In this video, Mike Granato and Shaun Webb of Athletic Motion Gof address the common misconception of trying to take timing out of your golf swing. Great players understand the importance of timing and know that you can't take it out of the swing without making it worse. The guys show you exactly what timing is in the golf swing and how to train it so you can have perfect timing and speed in your golf swing.
They discuss what happens at the start of the backswing, going into the top of the backswing, and, most importantly, what happens in the downswing. Timing in the golf swing is when things happen in the swing, and you can relate this to other sports. Just like shooting a basketball free throw, the timing and sequence of movements are crucial.
Mike and Shaun explain the early part of the backswing and the specific speed that professionals have, which amateurs often lack. We'll also show you how to control and swing the mass of the club to your benefit and avoid bouncing off the shoulders, which is a common mistake.
Lastly, they examine the swings of recent tour winners and show you the similar things they do with regard to timing and speed in their swings, despite their different swing looks.
If you want to improve your golf swing, you need to understand and train your timing and speed. Watch this video to learn more!

***Alright, I have been meaning to comment on one of your videos and here it is. You guys have changed the way I see golf and I have never been better than I am now. I am a victim of going down rabbit holes for years, changing my swing on the course after a bad shot, practicing for hours on the wrong things and grinding and not seeing results. The day I committed to ONLY watch instructional videos from you guys I saw immediate results. That was a month ago and my HC has dropped to single digits and will continue to drop. Just wanted to give a shout out to you guys for all the work you put in, the live lessons you upload and the way you break down the swing. I bought 4 tee shirts as a thank you for instruction and look forward to seeing your upcoming videos. No more rabbit holes, no more conflicting information and no more questioning my swing every time I hit a bad shot on the course! Having the ability to “swing athletically” has changed my game. 🙏🏻🙌🏻😄. P.s if there is ever a time when you guys slow down and offer 2 hour lessons I will be flying from Cali to Florida/GA!

Great video guys. Have never seen this information presented in this way before. In a lesson last year, a pro who is a friend of mine told me I needed to increase the speed of my backswing. I understood what he said but implementing it into the whole swing wasn’t easy. The way you integrated the downswing sequence and speed with the backswing was an “aha” moment for me. The step drill you mentioned really helps to increase the backswing speed. Dr. Kwon’s training video’s are excellent for this. Thanks for all the great material!!

I also was able to get .11 a couple times, however .13-.15 was far more common over 20 attempts. It aptly puts into perspective how fast the downswing happens, especially the last part of the sequence. I have a tendency to get fast which as you described has unpredictable results because of the chaotic transition. Thank you for putting together this instruction on pro timing, why it's important, and how different timing errors affect impact.

If i lived nearby, i'd really consider booking lessons with you - although i'm completely selftought (best was hdc 3) and actually never ever take lessons. But the big difference is your 3d motion capture, which truly tells how it is (no parallax etc in the way), your deep understanding of this technologie and your ability to teach how to convert desired numbers and angles into a swing"feel". Thx!

Wow, this is amazing. Thank you so much! I'm pretty sure I'm guilty of all 3 reasons why I don't have enough speed in my golf swing. Awareness is probably more than half the battle and now I know the why and what to focus on. I still want to make sure I'm getting to the right place half way down in the downswing with weight shift and re-centering correctly early in the transition and on plane but now I have a clear path of things to work on to add speed. This is huge!

My arms were breaking down because i was going back too slow, swaying, and the was trying to manually manipulate my wrist angles. Disastrous. More flinging the club up so wrists naturally set and made much better contact. The force of opposites also helped me transfer my weight forward earlier bc it was resisting the speed going back. Watching these videos and explanations has had me go from over the top and casting to a more respectable swing. Thanks fellas.

Thanks guys, this is such an important and often under emphasized topic. Like a lot of people with backgrounds in sports like baseball, basketball, tennis, racquet ball and especially fly fishing, had a golf instructor spent any meaningful time with me connecting golf timing to those other sports, my game would have started improving decades ago. it was not until a teacher eventually (as you guys described) told me to think of literally tossing the head of the club up in the back swing and letting it carry my arms did things start to click. In that moment, the feeling of acceleration, natural deceleration and then direction change with reacceleration became perfectly clear. This connected timing and direction change perfectly to things like casting a fly or hitting a tennis ball. As an ex-motorcycle racer, this video makes that even more clear. Thanks for your content!

This is great information. Never thought about the speed slowing down as it approaches the top of the backswing, and never thought about the downswing speeding up as it comes around that arc like a race car driver. Thanks for the info. Didn’t know the swing from start to impact was about 3/4 of a second, and had no idea that from waist high in the downswing it takes .08 seconds. Love the videos guys, the scientifically backed data on the golf swing is different level. In the takeaway you often talk about swinging the arms back and a lot of the drills you do for the takeaway involve swinging your arms in some way. But to reach the perfect position at the top of the backswing, you talk about it being a combination of a wrist hinge, raising the arms, and a rotation of all the major parts of the body. Im confused by how much "swing" there is in the golf swing, hope you can shed some light!

