I think Jugalbandi is a better book. This is more of a paint job to portray Modi as Anti Vajpayeeism. I was really looking forward to reading the book, but this interview “intervened” and preempted my intentions to buy the book and read it. From the perspective of the interview, I was confused if the writer has underlying issues with someone being a teetotaler, vegetarian and not being sub-servient to Pandit Nehru’s vision and so their frustrations had to be channeled through a book…? So in the end is this the book about Vajpayee ji or is it “Pandit Nehru ki Kahani Vajpayee ki zubaani…..? It is the big problem with most political commentators. They impose their opinions rather than providing the viewers and readers with the unbiased, unfiltered facts and information. They, in their high headedness probably think rest of the Indians and Indian diaspora included, are dumb ignoramuses, afflicted with a severe memory lapse, and who are totally incapable of reading, comprehension and reflection. If the book is anything like the interview, I suspect it is more of a thesis in criticizing the present political dispensation in power in India rather than an homage to one of the towering personalities of Indian political landscape who too in the end also proved that he was one of the shrewdest politicians. One should not gloss over the fact that Vajpayee ji had more than a fair share of glaring failures on his report card, that too on national security front that unfortunately took place under his watch. To name a few - Kargil war, Parliament attack, Akshardham temple attack, and grandiose of all failures the handling of IC 814 hijacking. Economy was something he could not have claimed any substantial credit for, because it was all due to the decisions taken and events set in motion by another forgotten PM Sh. PV Narshimha Rao who of course was only able to set India on the path of economic liberalization due to the tacit support of the BJP. Vajpayee ji's own attempt at "India Shining" claim backfired all too spectacularly. Above all despite all the graciousness that is attributed to Vajpayee ji, he never publicly expressed any gratitude to the man who was instrumental in paving his path to the post of prime-ministership. One more thing “Sai” in Sindhi language certainly does not mean brother at all! I guess for someone who is claiming that to be the case, so authoritatively, probably does not believe in doing their homework!. That being said, one should give credit where it is due, it was for the first time that an alternate dispensation completed the full term on its own and that paved the way for successive stable governments thereafter. Also, no amount of critique will take away from the greatness and qualities of the statesman - Vajpayee ji. All that is needed is a writer with an ability to focus on the virtues and fallibilities the subject - Vajpayee ji alone, without overshadowing the person by non-pertinent causalities. Last but not the least kudos to Saurabh Dwivedi for an open and fair forum like The Lallantop and interesting portals like Kitabwalla. You do give your best to set the high bar for journalistic integrity. More so, many thanks to you for introducing your subscribers to quality literature on diverse subjects and showcasing many writers whose works would otherwise probably go unnoticed. Many of your peers in journalism have a lot to learn from you!

Saurabhji, You are a very good interviewer all times. In this interview you were intervening quite frequently and it was difficult to get the gist of the responses. You know very well about different types of people you interview - but I feel that this particular interviewee will not allow other people to speak (being established press professional) and so you could have slowed down your interjections quite a bit.

It's a compulsion for few ppl to glorify Vajpayee and diminish Modi. The main problem is, few ppl like to keep status quo, which will help to continue pseudo secularism, liberalism and intellectuals. It's an attempt to isolate vajpayee from BJP just like BJP did to Sardar Patel...

I do not wish to buy her book because it is apparent from the interview that she has presented Vajpayee ji in a manner that suits her political biases.
