Possibly linkara's best review ever. I don't like having to buffer multiple videos, so thinking that you guys don't like to do that crap either I spliced the two parts to this review together making it easier to watch in one sitting.
I am not Linkara and I do not claim ownership of his content, spiderman, or anything shown here. AT4W belongs to Linkara, Spiderman belongs to Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko and One More Day was made by JMS and Joe Quesada, who I hope both die in horrific car accidents (not really, but you get the point).
Please enjoy more of Linkara's reviews at

It really irritates me when they make genius characters dumb and useless, just to advance the plot. Dr. Strange, Tony Stark, Mr. Fantastic, Hanky Pym... We all know that if it was another story, they'd fix a gunshot in a minute. Or even cure cancer. But no, a gunshot is too much this time. Screw you, Marvel.

I was thinking more Peter outwiting Mephisto in some fashion, although erasing the contract will cause Aunt May to die. But then again Peter could speak with her and spend "one more day" with her.

38:00 You know why people like me get into games like that? To inspire. This is a tough world, and sometimes it feels like there no hope, so we tell stories, we make games, we bring dreams to people who might not otherwise find them. We do it so that someone might want to emulate these stories, to bring the best that they are to world. We do it, so that one day, someone will play those games, and think, "I want to inspire people, too." THAT'S why people like me get into games.

You know one more day COULD'VE actually worked if it had been Mary Jane that got shot instead. Spiderman makes a deal with The devil to save her life, but in exchange the marriage never happen and are not together anymore. Yeah it still would've sucked that their marriage got retcon but it least it's more noble and more tragic then Pete giving up his marriage just to save his aunt who honestly should've stayed dead at the end of Issue 400!

Yeah. But you see it wasn't going to happen because Joe Quesada and the other heads of Marvel are all old farts who are mentally stuck in the 1970s and wanted everything in Spider-Man comics to be like that era. Hence why Mephisto went the extra mile to bring Harry back from the dead as well as Aunt May. Also something that was a result of this comic I wasn't aware of til a few years ago, that Linkara has never mentioned was that Black Cat's entire history was erased in the follow up comic to this so that she is now a complete stranger to Spider-Man. That's what is dumb. This whole thing by Joe Quesada was about way more than just getting rid of Spider-Man's marriage. It was about getting rid of everything every person growing up in the 90s liked. I grew up in the 90s and got into older 90s Spider-Man comics in 2001. I liked Black Cat being Spider-Man's good friend who knew his secret identity. I enjoyed the results of Harry's death. Peter moving on from it. But Joe Quesada and the other heads of Marvel hate me and anyone else who grew up on comics like that because they are selfish jerks.
@shadowspider9
@shadowspider9 9 жыл бұрын
I can't help but face-palm that this whole thing was created because Quesada believed readers could not identify with a character being a married adult with children and dealing with adult problem and wanted to take Peter back to being a single, broke, bachelor, with constant money, and relationship problems. Yet as of now Peter is the owner and opperator of Parker Industries. Making him a millionaire, playboy, genius, philanthropist. Which is WAY more difficult for readers to identify with.

Peter now owns his own tech company, which wile not as big as Stark's, is still worth a few mill, is single with his usual 'relationship problems', and has his own version Pepper Pott's. A female dwarf super genius who helps manage the business, and knows and help's Peter keep his secret identity. Just this last issue Parker Industries was attacked by a tech villain looking to steal Peter's new inventions and use them for himself.

During Secret Wars there will actually be a double sized one shot what if issue that shows what Spidey's life would have been like if he hadn't made the deal. With him still married and with a kid. It's the only Spidey comic I'm planing to buy until I see what the comics are like post reboot.

Wait, wait, wait. So the stated reason why the writers undid the marriage was because they supposedly couldn't create drama while Peter was married. Their solution to this problem was to write not one, not two, not three, but FOUR issues about this filled with nothing but drama for the sake of drama.............WHAT?! Are you kidding me!? Now I know people are going to say "but the drama in this comic sucked." That's not the point. We may think it sucks but apparently the writers thought this was an incredibly heartfelt story. They were PROUD of this! This means from their perspective they actually accomplished what they said they would NEVER be able to do thus rendering their entire argument null and void! WHAT THE FUCK!? .......Goddamn this story is stupid.

eartianwerewolf I can support reinvention, of course. But I read some of the pre OMD comics written by JMS, and they wrote her incredibly well. I'd like to see a "What If" story where Doctor Doom agrees to help Peter heal Aunt May, but he places a device inside of her that will keep her alive. Doom has the control that will decrease its power or shut it down, causing May to slowly die. Also, an enchantment is placed upon Peter which allows him to feel her pain and see his aunt dying in his mind when Doom shuts down the device. All Peter has to do is be a double agent in the Avengers for Doom and give him any information he desires. And, just to ensure he is not toying with him, he shows him what happens should he disobey--feeling his aunt's pain and seeing her in agony.