Great video guys! Question: Is this hand speed measurement from rotation (indirect speed of hands) in the backswing? Then from top (at 10 mins 15 secs of video) it stated when you pull on the club from the top, is that a weight shift/sitting into left side pull??? Or the Sergio Garcia analogy of pulling on a rope from the top, there again using hands to actively pull or does the mass of the body/arms create the pull?
@geoff376

Love this explanation. Very clear and chimes with the swing speed devotees too. The arm movement described from the top has virtually eliminated getting stuck with the driver for me. So does the body react to the armswing or does it move to allow the arms to swing?

Great video guys. Very helpful. One tip for you if you don’t mind me sharing. I bet if you look at your retention graphs on this video you’ll see a sharp downturn around 12:30 and beyond. This happens because the scene changes and the content ends and then it’s you making multiple asks (like, comment subscribe etc). It kind of feels like the video is over so people bounce. My suggestion is to have a followup video that makes a lot of sense to this one and then tell people why they should watch it. Don’t say goodbye or ask for subs. Just explain what they’re missing in that next video. It will help retention time and session time metrics. I’m off to the range to work on my swing speed now!

I understand the start of the backswing to be like a heave, where the purpose of initial speed is to give the club the momentum needed to coast to the top. I love the way you explained it. Thank you. Do you, in your way of thinking, define the downswing as the movement from the top of the backswing to the end of follow through? If so, then is it true that between the top of the backswing through to the end of the follow through, the fasted hand speed the pros reach is in that tiny window? If so, does that mean that even though the body continues to rotate through to the end of the follow through -- the hands continue to slow down at a consistent rate from the above fastest speed until they stop at the top of the follow through?? Thank you. I would love an answer on this. Seems like you are describing centrifugal force.

Useful as always. Will review before my next session in the PGA Super Store hitting bay. But here is a, let's say confusing factor. If you have trouble as I do at 82 this June in getting your weight on to the left side, turning the hips toward the target and getting the right knee up alongside the left knee and the right foot up on the toe, and as a result find your arms and hands getting ahead of the hips and releasing too early, it can make me try to hold the arm swing back and keep the wrists cocked. That conflicts with the correct timing you show where once the hands are back down part way you don't think or try anything and simply allow the weight and momentum of the club head to come through at max speed. Even if you may try to not release early, you can still find yourself doing it if your swing is videoed. What do you suggest?

3:07 they're talking about how golf is about feeling the weight of the clubhead and being athletic... and the combination of him whipping the club around like that, with someone within club's length and kind of tossing the weight right at the guy's head... yet they both are completely confident in the absolute safety of what's happening... because they both know how much sensitivity they have to the speed and momentum of the clubhead!

While, as usual, you guys really talk sense and have lots of practical advice and solid, informed ideas. However...it IS possible to have multiple swing thoughts, even downswing thoughts. While it's correct that we don't have time in the downswing to consciously attend to three aspects of motion, we DO program our motions, in part, with thoughts. Thinking of multiple keys as you prepare for a shot can prime you and prepare you to make the correct motion. Just my opinion (as a physician and specialist in neuropathology).

Specifically the amount of radial or ulnar deviation that you guys see amongst elite players. I'd like to know what trends you guys see as a result of being near either end of the spectrum in terms of how it might affect wrist positions throughout the swing... How it might affect arm structure throughout the swing... and if you have it available, whether any particular ball flight tendencies resulted from starting at address closer to either end of that spectrum. It think it should be noted that the Max hand speed in the downswing versus impact plays a big part in how a shaft company like Fujikura fits golfers for shafts using their ENSO machine. It's been years since I've been on ENSO but I remember my max hand speed in the downswing was a hair faster than JB Holmes at the time, but the hand speed was much slower at impact compared to Holmes so it was no wonder he hits it much further than I do and needs a different shaft profile. Without that slowing down of the hand speed from peak to impact shaft fitting would be much easier and more uniform across the board.

I tried it 3 times. Got .11, .14, .07. This was an eye opener, I just realized that I have proper timing with my wedge shots from around 50 yards and that is probably it, but that is also my best shot and that makes sense now. I remember watching a series from Jack Nicklaus called like golf my way or something and he was saying something about releasing from the top of the back swing and how you really can't do it early enough. I think he was saying you have to add speed in the transition immediately, pretty much as you have described here. My question is, are you trying to "hit the brakes" at around P5? How do you decelerate through impact or do I have that wrong? Thanks to this video I now have something to work on, subscribing for more!
@xarevok

Not sure if I missed it but what's mental process for starting decelarating in the backswing/downswing? Is it just removing all your effort and let inertia do its thing? Or do you put effort to actively decelerate your hands in either back or down swing to allow for the clubhead to accelerate/deccelerate faster? Thank you!

Just rewatching the video and reading all the comments. Seeing the reaction times people had was fun, but I'm not sure everyone got the overall message. There's no time to think while doing. I'll bet no one thought "press finger, press finger" while doing this. They all thought of what they were going to do before hand and then reacted. Someone even went as far as to think of a double finger method to accomplish the task. The point is, there's no time to think, so you'd better have a good concept of what you want to accomplish. Because right concept or wrong concept, your body will do it.

