AtGames Legends BitPixel HV + PC running Pinball FX3 - a REAL DMD

Күн бұрынIn today's video, we'll connect the BitPixel HV for the Legends Pinball to a PC and use it as a full DMD in Pinball FX3. That is, you can install the Pixelcade PinDMD software on the PC which will direct the DMD imagery to the BitPixel HV. This is a pretty cool option for the Legends Pinball. Thanks for this... I have been behind on video watching but this was exactly how I envisioned the custom backbox I will be making with my recently received BitPixel HV mounted INTERNALLY as a custom Marquee/ DMD. Atgames needs to also work at incorporating this EXACT idea for use with the own Tables. It would be one way of adding value to the single video output Core Max or Connect boards if they can have a BitPixel function as a DMD with their own tables.

Very welcome, glad it was helpful to you Phil! Agree, I expressed the same recommendation to AtGames that they need this incorporated into their tables. A topper is cool, but this would be so much better. They did tell me, it's coming down the road (think those were the exact words).

@@WagnersTechTalk Lets hope so!.. They are squandering their client base by letting them get enticed over to other platforms, instead of improving upon what they already have. And I have said this until I am blue in the face to no avail, but they simply have to get completely away from that EDP interface for the Main Display.. (another issue that pushes their ALP buyers to move on to bigger things outside of their ecosystem). They should at least convert it to simple LVDS like their other cabinets and they could then move up to the 18.6" display as on the ALU/Tetris Mini. That way, people would at least have a relatively easy upgrade path on their own if they wanted to go to a 22", 24" or 27" display (They could just use a readily availble LVDS to HDMI adapter).

Very welcome, the software dmd will also continue to work if you want both. In this video, I disabled it (that's why it was blank on the backglass). The artwork I used for the backglass was designed with an area for the virtual DMD. Just need to go hunting for artwork that doesn't have the black box. Easy enough.

As always seriously great insightful info here 😃🤘 Quick possibly silly question….for my ALP I currently have it set up to run with my laptop with an USB cord plugged into one of the ports, and the other USB port occupied with the FlashDriveX memory card with all of my tables saved to it….so was wondering how you currently have your set up USB port wise to also connect the BitPixel to the ALP? I saw a sight of a multi USB port on your video I think, but I was having my main USB cord plugged inside my ALP and then direct into my laptop. Thanks :)

However, I'll probably get a powered USB hub at some point and plug that into the 3.0 port along with the HV & thumbdrive.

Great stuff as always :) Thx for the info, and apologies for forgetting that I’m currently using my USB 3.0 port for connecting to my laptop for the Rachel Backglass Set Up and then the other one with my current Flash Drive full of tables. So guessing I’ll have to get a powered USB hub to power both (ie in order to have another open USB port for me to plug the HV into? Thx again!

Great tutorials, as always. With this it completes the three items I got from the summer sale, and I'm just about 100% up and running on everything, thanks to your videos (Pdubs too). Can you help with a couple of queries though? 1. Do you have to switch the USB cable from the ALP to your PC when switching between playing PC pinball games and the Gotlieb tables on the ALP? I have the powered USB port and originally just had it in one of the USB ports on the ALP so I can keep the thumb drive in and I assumed this would work for pixelcade as well. It works for the local games on the ALP, but of course, it does not for the PC games. If the USB hub is plugged into the ALP then pixelcade's install does not recognize a port. So I plugged pixelcade to the back of the PC to get it working and Pixelcade then recognizes a port; FX3 runs well with the pixelcade. I guess you just have to swap the USB plug between games? 2. Also is there a way to make Pixelcade start up when I turn on Pinball FX3 instead of having to turn on Pixelcade first? 3. Lastly, how about the Zaccaria tables I purchased on Steam. Is there a way to make those work with the Pixelcade? Not sure those table utilize a DMD at all, but just checking! Thanks a million :)

Thank you kindly! I'll try to answer your questions as best I can. #1 I haven't found a good switch (yet) to switch between the ALP and the PC. I also tried a hub and a switch and didn't have any luck with it. However, I do have a new device coming that may alleviate some of that frustration. I've obviously not tested it yet, but might have a solution in a month or so. #2. You should be able to do something like this (taken from the alppcsetup guide): You may also want Pixelcade to start automatically when Windows Starts. To do this, press the Windows Key+R, then type shell:startup, place the Pixelcade shortcut in the Startup folder. #3. I have honestly not tried to setup the Zaccaria tables from Steam on the ALP at this point. It was something I thought about doing, but noone had asked until now. I hope some of the above is (or will) be helpful to you!

