This game receives so little praise from so much of the gaming community, and that is a damn shame. Hell it's one of my favorite games of all time, and dude, you can roleplay as Slav Fist Of The North Star very successfully with martial arts and throwing weapons and I did that and lost myself with one character for like 70+ hours.

The best game I've played in my opinion that does eat, drink, sleep right: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly has just the right balance. You can go a while without eating, but need more drink.

This game is soaked to the bone in a certain kind of nostalgia that, I think, will only be understood and appreciated by the people who lived back at that times. How the game world looks, how it sounds, how characters talk and smaller things like a huge amount of NPC are based upon actual soviet actors and their famous roles - all this is targeted for a specific demographics and I wonder if the developers managed to translate this unique atmosphere beyond the few oldtimers like myself?

Well, to be frank with you, I'm 21, from an entire different hemisphere than the Soviet Union and I've only played the classic 90s CRPGs in recent years. And I love this game. It's far from perfect: the main quest drags and some things are beyond counterintuitive. But the writing, sense of place, branches in dialogue and quests and characters make me really appreciate what this game and this team offer. I can't speak for anybody else, but to me, I can say that I like this game despite no nostalgic attatchment to its inspirations.

@@thenamelessone6119 Thanks, I'm really glad to know that people can appreciate this type of aesthetics without being able to relate to it. Stalker and Metro games had a much more fictional approach to how they rendered a post-soviet environment and never gave me the kind of uncanny feeling of "time travel" that ATOM did.

Love the content! You review games very quickly and i like your unique perspective from reviewing games after 100%. I find it very refreshing coming from the ign style reviews after the first two levels. I would like to hear more about the actual 100% part of your experience from the game, like what specifically was difficult about doing the 100% or what was the most enjoyable part of getting 100%.

fair review. Honestly, I wish they could just incorporate both games into one big "director's cut". Trudograd improved engine fixes almost every "indie jankiness" the first one suffer, but alone, it's an incomplete story.

I honestly think that some of the worldbuilding and faction interactions are on par with Fallout: New Vegas. Dan’s factory gang is my premier example: they don’t operate as generic raiders, they’re a protection racket. And they actually do protect some smaller towns from even worse threats, like slavers coming from Syoma Voronock

I appreciate that atom team still updates their first game. Yes it has a bunch of issues but it is the closest thing to Fallout 1 and 2 that you will experience today. And actually ATOM began before the great war. That never made much sense to me. It makes more sense that they formed AFTER and for the collection of pre war tech. As far as stats go, yes personality isn't as important in this game however, you will miss out on ALOT of side quests. However, it is easy to boost your personality with cologne and joints so I always just put it at 2. But personality is still good for a first playthrough as you won't miss out on some of those sidequests. Trudograd gives you more xp for your conversations. So having a high personality speeds up those xp gains.

I loved ATOM, however, what broke the game for me is that if you dump points in Dexterity and attention (if i remember correctly) you are invincible and hits 100% everything very early in the game. This in combination with stealing, i basically had enough ammo, items and money to do everything. I was just clearing areas at that point in the game with no challenge. I don’t know if they changed this with patches as i finished it some years ago.

Thanks for the review. I was stuck on deciding what game I want to get next and I feel like a lot of games that have been coming out lately have been too expensive for the content they provide (i.e. Evil West which I love butttt still not worth $60+) and I know this will be a big bang for my buck.

What can you tell me about worm encounter? Who was under its control? Is it even real? Also worth mentioning that getting your own car lead you to one of the biggest battles in the game. Quickly dropped crafting when it restricted what rags you can use for healing powders. Found maybe 3? bandanas, nothing else worked. Also can't wait for your take on Grimoire - Heralds of Winged Exemplars if you want to try it, those Wizardry-like RPGs are still quite rare even indie industry don't want to touch it.

