Athelhampton House in Dorset is one of England's finest Tudor manor houses. Built just after the Wars of the Roses by Sir William Martyn and extended during the reign of Elizabeth I by Sir Nicholas Martyn, who incorporated a priest hole to ensure Catholic priests could hide at the house during England's period of religious upheaval as the family were staunch Catholics. The property has superb late medieval and Tudor architectural features, as well as being fully solar powered thanks to its current owner, Giles Keating. Athelhampton was a favourite spot of the novelist Thomas Hardy, who wrote numerous novels and poems inspired by the house.
