Fun fact: Rice Krinkles were the predecessor to both Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles. It was a cereal made of puffed rice like Kellogg’s Rice Krispies, but unlike the latter, Rice Krinkles were coated with a light, sweet and sticky coating (mostly made from corn syrup, sugar, honey, and artificial flavors) so you didn’t have to add sugar or fruit to the cereal to add flavor. They were discontinued in 1969 because they did not sell very well in stores, and Post changed the Krinkles to Pebbles because the pieces of rice looked like tiny stones, and The Flintstones (which has a character named Pebbles) was one of the most popular shows at the time among both kids and adults. It is much easier to slap a preexisting cartoon character like Fred Flintstone on your product than try and create a new mascot to attract a new audience of consumers. Rice Krinkles actually had two primary mascots in its run. There was the notorious Krinkles the Clown, but before him, the mascot of Rice Krinkles was So-Hi, who was a pretty racist cartoon depiction of a Chinese man with slanted eyes and a high-pitched voice with a fake Asian accent. Creepy clowns are better cereal mascots than racist caricatures.