It's a cool game, I like that in recent years Russian developers have started making more games. Especially about the apocalypse, Russians are more sensitive to it, more dramatic, you feel complete despair, depression in such games. Example a series of subway games. Yes, I know that the developers are from Ukraine, but the author of the books on which the games are made is from Russia. And there is no difference between Ukrainians and Russians, one people divided by corrupt politicians

Pretty much all RPGs fall into the trap that intellect/intelligence is just overpowered. Wasteland (all of them), Divinity Original Sin 2, Fallout, Elder Scrolls... They all struggle because maxing intelligence for more skill points each level is just too strong. It needs a redesign.

I passed this over for so long because the name makes it sound like just another poorly made, generic phone game. The only reason I ended up buying it was because Wasteland 2 was such a terrible Switch port. Atom RPG ended up being almost everything I could want in a game of the same genre. If they made a directors cut with dlc included & changed the name a little they could make a killing.

Doesn't need to be the classic 1-10 or 1-5 but something that your regular viewers will understand in the long run. If you always have the same scale, and we as viewers understand your reviews, we will see the (example) 3.5/7 and we will understand what that means for you.

I really wish studios would stop with half-hearted CRPGs whereby there is a clear optimum build and most of the time it relates to DPS or alpha strikes. It would be so easy in a loot based game to allow the social skills to give you a material advantage such as much cheaper gear or easier access to loot and currency while the usual combat skills have to struggle to gear up and make ends meet but is perfectly capable at offsetting their inadequate gear with personal abilities. The DEX thing is also an unforgettable oversight as it flat out increases both offense AND defense while giving you more freedom to not commit to any risky decisions. Thanks for the honest review, I was thinking of buying the for my next CRPG but it I'd prefer to not be gimped for not choosing the specifc builds the game was designed for.

I'm at the beginning of the game, it felt promising, I love how it is the USSR counterpart to FO1&2 as a veteran of those, but in the end it fails to deliver, the combats are poorly balanced, animations were better in 1998 FO2, it's a bit overwritten, the story is not really engaging (it's quite literally a variation around "Heart of darkness" found Morozov and its team). But it was made with so good intentions I must support ambitious developers full of good intents like that. I think my run is a bit broken for combat considering my character sucks at fighting/shooting and is a speech master, but I wish combats were slightly less unbalanced nonetheless you could be a speech master and a poor shooter in FO and still be able to win gunfights. I'm almost unable to win in any combat situation against humans when more than one are present, most of the time even if my partner and I are armed with guns fighting against unarmed characters it always fail because guns are bad and we get punched to death. Also the lack of karma system is a bit problematic, I mean I could steal, murder people in front of my partner and he doesn't seem to care. The foundations are there, but the game needs plenty of refinement to reach FO2, perhaps the sequel Trudograd fixed all those issues, I don't know, I'll try to finish my run first and learn how it should be played and then I'll go either for a second run or for Trudograd. Despite all those critics and small flaws, I would still highly recommend playing that game.

Just bought this for mobile. Usually don't play on mobile, but this game just hits different. I wish more companies did what these guys did. Bring the whole PC version to mobile and charge 10 bucks for it. Can't beat it honestly. Amazing game so far.

Interesting that you did not mention the writing - the main point why I could never get into this game and wouldn't even think of comparing it to Fallout.

Pretty good review IMHO. In my Steam review I said that given it's jank it had no right to be as compelling as it is, but nevertheless it is and that's largely due to it being somehow worth more than the sum of it's parts.

I tried playing fallout 1 and 2 again but I could not make it, let's hope this game will bring me back to CRPGs (I got tired a bit after kingmaker, and just playing less CRPG games as Kingdomcome or even anthem:o)

Why couldn't you make it? This game is too much like fallout. Sometimes even to its detriment, as they didn't improve much a lot of the systems, such as the combat, which is to be honest very boring. If you couldn't get past fallout then i don't think this one will be different for you. It is cheap though, so i suppose it wouldn't hurt to try.

The only thing I dislike about this game, like I did with fallout 1 and 2, is that shit inventory management.