Actually, it makes perfect sense. Aunt May is really a super-powerful entity who feeds off Peter's emotions and is undetectable by Armor or Ghostrider and everything after the first page is an illusion she created. If things made sense, 20 different superheroes would have shown up before the comic started and had the answer: Werewolf Super Soldier FrankenMay. (The review wasn't working on the site, so I had to go here).

Y'know that's something that never made sense to me about the god and devil motif. I mean aren't god/devil/etc(s) all eternal? So why would the devil want a soul, he/she/they technically exist in all of time, ergo he/they should exist in all parallel universes correct? Souls are more like trading cards to them then. Hero: "I'll trade my soul!" Devil: "Oh please i have 40 of your souls already, give me something more."

One of the central concepts of Christian mythology is the idea of spiritual warfare between God and the Devil. Since, as you say, both combatants (and all of their underlings) are eternal, it makes no sense to fight over material things. Thus, the only things left to fight over are the souls of humans (which are also immortal). Another central concept is that God is infinitely powerful and thus His victory is inevitable. The Devil's motivation, then, is essentially that every soul he can take is a big 'f u' to God. Obviously your point about multiple universes still stands, but this is where the trope of the deal with the devil comes from. Although it could be that while parallel souls are still souls of the same people, they are different enough to still be interesting. So rather than saying "oh, I have 40 Spiderman souls already" it's more like "Ooh! I have Spider man 1-23 and 25-40, I'm just missing the one where he's married and might have a daughter in the future!"
@Firestar4041
@Firestar4041 9 жыл бұрын
JoshTheOther hence why i said there more like trading cards to them, just imagine: God: Oh come on Satan, ill give you a Spiderman 780 for your Batman 420 Satan: hmm, throw in a Iron Man 89 then we'll talk. Even all mighty, eternal, beings act as school ground kids over superheroes.

You know mefisto you could have just made a deal saying you would save aunt may if peter stops being a superhero , gives you his soul and never puts the costume again or both aunt may and his wife will die a in horrible agonizing pain and anguish. Also a little clause in the contract were he will also lose his powers and he can't die by suicide if he violates his part of the deal (but it will also say he can't die from suicide if they both die within the period of a year).Then I would set it up with a villain so it would lead spider man to using his powers to save the entire universe .After all of this he will still be in my court when he dies so I would've just got started with messing with his life . SMAXZO Again, Joe Quesada HATED Spidey being married. Hated it so much, he was willing to end it in the stupidest manner possible. He didn't care if the story was haphazard, insane, how bad it was done, as long as it ended Spidey's marriage. It's essentially comics' version of the scorched earth strategy.

The idea that young readers can't relate to Peter if he's married is utter BS. I started reading Spider-Man comics when I was a kid, during the time he and MJ were already married, and still he became my favorite superhero, along with Batman. Even when I could read comics that took place before that era, Peter was already dating MJ more often than not (I didn't learn about Gwen until I was 19, but that's another issue), so as far I was concerned, Spider-Man WAS a superhero MEANT to be married. And that didn't make him less identifiable for me in the slightest! On the contrary, it made him even more engaging! Plus, MJ is a lovely character, and their romance has some of the most heartwarming moments I remember in a comic book. So yeah, Joe Quesada. Way to make BS excuses.

Actually, I can see a pretty good way to fix this whole stupid issue. Since they stupidly tried to imply Mary-Jane remembered by making her an alcoholic, why not have Mephisto have decided that since Mary-Jane had the gall to mock him before it all, he pulled a switcher-oo, pulling Mary-Jane out of time before he rewrote time, then switched Mary-Jane with her alternate form, making it so that Mary-Jane was the only one who actually remembered it all, with no illusion or falsehood, but he told her that if she tries to tell Peter the truth, he'll "do something really bad"... I COULDN"T THINK OF ANYTHING THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE

Or use her loss of their baby. She has ideal dreams that seem tangible, and Nightmare morphs them into ironic hells that use her past to tear the family from her. The strain of it along with no one ale to help her ( not sure if she still knows of Dr. Strange’s magic) drives her to drink again. Mean, yes but Mephisto plays with Pete so why not go for broke.

