Hello Everyone,
+This is Part 1 of a start-to-finish watercolor painting demonstration recorded in real-time. In this video, I cover intention, composition, values, and color - as well as interpretation, design, formatting, drawing, sketching, and perspective, etc.
+The scene depicts two of the most iconic scenes in all of New York City - the neo-Gothic St Patrick's Cathedral from around 1900, and the Art Deco masterpiece from 1937. It features the iconic bronze statue of the Greek Titan Atlas - struggling to hold up the heavens. And the focus of this painting is less about the actual objects than the negative space between - across which they are in constant dialog.
Thanks for watching!
Tom
+This painting was done on Baohong Watercolor Paper - rough surface - 300gsm :
+15x12 inches
+Pigments by Daniel Smith
+Brushes by Escoda and Neef
+Palette by House of Hoffman
+Sketch pencils by Blackwing and Faber-Castell
+Sketchbook by Stillman + Birn

Another great tutorial. I like the way the background cathedral had less contrast than the photo (serving the painting rather than trying to be accurate). You work has convinced me to start drawing again (I'm so out of practice - lol).

Tom, as always a brilliant tutorial explaining the 'Why' and a superb demonstration defining the 'How'. It seems inadequate to keep saying thank you, but its sincerely meant.

Maybe because it is the especially difficult part? 😂 I have done it sometimes with good results but the effort has been extraordinary. That's why I admire artists whose lines come out so naturally. I love Thomas's pencil handling and how he finishes it off with color afterwards leaves me amazed 😍🤩

some feel it detracts from the painting - or tends to make it more rigid. i think it depends on the kind of result you are after

Thanks so much - And yes. In my long-term course with Terracotta and Artists Network I have videos and downloads just on drawing. But I'll likely be adding content here for that as well

I think it's not a watercoulor in the original sense, it is couloring a drawing.