Scramble, best ball, alternate shot, shamble, etc. Would be interesting is to see some of the folks behind AMG that we don’t see in vids. Maybe some subscribers could play (sorry, shameless plug). Plus there are some amazing courses around the Atlanta area. Have to have shot tracer. I know that is a ton of work for a side gig. But who knows…

Great video! Thanks a lot! Could you show two or three slo-mo video of pros and show exactly the timing/max speed of the hands? Isn't it that you should start the first foot of the backswing slow??

Started golf late in life, good sportsman athlete, good athletic motion, got down to 5 hcp quite quickly.4yrs,thanks to AMs great videos! But how stupid am I,the 1 muscle group i used the most in other sports i switched off in golf! Inside Forearms.60/40 right going back 60/40 Left at impact Helps reach max hands peed early, try it,might be missing link! you used them naturally in tennis cricket baseball etc

0.08 third try! Besides Gears are there any other launch monitors that measure instantaneous hand and club head speed at various points of the down swing? Maybe you could show several pros' hand and club speeds at P5, P6, P7, P8. Also movement of the handle P6 to P7 would be interesting. Thanks for the great videos!

I would like to know what the club head speed is at these varius locations. The speed from address to left arm parallel can't be all that fast compared with the speed coming down. In the transition after the club has slowed down, is it a left hand pulling down that creates the speed and when it reaches max hand speed does the hand speed slow down into impact.and what about the follow through

So what are you trying to maximize, distance or accuracy? For distance, doesn't Berkshire, etc. swing back as fast as possible when in long drive competitions?

@athleticmotiongolf - do you have any videos that detail hand speed all the way through the downswing? I’m curious where the hands start to slow down in the downswing- do they accelerate all the way to the finish position? Do they stop accelerating and maintain the achieved speed? Do the hands slow down at the bottom? I’ve tried to find an AMG video on that - but I can’t seem to find one…

0.10 on iphone. Great advice here men - amateurs like myself tend to go slow slow slow and then grab at the top to try and find some speed. Getting the correct sequence is a must for all golfers.

Always like the 'data wins' perspective of AMG. Really interesting....apparently I can move quickly...0.05 repeatedly, got to 0.04...but the idea that you had to begin to decelerate linearly at about hip high on way down was a revelation (I agree with earlier comments that Kwon has clued us in the need for backswing decel). Would like to see the other great speed video (Rory split hand drill or yo-yo throw) that seems to indicate this move goes lower integrated with the downswing speed timing in this. I have been working to get hand speed out of the top for what now appears to be too long. Related, been spending more time on Scott Lynn (Swing Catalyst) vids. This AMG appears to connect with his vertical force vector (amplitude and direction) focus - up and back off the front foot REALLY early (Drew Cooper reference). Appreciate your perspective on the cause/effect intersection between these. Thanks guys.

Hi guys thanks for the video. I see how this is very applicable to a swing like Cameron Young who gets the club moving as you describe, quickly in the takeaway and slows down at the top. How would you explain the success around Hideki Matsuyama takeaway? I understand there are many ways to swing the club, just curious how he swings it so well doing the exact opposite of what you’re explaining here. Thanks 🙏

Great video, gentlemen, as usual. I tried the stopwatch thing, but mostly got .14. It would be great to see you do videos about how to handle on-course trouble. For example, videos about how hit a low fade from under some trees. But, don't hit low fades from a practice mat, hit it from underneath actual trees on the course. Or how about hitting 150-yard shots from fairway bunkers. Perhaps you could ask viewers to send in their own personal worst situations they have on a course and you could replicate those situations.

If you bought Bobby Jones video package How i play golf, its 18 short lessons with Hollywood stars of the time. He has a segment of having to hit a weekend golfer's tee shot. He's in all sort of trouble even having to extract a ball in shallow creek water with a club that was basically a nine iron. Entertaining and informative plus one of the greatest players in history. O.b. keeler said in the entire series every shot was done in one take including chipping the ball in the cup because of the stymy rule( you couldn't lift, clean and place your ball on the green).

@@ag358 Yes, I've seen the entire series back when the Golf Channel actually put up really good content in the early 2000's. Nonetheless, you should consider doing such videos, as a type of revival of the Bobby Jones videos. You could even dress up in knickers and a Scottish bonnet.

@chachichochacorta8577 Bobby jones doesn't need a revival, his place in history is sound but they do have an annual hickory tournament and many wear the outfits of yesteryear.

@@ag358 Correct. Bobby Jones' videos are well established. My point is that AMG could possibly benefit from going out into the trenches and show how these shots are produced. I've seen way too many great golf professionals teach from the studio or practice range rather than from the course. Addendum: I must apologize to you for insinuating in my first reply that "you should consider doing such videos." I was under the impression that you were either Mike or Shaun, or a representative from AMG.
