I grew up in England and miss the fabulous history. I live in America now and while we have history, it doesn't capture my attention and imagination like the castles of Great Britian. Thank you for your videos.

On one hand... the U.S.A. has preserved so much British Art, Silverware, Cars, Trikents, and even Bridges. But why did we have buy/stole so much from the British?

It'd cost millions to restore it. And it's had no roof since 1919, so over 100 years of being exposed to the elements. But some of its interiors still survive and that's pretty cool :)

When I was 11(1960) I did a project on Samlesbury Hall as someone had reported seeing a ghost outside the hall. The local press took on the story and found it incorrect.Hence my project was very short.

Middleham was in the Honour of Richmond. The first lord of Middleham was Ribald, a half-brother of Alan Rufus. The later Nevilles obtained it and their surname by marriage to Isabelle Neville, heiress to Middleham. So, the Wars of the Roses came down to a confrontation between Richard III, from Middleham in the Honour of Richmond, and Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond.

We've also heard that story. The current torture chamber was originally a storage area for the castle, with the original apparently underneath what's now the castle's café

There was no "vow of silence" among Cistercians or Benedictines - but silence was considered a virtue in the Rule of St Benedict. Speaking was permitted during work periods, but no frivolous or unnecessary chatter was allowed; silence was certainly enforced during meals and after Compline (when preparing for bed). The cloister would be fairly noisy when monks were reading to themselves, since it was normal to read out loud (see Julie Kerr: Life in the Medieval Cloister). Monks took four vows: poverty, chastity, obedience and stability - meaning that they would remain in the monastery for life. The Rule of St Benedict is the best starting point for studying monks and monasteries.

The wholesale destruction of the monastic houses, abbeys and convents during the Dissolution was one of the most egregious instances of destroying the cultural heritage of a country anywhere in history. The masons and artisans who over the centuries had put their very best work into these beautiful buildings were basically given the middle finger by Henry VIII and his henchmen. Henry VIII has so many horrible things he did or caused to be done in his name. He was a monster.
