thank you for the interest !

As a double bass enthusiast, who has watched many many double bass videos on the ankle technique, and spent years working on the technique myself, I am psyched that this study is being done. Very cool.

So guys what’s the findings, I’m very curious to know what the results are for the muscle firings?
@drumsbiomech2854
@drumsbiomech2854 Жыл бұрын
We will need to be a bit patient for definitive results, since the full study will be conducted end of 2022 / beginning of 2023... ;-) What I can tell you, is that we did some preliminary testing with High Density Electromyography, with which we were able to extract some muscle firings of the soleus during the ankle technique. The algorithms for muscle firings extraction are not yet mature enough to dissociate the movement noise from the muscle firings during movements that fast, so the results need to be interpreted cautiously. But it seemed, that the muscle units (that we think we successfully extracted) were firing synchronously, and that they all fired at the exact frequency of the ankle technique. This would mean that only one firing of several motor units of the muscle would create the movement, which would be extremely interesting if confirmed. To be continued !

@@drumsbiomech2854 Are the results out yet ? Would be very interested to see the papers that come out of this research. Trying to learn this motion at the moment, and I feel like muscle involvement is key. The movement really feels weird because as you stated in the video, it is triggered consciously for one or two strokes, but after that it goes into 'automatic' mode if that makes sense, and it becomes very hard to control the beater swing and the tempo. It only works if I keep most my other muscles relaxed and rely mostly on the calves though.

@drumsbiomech2854 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your offer and congratulations on reaching such high speeds ! We have had several requests to study and compare the heel toe technique. However, given the complexity of the ankle technique alone, we will first of all focus our research on this technique. But it is possible that we will address, in some future research, the technique of the heel toe.