I just thought of something, if Spiderman's writers really are unwilling to let him grow up why not do a reboot and a side effect of the spider bite is that he'll never age and still somewhat retain the mentality of a 17 year old? Ergo the eternal youth would be a double edged sword trait and then when he has to "be the grown up" In moments like this it's a real struggle for him and it would also isolate him from others because they will all grow older and die eventually while he stays young forever-which will make him WANT to be able to grow up either physically or mentally-then have a story event where this is possible for him but there will be some side effects that might make him think twice.
@ZontarDow
@ZontarDow 10 жыл бұрын
The problem with that idea is the fact that though he wouldn't age physically, he would still age mentally and fact the problem of the characters around him aging. You can't keep a 17 year old mentality for long even with a body that can't age, simply due to the fact that it isn't a result of your body aging but you gaining experience over time. Compounded is the fact that even though he's physically 17, everyone knows his real age and he would still go threw the motions of life like university and a job afterwards. It wouldn't be until his mid-20s anyone would even notice something's odd since most people in the 17-25 range aren't the easiest to distinguish.

You know what pisses me off the most about One More Day? *Where the blue blazing bloody bum fudge was SPIDER-MAN'S SPIDEY SENSE?!* No, seriously. Spidey-sense. Dafuq. The entire first issue had no reason to exist, HE WAS IN THE ROOM WITH THEM. Part of why these kinds of assassination attempts fail on Peter Parker is because of Spider-man's spidey-sense. His DANGER SENSE that lets him know ahead of time when something bad is going to happen to him. It's like the asshats in charge of this piece of fuck had no idea what Spider-man's most basic powers even WERE. And this is ignoring the fact that he's acted on his Spidey-sense flipping out before while having no idea why and EVERYONE INVOLVED WALKED OUT OKAY! Aunt May had no reason to get shot. Peter was never at risk. The assassin should NEVER HAVE SUCCEEDED at so much as firing a single bullet before getting fucked up the ass so thoroughly he spits webbing. Seriously. Why? WHY?!

MrTaurenshaman I loved Appolo and Midnighter! And then the New 52 came along and completely ruined them. In fact, they eliminated a lot of the classic relationships: Clark and Lois (and no, I do not like his relationship with Wonder Woman!), Barry and Iris, Green Arrow and Black Canary, Nightwing and Starfire/Batgirl, Batman and Catwoman (I'm not a big fan of that, but still...) and recently they had Batwoman and Maggie Sawyer break up as well. Really, the only relationship that survived the reboot was Aquaman and Mera (but they're not married, for some reason!). They're not against gay relationships, they are against relationships, period! And that is really, really sad. A married couple that I love in comics is Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Those two show that not only that relationships between superheroes can work, but also that interracial relationships can work as well. And they have the cuttest baby ever!

I think the best way to "reverse" the deal is to exploit a little loophole in it; Mephisto traded May's life for Peter's marriage, but he never said that after everyone's minds were wiped, Peter couldn't simply marry Mary Jane again if he felt so inclined. In that case, have Peter gradually strike up a relationship, then just as he pops the question, Mephisto appears, mentions the deal, and Peter points out that he never said that he couldn't marry her again, and that taking Aunt May's life would be a violation of their deal since there was no restriction in place beforehand. Mephisto leaves, Peter gets married again, Aunt May loves, and the deal is essentially rendered null and void.

It depends on the writer and common sense. In literally less than 12 hours, he encountered a deranged clone of himself, found out MJ was missing, met a clone of Gwen, found out his long dead father is actually alive (though is later revealed to be a clone aged up), was attacked by SHIELD for doing literally nothing wrong, and came across a female clone of himself. All of this was before the one panel of him yelling about how he's shocked he hasn't gone comatose after all of this. And it literally gets worse from there

I feel like they could have done both of what Linkara suggested. The writers could have had Aunt May shot and killed, leaving Peter guilt ridden for her death so he goes to Tony Stark, who would only help him if he turned himself in for being a part of the anti-reg movement and therefore a criminal. Spider-man agrees to do so, and is sent to the vault (or the raft, or the negative zone, wherever they're send them these days). While he is in the vault, Mary Jane is then shot down and killed by an assassin taking advantage of Peter's absence. Distraught (I hope I'm using that word correctly), Spider-man brakes out of prison and tries to find a way to bring her back to life and the. Finds Mephisto who decides to bring back Mary Jane and undo the reveal of his secret identity for the destruction of their marriage. BOOM! Done

Atlas was a mythologicsl hero who was forced to hold up the sky (not just Earth). I have not read Atlas Shrugged(yet), but the symoblism of Atlas shrugging might imply he can no longer cope with the task. Indeed, since Peter, in the alternate, non-Spidey universe is not a hero, it could be pointing towards what the little girl said about not being selfish, as well as Linkara's point - if he really didn't want his life as Spiderman to hurt his loved ones, he'd give up that life. In my opinion.

