You have changed my game so much I had a hip surgery on July 23rd 2021 so I was watching a lot of videos I stumbled across your video and since I got back to golfing the fellas don't understand why I'm hitting my three wood further than their driver and I'm always hitting the ball straight landing on the greens with ease my swing has always been smooth but I knew something was going wrong. Because I would feel I wouldn't have control of the golf club all the time and I will hit the ball straight left or to the right club was turning in my hand and I was also holding it like a baby bird cuz that's what all the golf players that I play with told me to do. so I went back to square one I looked up how to grip a golf club your video has helped me 100% has taken about seven strokes off my scorecard thank you.. One love..

You described my left hand perfectly, I've seen that extra bit of club movement at the top of my backswing in video and I'm always wearing out the left hand pad of my gloves. I'm working on improving my grip but I still have some play in the butt of the club. Is some slight play alright or should I be working to remove all play? If so do you have some other tips to get a more secure grip?

Great video Mike, Shaun. After a recent GEARS lesson (inspired by yourselves) here in the UK which highlighted how I moved and I was thinking about when Shaun has talked about the 'Queen Bee' fault. I've recently been working on Grip Pressure and Maintaining the Same Grip Pressure from Start to Finish (or at least Feeling I do) and found that just doing this one thing better so many other things started to improve, and I've been cut 5 shots in recent months after winning 2 competitions at my club which felt Great. I'm now getting more into the detail of the Grip and recently watched an Aimee Cho video where she says Pro's (R/handed Golfer) grip it firmest in the L/hand with the 'pinky' finger and in the R/hand with the Index Finger and the Thumb, so do you find that this is what you do? Thanks

Hey guys, another great vid and probably the most important one of all. It should be the first and only lesson for a new student. "Come back and see me when it feels almost natural, as it is the "wax on - wax off" portion of the swing". I would just do it as a free intro lesson for them when they are getting scheduled for their actual lesson series. Then we can get right to work when they show up, and have a reasonably proper grip. About the bird in the hand thing...I have my own interpretation of it, tough I admit, I know how to do it right, but my right hand grip is the bain of my existence because I learned wrong and with slippery grips that were like plastic (dad's old blade 7 iron) and did it my entire childhood. Anyhow, I guarantee that with good grips, I can hold my club with just the pinky and ring finger of my left hand when the club is properly held in the fingers, and the both of you could drag me around the studio by the clubhead and not take it away. And, I can hold the club as tight as I want (with those two fingers) because they are controlled by the Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (think superficial). Those muscles terminate completely by the elbow. They will not affect any large muscles in the arm, shoulder, back, or anywhere else. As soon as you squeeze strongly with the middle, index and thumb, you engage the long muscles of the arm and that transmits to the bicep and beyond. You can literally hit balls one handed with just the two little fingers. This is what Hogan was trying to explain, and that is why he says "grip the club like you were holding a baby bird". You truly can, but I agree, a little more "feel" in the grip is helpful with the rest of your fingers, but not to the point you are locked up. Meanwhile, I still have to tape up a couple fingers on my right hand while I fight to eliminate my childhood death grip or I wear through the skin during practice. I'm almost there...and I just had my 57th birthday. :D

This was great, I wear out gloves in that exact spot, and I know I'm losing it at the top at times. Going to try the Rick / Butch drill. Do you think that the weak left, club moving toward lifeline causes a toe first looking divot? which I'm guessing is open face and causing fade. I guess I'd like to see an understanding divots video, that may help a lot of us.

What size grip do I need. I wear a Large glove. I tried a medium and it tore down my life line first day on range. My grips are Golf Pride CP2 wrap midsize. I can feel the end of club move a little in my swing. It seem like it is so large in diameter that I can really stop it from moving at that point. I use a 10 Finger grip. Overlap and interlock makes my right hand little finger hurt. I switch several years ago to the midsize grip thinking that the larger grip would make the club face easier to control. Doing the key drill and the golf tee. I don't loose either. Any advice would be appreciated. Shawn Did a video using a swimming pool floaty to control the right arm bend. I can't seem to find it again was it taken down? Thanks Paul

I have a very distinctive wear pattern on my glove. From the tip/pad of the thumb, down to between the two knuckles, the glove wears and eventually tears open. Every glove I have EVER owned has been thrown out due to this part of the glove tearing open, while the rest of the glove is in pretty good condition. Have you seen this before and does it indicate any grip/swing issues?