@@WagnersTechTalk yeah great help knowing you’ve run into the same issues and are tracking them. Sometimes it’s a relief just to know you’re not the only one dealing with it. I actually have been using shell:startup and I’m pretty satisfied with that as a solution, but wondered if you had the next best thing. Lastly, thanks for considering Zac tables on Steam; I bought them all during a sale, and I like that there are VR options with Steam. I’ve considered rebuying on ALP but maybe not…thanks for that quick response! YOU are the legend here!

Love the videos! Regarding the bitpixel hv, if there is only one usb input on the legends pinball, do you have to switch the physical cord back and forth between the pc and the pinball machine to use the functionality with the native games and fx3 on otg?

Thank you and GREAT question! Yes, for now you'd have to swap the USB cable between PC/ALP OTG port. However, I ordered a USB switcher, which won't arrive until later this week that I'll be testing out. If it works out well, I'll document exactly what I used here : wagnerstechtalk.com/alpfx3/#BitPixel_HV_with_FX3 . The idea is that you can mount it up under the cabinet (Velcro/double-sided tape) and easily switch between ALP/PC OTG rather than disconnect/reconnect.

Hello, first of all thanks for sharing this interesting video! I've just installed my Atgames Legends Ultimate Arcade machine, the pinball buttons and the BitPixel LED marquee. I would like to play pinball games on my ALU now. I understood that I have to install Pixelcade DMD first and connect the BitPixel LED marquee with my notebook. The problem is that my BitPixel LED marquee is already connected to the ALU according to your video guide. So what do I need to do? Do I need a USB switch or somerhing like that? Many thanks again for your support!

To use a PC over OTG, yes you would need either a USB Switch or an extender from inside to the outside of the cabinet. When switching from the internal single board computer to a PC, you'll also need to power cycle the ALU when swapping the connections. Thank you for watching!

So bitpixelHV works with Steam and VPX like in the video, but Built-in and ALP tables it just shows as a marquee? Also, Any way to mount it in front of the "Legends Pinball" logo? So the HV rests just over the Backglass display?

Hi Vernon, correct regarding the FX3/VPX and ALP observation. There is no ideal way to mount it over the Legends Pinball logo. I've been asked that quite a few times and it does mount above the Legends Pinball logo. I added all the Q&A that I've been able to find out here: wagnerstechtalk.com/alp/#Bitpixel_HV_Q_A (there may be some others there that are helpful). One thing that I personally did is put two sheets of 8.5"x11" paper over the Legends Pinball logo in the backglass. This dimmed the light effect down considerably.

Hi Jon, this is an awesome video and product but as others have said, just a bit too high for thr player. Would it be possible to do a video on installing a DMD between the speakers?

Thank you, I appreciate you watching! The difficulty in showing a DMD between the speakers is: 1) The HV works over USB and consists of it's own service that displays the image. That would mean, whatever solution is used for the DMD would need code to be able to interpret the stream of images to render them properly. I'm not aware of any such applications that will work with the ALP HD in this way. 2) Due to the size of this panel, it obviously won't sit between the two speakers. Therefore, some other device would be needed like a small HDMI input panel or tablet. 3) If a solution for #2 can be determined, the AtGames tables wouldn't work with the DMD unless #1 was also available. However, if #2 were added it would be possible to use it exclusively with VPX/Pinball FX/FX3 and Future Pinball if showing the DMD from the AtGames tables can be overlooked. Then, there are other things to consider, such as how to mount it between the speakers. The display would need to be very thin and

Hi Jon, I hadn't actually considered using it with the built in games, only really FX3 etc. I would love the ALP 4K but I am in the UK, so will both be overpriced and not available for a long time :-(

So Jon with it being NOD for atgames it made me wonder if I could simply buy a Bitpixel Marquee and just use it on my non atgames multicade running hyperspin or coinops jwith a PC as a dynamic marquee? Would the original bitpixel marquee work for that function or would this one be different? I do have the atgames pinball and currently have the atgames 1.0 legends machine with the original bitpixel marquee running coinops. Is the only difference between the one your showing in this vid the size and the brackets? Is the original bitpixes I have on my atgames legends function the exact same way? If so I would rather buy another of the one I have since it is bigger. Any help on this is appreciated.

