When I was a teenager, my mother and I were in a pharmacy waiting for my asthma medicine to be dispensed, and I saw a paperback rack. One book caught my eye with a caption on the front cover that said, "One man against the world!" I knew it was for me. It was The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. My mother bought it for me. Ayn Rand changed my life!!! Now I'm an older retired lady and I've taught my children about her and they have also been influenced. She will always be THE philosopher and I'm always disappointed when I don't see her name on a list of great philosophers.

Most amazing is this: Ayn Rand was but one more philosopher who realized the same thing Montesquieu, Locke, Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison, Paine and Henry realized centuries earlier. Atlas Shrugged is the fictional telling of a non-fiction concept. That Americanism and unalienable rights, is the only natural way for mankind to exist.

Since she passed away in 1982, and if we can build America back to the founding principles, and the principles of Ayn Rand, (nearly the same), would we not construct that statue? We better, and make it 100 feet. The philosophies of man's best way to live, do not come out of thin air, but will seem to vanish in thin air if not remembered, (taught).

Yes, but only if that statue was built with private money on private land -- not built by the government! The ideal, limited government would not be using taxpayers' money to build monuments to anything :) It's been over 20 years, but I think Rand wrote an essay to this effect. It may have been "The Monument Builders", but I can't remember for sure now.

Yes, the main problem with the power grid now is that every single one of the capable Electrical Engineers who served as power dispatchers have emigrated, the ones who, with their knowledge, could deal with the difficult problem of dealing with the operation of a distribution network that has fallen in disrepair. Logically, the best ones can emigrate easily, because their skills are in demand everywhere, and they can pick and choose the best place for them and their family. So, actually, Atlas shrugged.

They really jumped on Rand's use of the word "selfish" to pretend she doesn't exist. There's a video made by the Daily Show that equates her definition of selfishness to a spoiled teenage girl getting upset that her parents aren't spending enough money on her Sweet 16 party. It's intentional, and it's transparent.

My favorite book of all time. Opt out. Use your discernment for your spiritual sovereignty. Without our unique expression our soul can't do its purpose. This was Rand's ultimate message. "Atlas Shrugged" is about benign neglect. It starts with the individual and builds to the Atlas. Don't abdicate your individual sovereignty and then think someone else will fight for your freedom. In the shrug is the loss of all the color and nuance that is life itself.

Atlas Shrugged is too profound and dense to be explained in a movie, not even a trilogy. A big series, with multiple seasons and chapters would be much more effective in conveying Atlas Shrugged's ideas and be more captivating to the audience. The problem is it would cost way too much. Another problem could be that the audience might be limited since few people agree with Ayn Rand. personally, it would be a dream come true if someone made a series like House of Cards or Game of Thrones about Atlas Shrugged.

It's the onus of a businessman (and woman) being the good guy that terrifies a lot of people. Corporations now? Carry a lot of terrible public opinion. (And about that public opinion, the "wisdom" of the collective ...) (Given, some corporations have incestuous relationships with the government. It's a mess.) To the people I pitch the book to, I say "But what about all your hero stories, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, where concerted effort leads to great rewards? It's the same here! And the reward is money. Which is good?" *Cue 20-page Money Speech* Down to brass tacks, summary of AS: a prescient woman just wants to build an awesome railroad, and everyone else tries to stop her. The good guys try and stop her because a great infrastructure will sustain the bad guys. The bad guys want to stop Ms. Taggart because they believe humanity's state is mediocrity, and anyone rising above the rest will shade out the others. Great conflict. Great book. Hate the onus that comes with "Hey, you know, Atlas Shrugged was a fun read!" Well shit.

An older friend of mine introduced me to them and from that Rand's other works back when I was 19 and it completely reprogrammed me from the socialist garbage I was taught in school. If we'd all start gifting the young people these books we could make a change for the better. This made me think about how I loved traveling by Amtrack then in 2019 I took a train and found it had changed immensely. I complained about it to one of the employees and they told me that the government took over the trains and everthing took away all the percs. I paid over $1000.00 for a room for a disabled person and received no help. The bathrooms didn't work I had to keep going up stairs to the next car to go to the bathroom. The electiricity kept going off. The good was horrible. The attendant didn't answer my call bell. Eventually I fell down the stairs when the train hit something. I was supposed to have an attendant to bring my meals. They gave me $700 plus back. If I were anybody thinking about going by first class rail. DON'T!

