I contacted American Tactical Imports about the bulging primers. They stated the ammunition could be too hot of a load, which with the 115gr 9mm factory load isn’t very likely. The second possibility is that it is too light of a load. They suggested I try a 124 grain bullet to rule out ammunition. If it is not ammunition it could be a head space issue.

I guess that I am late to the party here in 2022. I just wanted to say that dad, a WW2 combat veteran, always referred to the MP-40 as a "Burp-Gun." I grew up with that phrase back in the fifties and sixties. Crud, now I am well into my own 'sixties.' --Old Guy

Really appreciate your comments on the way you hold the MP40. I naturally hold it the same way and never gave it much thought. Like hearing about your experience with customer service too.. Recently I had a number of issues with Buds Gun Shop online and after weeks of calling and sending numerous emails they still haven't bothered to respond. Customer Service is very important to me for obvious reasons. Glad to hear American Tactical has good service because I plan to make some purchases.

Why would they send out a gun with incorrect headspace knowing you were already having problems? Anyway its not showing any flattened or backed out primers or extraction issues so I think its just their fitment of the firing pin in the bolt face. Its not out of the or ordinary to see this on Tec9's and high points, I'm sure some others.

I've been shooting a 30 cal M1 Carbine Enforcer Pistol, with an 11 inch barrel for about 45 years now. No folding stock, NOT an SBR. . . .You need a longer sling. . . .You should adjust your sling so it goes around one arm and your neck (typical WWII carry), but tighten it up to the length for a correct "cheek weld" when you aim. It's going to hang high on your chest, and not look cool on your hip. . . .Push the gun away from you, (you do it at timestamp 2:42 .) the sling pulls tight, and you are going to hold a much steadier sight picture. . . .Pushing away with the sling slows down your rapid fire, but more shots will be on target.

From what I understand the reason for the light primer strokes is because they used the same parts for the 9mm as they did the .22. Just not string enough.

I went to eBay and bought a trigger piece and fixed that issue I called ATI and told them about the charger and they told me to use some lock tite on the charger handle and it solved that issue. Yeah, I think you're on the right track of thinking it's a headspace issue. You already know from experience that if you're running some factory +P, the primers still shouldn't look like that. The wonky primer bulges combined with the occasional light strikes, really sounds like a headspacing issue to me as well. Chambers could've been cut a little too deep from the factory or the breach isn't completely shutting flush as far as it should. Maybe a very small flaw in the machining, like uneven cuts somewhere? Could be a super tiny or virtually invisible burr around the chambers mouth or breach face somewhere? Or something along those lines. 🤔 Definitely perplexing. Esp cause it's not a prob being reported around other owners. Could've been a small interference with the tooling, an obstruction of some kind that resulted in a batch of a few parts that were manufactured just a bit "off". Like one of those practically undetectable little things. Either way, it's still a cool gun. Not a complete deal breaker IMO. Unfortunate, but not a total bust. The cool factor def makes up for it.

to strong of recoil spring can cause the problems you have been having, and so the strong force of the spring make it hard to gas blowback and when it does it sends the firing pin forward very hard. I would leave it cocked for a few days to let the spring come more relaxed. hence loosing a bit of spring tension. also bad ammo feeding is mainly due to not being a strong enough spring in the mag, simple fix. just insert a stronger spring into the mag, or stretch. but that wont be a good fix/temp . As said by (iloveshootingshit) also you could have problems with the power of the rounds..The MP40 doe's need to have good strong blowback to operate correctly, so I would get NATO-spec ammo as it is very close to WWII German ammo specs, and a bit more powerful than US SAAMI-spec ammo.. hope this info is helpful.

Try different ammo. I have several 9mm PCC's and each likes its own ammo. I have a Suomi M31 SA, KP44 pistol SA, 2 Sterlings SA carbines TI and TII, UZI carbine and PPS43 pistol SA. You may find it likes cheap steel case Tula or any number of brass, maybe in 124gr or lower...like I said they are all different. Find the right ammo it likes and then stock up on it. My next 9mm pistol will be the GSG MP40 and I fully expect for it to be ammo sensitive...its just part of collecting these converted guns. Also some of these like to run wet (oiled), others do not...you just need to figure each out.

Bulging primers almost looks like hot rounds. Bulging normally means excessive pressure, wonder if you are using +P or hot rounds. As for the light primer strike at the 6 minute mark, it almost looks like the magazine was not seated all the way, the bottom looks tilted back a bit.

Not much I can say. You can try sending it back like I did. Wait forever for it to come back. Only to have them send a new one because the old was too much to fix. Then the new one is still finicky. You can try a gunsmith directly but it might be expensive. Not sure the gun is worth it. I use mine as a display gun. Sad but I'm not sure what the alternative is. Wait for a company to come out withe one made correctly. I still hope to find one someday made from stamped sheet metal. Something that looks the part and has reliability.

Poorly made "replica". While it is made in Germany, it is NOT of German quality. The bolt and springs appear to be made of recycled tin cans. The charging handle falls off easily. The design is NOT even close to the original. Why they didn't make a true copy of the MP40 is beyond me. They could have converted the open bolt design to a closed bolt jut as UZI did for it's semis. Save your money. Buy a Stribog if you are looking for a budget close quarters 9mm you can actually rely on if there is a bump in the night.