You don't even need a PC, this is something I'm going to look into for a future video. I just found out this information after releasing the video and haven't tested it but I have no reason to believe it's not going to work. Check out pixelcade.org/batocera for information on using Batocera (there is also info. on RetroPie). From what I understand, you can use the BitPixel (you own) with either of those distributions (not Recalbox, I don't think) using a $50-70 single-board computer. If not familiar with the Pi4 and Retro Gaming, this guide should give you an idea of what it can do: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi4gaming . I've built full-size arcade cabinets using Pi 3b+ (less powerful than the Pi4). Hope this helps!

From what I understand, both the original BitPixel and the HV utilize the same underlying technologies. So, you can use either or. May want to verify that statement with the folks at pixelcade.org , but that is my understanding. Sorry, glossed over that part of your question.

I just did not know if the atgames bitpixel was in any way a scaled back version of the one on the pixelcade site. For this price for NOD it seemed like a great option but did not want to buy one from atgames to find out it did not work that way and was exclusive to working on the atgames machine.

Does it matter which usb port this plugs into on the ALP? I use the far right usb port for actual control of the buttons

Yes, you'll want to use the USB 2.0 port for the OTG connection from the ALP to the PC. However, for the BitPixel, it connects to the PC in this video.

Hello. When I attempt to install the Pixelcade Pinball Display and get to the Device Manager screen, I do not have the PORTS option listed. Everything else is listed except for PORTS. Any ideas on how to get the COM port number needed to proceed in the setup process?

For this to work on the PC, it will need to assign a COM port. Try a different USB port or if you have a powered USB hub, try that. For some reason, your PC isn't picking it up from what I understand.

How can you use the BitPixel AND keep the DMD on your third screen (I have a 10" tablet connected i've been using for my DMD and want to continue to use it)? Also, I see you have to have DMDext running for FX3 but I use Popper (VPX, FP tables also with FX3 through the Popper interface): and running into the same issue - no DMD on my tablet screen (and not sure IF I have to shut down Popper to shut off DMDEXt in order to use bitpixel for the VPX, FP tables etc)...

@@WagnersTechTalk I got it working - but no way, that I've found, to go from FX3 to VPX etc in Popper and keep it working. it's either FX3 or VPX/FP/MAME tables/games in Popper.

Can you have the virtual dmd and the bitbixel dmd as well? For instance I have a 3 screen setup but thinks it would be cool to have the bitpixel setup as well with the dmd on it. That way other people can see the scores even if they are not playing the table.

Yes you can, have both virtual and HV DMD's running at the same time.

How did you get the dots to appear yellow/orange-ish? Mine is working great but it's all shades of pink/red on the BitPixel.

Im new to v pin an have an ALP with vibs kit. An just ordered this PC for it Beelink Mini PC SEi10, 10th Gen Intel Core i5-1035G1 Turbo 3.60 GHz, 16GB RAM, 500GB ROM M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, UHD Graphics 4K 60Hz, Triple Display, WiFi 6, BT5.2 is it ok for this? Thank you

From my link, see the Grey box. Link there has a tool to plug in the specs and see the expected performance. From that, you can decide. Hope that helps

looks great, but it's just placed too high and leaves fx3 with an empty spot on the backglass where dmd should be (pinup popper would solve that).

The backglass images can be replaced, I just haven't gone looking for some replacement artwork yet. 👍😎

I agree I would like to use it as a second dmd so others can see the score but for the person actually playing I would want the dmd still in its original place.

I’m getting this error when launching pincade-pinballfx3.exe Error: Failed attempt to launch program or document: Action: Params: Specifically: The application has failed to start because configuration is incorrect. Please see … Line# - - -> 052: Run, dmdext.exe mirror - - source=pinballfx3 - - no-virtual - - use-ini=DmdDevice.ini,, Min The current thread will exit. I followed your instructions to a T. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try installing it to C:\vPinball\VisualPinball\VPinMAME . Apparently someone else was having the same issue here: pixelcade.org/forum/help-and-support/pinball-fx3-running-with-pixalcade-locally-instead-of-steam-on-alu-at-games-legend-ultimate/ Let me know if that resolves the issue for you please.