From what i can tell most people are living in bubbles and have no clue or don't want to know what's going on in our world. Touted as one of the best modern age classic Atlas Shrugged is one of the most controversial and bold books written by anyone . I completed reading Atlas Shrugged yesterday. It took me 5 years and 4 month to complete this book. You can imagine I am not much a reader but mostly, read for pleasure. The plot is laden with subterfuge on the part of Government which is wanting to nationalise everything, a lady is fighting this system along with an lathario Business man and another astute one who all, eventually seems to congregate with others in a world of "purpose". I love the idea, but I felt the book was more of an idealist, ramble than a realist roadmap for the future. Like most authors, Ayn was able to identify the problem but her solution was a mere figment of imagination of a fancy world, devoid of any subterfuge and chicanery. Thus is perhaps, why the books appeals to a teenage and mid twenties group, than it does to, more mature men. I also found the plot to be really devoid of any real meat. Dagny the protagonist seemed to be a "slut" who doesn't mind sleeping around with married men or otherwise. She dated all the leading men in the book and slept with all of them. What surprised me the most, was how they were so happy and devoid of any envy for the each other despite the fact that all three loved her, which was a little too much to begin with, and further they all go on to live "together" happily ever after. It seemed to me that Ayn Rand was visualizing herself as Dagny and living her fantasises through this character. Being somewhat of a misogynist myself, I simply find this behaviour, very typical of most young girls or even some older woman, who want several intelligent and handsome to love them, from where they can cherry pick one. What blew my lid off was the portrayal of "John Galt" the main protagonist. She goes to a great extend describing his physical features presenting him as greek God, who happens to be a great engineer, and a great orator and a leader, all in one, package. That's the most ludicrous description of a character and clearly a figment of her imagination which perhaps will savour to the taste of the impressionable whippersnapper, who wants to change the world. I would have had no trouble if the book was presented as a fictional piece of work in its entirety. However it was a portrayed almost as contemporary evolution of events around the world. She was cleverly using the word USA but what she actually meant was USSR. Perhaps she should have candid about the society which she was portraying. This was almost list perching to the choir - Americans love capitalism and free market and Laissez-faire, and this books preaches the demonisation of govt. controls and socialism. Never mind the length of the book, or the soliloquy which each character incessantly falls into so darn frequently, that it almost feels like a pattern. I had to pretty much skip several parts, though I never lost track of the plot or key words which would typically be spoken at the end of a chapter, yet the book is long and takes and age to complete. However, the book, ends so abruptly that you almost don't expect it to, was actually picking up the pace, though i honestly didn't mind as exhausted reading so far. A new world is created by perhaps a magic wand which Rand was always carrying in her arsenal. She had to end it and she decided, all right here comes the "new" world and don't ask me how. The book talks about reason all through, but I couldn't find a reason here, where she uses her magical skills more than her reasoning ability to lay foundations of a NEW world. Anyways, on a lighter note I managed to learn several new words which I realised, were her favourite perhaps - "Brusquely" was one of them, "Insolence" was another and "recalcitrant" was another. There were many others of course, but I seem to remember these, quite distinctly. All in all I think, you should read this book not for the love of it but for the fact that you can always use it to stir up intellectual debates and play along in any so called intellectual clubs. Perhaps, its is also a good book for those of you who want to connect with the younger generation, who will definitely have strong association with the concepts mentioned in this book. I am now planning to read "The fountain Head" which was more of prologue to this book. Perhaps, I can approach the second one with a lesser expectation and feel happier about. All in all its a good read if you can manage to complete it.

The biggest misconception most people have of her observations, in my opinion, is the difference between honest industry and productivity, and what we should recognize as the parasite within the Free Enterprise system: Capitalism. Free Enterprise is industry, manufacturing, construction, and services. Capitalism is an Investors scam, a way to inhibit innovation, stifle enterprise by supporting only that which they presently are profiting from, by using government and regulation to crush whatever they understand to be a burgeoning competition. No longer can a new business get a loan, it has to seek out investors. A loan can be paid back with interest, an honest business model. But our banking system has become so corrupted that the only way for an innovator to find capital is through investors who attach themselves permanently to any venture, and extract profits in perpetuity, this makes a company never capable of adequately reinvesting in itself. This corruption of our natural system of Free Enterprise is calculated and manipulative, the Bankers destroyed their biggest obstacle: the Savings & Loan industry.

If Ron Paul had become President in 2012, just think how things would be different now. There'd have been no President Trump, and just like Galt united America toward him, Ron Paul would have done the same, there'd be much less division now. Things would still be far from perfect, but we'd be on the road.

“We must seek to assure freedom of action for every man and woman, so long as it does not prejudice the equal rights of others. We must work for the benefit of the many, but in doing so must not overlook the provision of rewards for those who serve best. The rewards must go to the men who are best in all ways and not to the worst. We must see that good lives are rewarded and evil ones punished. We must place the greatest value on things spiritual, and no man must be unduly rich or unduly poor.” “We must provide for the sick and helpless, for the old and incapable. We must assure the integrity of the family. The first objective must be the spiritual goal, which is the only proper one for all men. After that all instruction and law should be bent towards an increasingly harmonious relationship between every living being. The upbringing of children must have as its objective the attainment of well balanced manhood and womanhood.” “We must make men high-minded and above all pettiness. They must be upright and rejoice in their manhood. They must possess courage and fortitude equal to any trial, for there will be many. They must be prepared to endure oppression and persecution with self-control and calmness which no misfortune or calamity can shake. They must also be such men that good fortune and abundance does not weaken them.”- The Kolbrin, Wisdom of the Ages, The Book Of The Sons Of Fire this being The Fourth Book Of The Bronzebook, Chapter 1, The Reconstruction Chapter.