Like 70% of Spider-Man's problems writing wise, it all comes down to trying to keep Peter 17, whether it be physically or mentally. With the amount of time that has gone by, Peter probably would have, or at least made more of an effort, to move past the deaths of his loved ones, but since the writers don't want Peter to reach that point because it would "ruin the character" and seemingly age him (in their minds) Peter may never reach that point. Hell, Batman is probably lucky that he was an adult in his original comics and in most spin offs. Had he not been, there is a chance he'd be in the same situation...

To be honest I think this idea could've worked, it COULD'VE worked. Peter making a deal with the devil to save aunt may does sound like an interesting idea (atleast to me anyway.) The reason this all goes to hell is because the writers abused the idea to retcon like half of spiderman's history. Had they done something like the deal be giving up his spider powers and retconing him revealing his secret identity. He would then have to decide whether to save his aunt and live with the knowledge that he can't protect new york anymore or kill his aunt and protect the rest of the world. (Ending with him obviously choosing Spider powers in the end and becoming more mature because of it.) Had it been written properly (and given less bullshit reasons as to why he had to go to the devil in the first place) I think that would have been a good story arc. That's just me though, anyone else agree?

Yeah, I think that's what really bothers Linkara, not that Peter's marriage was undone, but that nearly every chance the writers had to make this a good story was completely botched. And Linkara isn't the only fan who walked away after 'One More Day', as shortly after this comic finished, sales for Spider-Man dropped to their lowest since his creation in the 60s, and don't look to be improving any time soon. Way to go, Joe Quesada.

I honestly think it's about time she was written out of Spider-Man all together so I agree.

Wow, this story truly is abysmal. I disagree with you though that you'd prefer it if Marvel tried to fix the problems in it without just removing it from the timeline. This trash should just be erased from ever having happened. Even if it was rectified in some way it would still be a stain on the Spiderman canon.

One More Day seems to be symptomatic of a problem in comics that has existed nearly from the beginning--either locking the character into a certain status quo or returning them to one. K-Metal from Krypton which in 1940 had Kryptonite and Lois finding out Superman was Clark Kent was axed and the ideas seen in it would not reappear until years later. Another issue One More Day seems to be symptomatic is the lack of of any actual committed relationships in comics. Superman and Lois Lane's marriage? Retconned out of existence...twice. All the happily married JSA members? Also retconned into oblivion. The only character that I can think of who is still married is Mr Fantastic and there are times you forget that he is even married to Sue.

The Richards along with Aquaman and Mera plus Animal Man and his wife.

kory stephens I forgot about Aquaman and Animal Man but it kind of proves my point. IIRC Aquaman is "separated" from Mera and Animal Man's wife (and kid) were killed off and then brought back after the book went down the rabbit hole via the Twilight Zone which for all practical purposes it remained in even after the New-52 reboot. So the only other examples you can find of married characters is one who might as well not be married and the other whose entire book can best be described as one drug induced trip after the next.

Then there's Aunt May and J Jonah Jameson Sr. but that doesn't count since neither one's supposed to be alive

So I guess the pitch on Superhero comics is " Heroes don't get married, if they do, their family and marriage will be killed and destroyed by out of character villians, contrived storytelling, and disregard of continuity. Don't like it, well buy our crap anyway."

Linkara: I wonder if Marvel ever did a What if of Spiderman swinging into the bird and crushing it against a building." Oh that line was just beautiful. If they can do a What If of Jubilee killing Sabertooth, then I can see that happening.

at 26.40, i'm surprised he didn't mention that hank mccoy (beast) is the leading biologist in the marvel universe and that the x-men have angel, who ok his power relies on having the same blood type and elixir, who is a fucking omega level mutant healer who can completely control a persons biology. but nope. a bullet can stop one of the top ten smartest men on earth (the foremost expert in biology in the world) and 2 mutants who's powers are literally 'heal anything'

This is where that old comic book rule of 'only magic can heal magic, not moral wounds' bullshit just plays itself out to how fucking stupid a concept that is. So if a character is burned by a supervillaina fire magic can heal them, but if a flame throwing does the same magic can't do shit? Yeah I call utter bullshit on this. This is where I feel so removed from these stories, instead of being drawn into them. Super heroes can do amazing things like save the world, turn back time, stop god like beings from absorbing the universe.. but you have a character dying from a very realistic condition like cancer or a bullet wound, and suddenly all these powers can't do shit for them? This is like the difference between telling a child about santa clause and his magic siege and reindeer and how he gives presents all over the world, and the reality of how its the parents who do it, and not all children around the world get presents because they have no parents or they do but they are broke and can't afford nice things for kids. This is where I hate modern comic writers, they write stories that are so far into the real world, there is nothing to remove us from the shit we want to escape into.

Plus, if Spidey was willing to ask the help of Doctor Doom and DOC OCK, why didn't he ask the Jackal for help? Just ask him to clone Aunt May (since he can create clones that even share the same memories).
