Welcome to the Alternative to Meds Center podcast. Today, the founder of our center, Lyle Murphy, interviews Tim, who graduated from our program with honors. Tim’s story highlights the struggles of overcoming long-term dependency on prescription medications for mental health. Throughout this interview, Tim and Lyle reflect and discuss issues often faced by thousands who find themselves on prescription medications due to a variety of health concerns.
Join us as we navigate through his story of breaking free of medicinal dependency to find true, lasting healing through holistic treatments and therapies.
The Beginning
Tim’s story begins with a seemingly simple prescription of testosterone that left him feeling depressed. Even though Tim had never experienced depressive symptoms before, his doctor discredited the idea that his mood was affected by his medication. Tim left the doctor's office with a prescription for Wellbutrin, an anti-depressant medication that would only make his situation worse.
Tim’s initial concern that his testosterone medication was the root of the issue was ignored. He would then find himself in an eight-year battle against a bipolar disorder diagnosis. During that time, he was prescribed over two dozen different psychiatric medications.
The Problem with Prescription Medication
Tim’s story is like many that we hear at the Alternative to Meds Center. Tim found himself on medications such as Wellbutrin, lithium, and Adderall. These medications can have severe side effects and can counteract the actions of one another. Worse, they can create or worsen mental health conditions and can even create dependence and cause neurotoxicity.
Tim’s reflection on his medical past echoes the concerns we share with our patients about long-term prescription medication use. Unfortunately, Tim’s concerns about his medications continued to fall on deaf ears. The answers he received from his care team were typically that he simply needed to find the right medication and dosages. As a result, he felt that his medical doctors were letting him down and worried that he would never feel like himself again.
It’s important to note that the medical community still doesn’t fully understand how many of these medications work or how they interact with one another. We simply know that they force the brain to alter its own chemistry, often leading to even more severe issues. For many people like Tim, prescriptions leave them struggling for years through an endless series of doctor visits, medications, and serious side effects.
Tim’s Desire for Change
Tim’s account of his journey serves as a source of inspiration for those who desire options beyond prescription medications. Like many others who have completed our program, Tim yearned to feel like himself again. His medications were leaving him dull and numb to the world around him, so much so that friends, family, and even coworkers noticed a change in his personality. Tim was finding it harder to advocate for himself and find relief from his symptoms.
Worse, he was later unable to break free of his bipolar diagnosis, something he never agreed with from the start. Traditional treatment methods not only failed but did nothing to address an issue it was later revealed Tim never had. Throughout this interview, we learn not only of his struggle but his courage to break free and learn to advocate for himself once again.
His Discovery of Alternative to Meds Center
Tim’s struggles eventually led him to the professionals at Alternative to Meds Center. Our center is committed to using holistic approaches to help individuals break free of their dependence on medications. Tim found that safely weaning himself off his various medications has already proven beneficial. He found support through his withdrawal process, dealing with the side effects created and the time it takes for the brain chemistry to balance itself again. In addition to cutting medications out of his life, a healthy diet has also helped him restore balance and achieve a positive mindset.
Through his journey, Tim was able to prove that he was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder. This has provided peace of mind and made seeking help and potential treatment options easier. Holistic approaches are designed to address the body and mind, helping to prevent the risk of being categorized and defined by one diagnosis.
Tim’s story is one of tribulation and triumph. It is a reminder that the mainstream approach isn’t always the best approach. Tim is now living medication-free, and for the first time in a long time, he truly feels like himself.

Thank you so much for posting this video!!! I have a similar story as your guest but I'm still stuck on the medications. It's so very true that the medical establishment will not listen to you if you tell them that you feel that the drugs are not working and making you worse. It's been my experience so far that all the doctors want to do is give you a pill instead of therapy or some other type of intervention. In my case I asked my doctor to put me on effexor as I wanted to try it because I was having problems in the bedroom but also anxiety. So he did and I regret it everyday. It took away my emotions and I've been mainly emotionally numb ever since. I think medications should be a last resort if at all. Therapy is what I should have been prescribed but the pharmaceutical companies have captured the medical industry and taken over.

The medical establishment is so dangerous these days especially if you get a wrong diagnosis and experience what this man has. I was diagnosed as major depression at one point but I haven't had a depressive episode for over two decades. I'm sure psychiatry and the medical industry has helped alot of people but I'm totally against it now for mental health. I'm convinced that the drugs they push do more damage than good and if you look at the studies aren't that much better than placebo.
