In this episode of Kitabwala, Saurabh Dwivedi discusses the story of women politicians. This is based on the book, "She, The Leader: Women in Indian Politics". Author of the book
Nidhi Sharma shared the anecdotes of women politicians like Sushma Swaraj, Smriti Irani, Maneka Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Pratibha Patil and others.
Politics is still considered an unusual career choice for Indian women. This is perhaps why there are just eighty-one women members of parliament in the seventeenth Lok Sabha (2019-24), constituting only 15 per cent of the strength of the Lok Sabha today.
In She, the Leader: Women in Indian Politics, Nidhi Sharma profiles seventeen trailblazing women politicians who have fought social inequalities and patriarchal attitudes and created their own brand of politics in the national discourse.
Divided into four parts, the book begins with ‘The Pioneers’, which focuses on two exemplary women leaders of the twentieth century and their distinctly different political paths-Indira Gandhi, India’s first and only woman prime minister, and Sucheta Kriplani, India’s first woman chief minister. The second part, ‘The Inheritors’, reflects on the achievements of the women leaders who inherited their political careers from a male member of the family or a political benefactor, namely Sonia Gandhi, J. Jayalalithaa, Vasundhara Raje, Sheila Dikshit, and Mayawati. This is followed by ‘The Lone Warriors’, featuring Pratibha Patil, Sushma Swaraj, Mamata Banerjee, Brinda Karat, and Ambika Soni-women who, though they had no political background, chose politics as their vocation and charted their own course. ‘The Future Leaders’, the final section, profiles up-and-coming women leaders to watch out for: Smriti Z. Irani, Supriya Sule, Kavitha Kalvakuntla, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, and Ampareen Lyngdoh. Almost all of these leaders have fought and won elections, nurtured constituencies, and created their own unique political legacy.
Taken together, the profiles in She, the Leader show us the immense contribution women politicians have made to the Indian political scene.

It is a great interview. One of the Finest detailed one lasting over an hour about many women Leaders which not many of us knew... I heard it now. Congratulations LT for doing this. Authoress and the anchor both did a nice job. The bio book looked like very timely. How little we know about our political class - be it males or females. Was former Gujarat CM and presently Governor UP, Anandiben Patel inadvertently missed from the coverage, discussion? Or I missed it? Not a big issue. I also liked the relaxed, serene conducting of the dialogue.

@lallantop , निधीजी यह किताब हिंदी भाषा मे भी होणा चाहिये. क्यू कि येह ग्रामीण भारत भी पढ सके , वरणा यह किताब सिर्फ सीमित लोगो तक ही जा के रुक जायेगी जो की नही होणा चाहिये. इस किताब से कई ग्रामीण महिला आगे आने मी प्रोत्साहित होगी. और ये हमारा हक्क है , आशा है की आप भारत को इस किताब से वंचित नही रखेगी.

Saurav keeps interrupting his guests to show off additional knowledge and acts phony, like when she was trying to explain glass cliff he interrupts her with unnecessary trivia which often derails the thought process. Thankfully the speaker is balanced to pick it up from that aberration but this is very annoying and he comes out as trying hard but gets exposed as artsy character.

सौरभ साहब, आप सशतकार तो बहुत ही अच्छा लेते है पर बीच में इतना जोर से बोलते है की सामने वाले की आवाज उसमे दब जाते है। सिर्फ पुष्पेश पंत साहब के साथ यह दिक्कत मेहसूस नही हुई क्यों की को उस बोलते होले रुक जाते थे। मेरी यह बिनती है की आप जब भी बीच के बोलने वाले हो तब सामने वाले के रुकने का इंतजार करे।