If I'm visualizing that correctly, it sounds like your right thumb pad is losing it's pressure on the left thumb during the swing then "re-gripping" on it later.

Hi. Shaun and Mike, This is very informative! i want to know what is ideal club face loft at setup regardless square or hook grip, is that nominal loft for setup?if not what nominal loft means. i know ideal at impact is less about 30% of nominal loft. might be wierd question but no one talks about.
@AthleticMotionGolf

We prefer to have the grip of the club pointing somewhere near the zipper or belt buckle. With good ball position, that'll have a very neutral loft at setup. Not a fan of de-lofting at setup.

Really good vid, gives an excellent, systematic, approach to a good grip. One question: sounds like you guys like closing the thumb up to the forefinger, on both hands. I went away from this, on the right hand especially, as I found it was easy to inadvertently introduce some tension into the forearm via the thumb (or, worst case, even end up pinching the club between right thumb and ff). What do you see as the advantages? Is it because it can increase a little the pressure with the heel pad and thus make the grip more secure here? Or to allow the club to be cradled on right thumb and ff at the top? Or something else? Thanks again for such great insights in your vids.
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it helps to keep the pressure on the thumb to make the grip more secure. That's not something we recommend for the lead hand because it would only really be possible with a REALY "short" thumb grip.

I find myself resetting my grip to neutral or slightly strong after watching grip videos like yours here... however, transferring that grip to the range or course is tough, as my underlying swing faults are suddenly exposed by the correct grip. What are your thoughts on working that transition? What sort of things should I be looking for in my ball flight to diagnose the swing faults? If I push right then... If I pull left then... Gentlemen, I noticed that my hands are really turned a lot to the right and I am thinking of moving to a more conventional grip. What are dangers of an overly strong grip? I am guessing maybe the height of shots( right now my clubhead speed is average for a 53 yr old man) the club also looks overly closed at club parallel and sometimes is pretty shut at the top. Also, at the back line in the downswing the face looks overly shut. I know the storm grip is much preferred over a weak grip for amateurs, but I think I have gone to far the other way.

I saw a video with Mark Crossfield, where he said that the lead wrist cock is very little, with a good pivot and proper arm rotation there is really no need to think about cocking the lead wrist. With the way you guys demonstrate gripping the club behind and beside your lead side, it looks like this puts most of the lead wrist cock in at address.
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 5 жыл бұрын
There's about +/- 25º of lead wrist cock in the backswing from address to the top. But keep in mind the lead wrist should start down cocked, so about 20º of that is going from down cocked to neutral. You don't want to start with the wrist pre-cocked.
@richardjohnson-tb5pz
@richardjohnson-tb5pz 5 жыл бұрын
@@AthleticMotionGolf Thanks for your reply. I know you guys are busy trying to make a living so please ignore me if I am off point. What I am trying to say is that if we get to the famous "L" position somewhere in the backswing I always thought that meant about 90 degrees of lead wrist cock, but if we only add around 25 degrees in the backswing then I guess what I am trying to say is that we must be getting 65 degrees of the 90 degrees with the dish angle at set up.
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 5 жыл бұрын
@@richardjohnson-tb5pz I gotcha now Richard... that angle typically starts around 130º at setup, then pitches up to that classic 90º you're referring to. So it gets cocked about 35-40º from address to the top. There isn't any cocking of the wrist at setup, just the opposite, there's down cocking or ulnar deviation. From there to the top, every golfer adds wrist cock... a good bit to get that 90º angle you mentioned.

Great video. The only suggestion I would make is that you could have explained better what "make a thumbprint" means. I thought at first you meant to press hard, but then I surmised you meant contacting the club shaft with the pad of the thumb like you would when making a thumbprint, versus extending the thumb flat along the shaft. Some of us lack experience with the justice system, hahaha.
@gregnieman7217

Some good information, but most videos, this included don't ever show what the grip looks like from the golfer's perspective. It's always from the front, so for instance when someone says, two knuckles showing you can kind of envision it, but you never really see it. I guess because that's going to be more difficult to capture on video. But OTOH, if the video doesn't clearly illustrate it, why watch it, why upvote it, why subscribe? Why click on the distance video link? Just sayin'... Agree with other comments that there is way too much initial focus on the "wrong" things. IMO this is counterproductive unless you've already got to the point where you're trying to do it the right way. Fully understand that those involved are knowledgeable and may do fine with in person lessons. Tee drills look useful. I just don't think it was well thought out, and has that, "Just set up the camera and I'll talk about X," kind of feeling to it.
