This episode of the Alternative to Meds Podcast, hosted by Debbie Nelson, features Dr. MaRanda Herring. Dr. Herring is a pharmacist with more than two decades of experience, and she discusses her role as a pharmacist turned holistic health coach.
Dr. Herring had always experienced various anxiety and depression symptoms, such as acid reflux and sleeping problems. Despite her job of prescribing medications, she began to realize that treating the problem at its source was more effective than simply taking a pill. Using her experience in research, she began to focus her efforts on understanding why individuals suffer from mental health conditions. She found that many healthcare facilities opt to prescribe medication rather than use fact-backed research to find the root of the problem.
Dr. Herring was able to successfully taper off her various antidepressants, though it took over a year to do so. As a result, she offers a unique perspective on medication and the pharmaceutical industry as she continues to use her knowledge and education in both areas to encourage individuals to seek more holistic treatment methods. Her efforts have recently been noted on TikTok, as she has accumulated more than 290,000 followers on the platform.
Throughout today’s conversation, Dr. Herring discusses her research regarding the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, diet, serotonin, probiotics, and the importance of taking care of the gut microbiome (the community of bacteria that naturally reside in the gut). Using both personal stories of health concerns and scientific research, Dr. Herring outlines how medications and antibiotics can harm mental and physical health.
She states that many individuals develop a form of attachment to their disorders or conditions as a way to avoid seeking or receiving treatment, especially if they have had poor experiences with medications or treatment in the past. It is crucial to have the right support and resources to take the first step toward seeking help. This requires making important lifestyle changes that can take time to get used to.
At Alternative to Meds Center, we take pride in assisting people from all walks of life as they address medication problems and find the root cause of their issues. Dr. Herring adds that the variety of causes at the core of most physical and mental health conditions must be treated with individualized solutions. For example, individuals should receive a fully tailored treatment plan that examines and addresses all aspects of their well-being. If a particular supplement, therapy, or methodology isn’t effective, another can take its place.
Dr.Herring acknowledges that medication tapering - the process of weaning away from pharmaceutical medications - can be a scary thought for many individuals, especially if they’ve been taking medication for years. That’s just one reason Dr. Herring and Alternative to Meds Center firmly believe in ceasing medication with professional guidance and support. The goal of tapering off medication is to feel mentally and physically healthier, but it requires careful planning to do this successfully. An effectively trained group of professionals can help you eliminate medications from your life and treat the root cause of your mental and physical health issues with holistic and data-backed solutions rather than fixating on the endless cycle of symptoms.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication tapering, reach out to our team at the Alternative to Meds Center today.
