Our 2x4 queen bed frame is simple to build and even simpler to assemble. It is designed for easy transport from one college living location to another using a regular car, not pickup, as transport. The entire bed can be broken down into individual sticks by removing only four bolts, and the use of T-nuts that stay embedded in the frame means that the bolts are the only thing you have to keep track of.

This is the only DIY Video that does not intimidate me. No divorce inducing fancy worksop, fancy joints infact not one "OrbitalsanderMicrometerGaugeplanesCircularImpactPocketHoleJigsRouter" tool that cost a tonne of money. I am in South Africa and just window shopping for tools had me bankrupt 😁. The easy going language is perfect for a brain-dead fellow like me. You are my Sage.

I made this - and it worked quite well! One cheap change I'd make would be to add two 3ft 2x4 in between the legs at the front and back of the bed. I used a cheap set of joist hangers to keep them in place. The reason I had to add them was because the legs kept tilting inwards, and pushing out the bolts with slow flexing. With that fix to prevent the legs from angling (they push against each other now), the bed is solid for the long haul. Added about $10 to the cost.

I wanted to make the bed with 3ft legs so to have storage underneath and you answered my exact question ( adding the crossbar on 3 sides since legs are longer). thx. K agree, wonderful design & best use of materials. I haven't started yet but love to rewatch it so far.

Forgot to add the cost of the tools about $400 vs strong bed frame in store about $100. You lost $300. Bidenomics hard at work. And you for got the Putin price hike and you having to buy an EV at $100,000.00 vs $50 delivery, you lost $999,950.00 Of course if you Smash and grabbed, you could get all of the products needed for free except the EV, but if you got your student loan cancelled, you would have enough money to buy a house, sell it for an EV and charger.

I built something like this many many years ago. I added a headboard to dress it up a bit. I also built other stuff that broke down easy . I moved for work frequently and needed durable furniture that didn't look like broke college kid decor. I could pack and move my apartment with ease. Some of those pieces are still floating around in the family 😂

Glad to help. We've seen the same videos and agree. Nothing against woodworkers who have awesome tools but we don't have that level of gear. We like simple, easy construction that can be done quickly but will be strong enough for long-term use.

I'm waiting for somebody to use crown joints at the four corners, and dovetails for the slats, so the whole frame is held together by clean snug joints and a little gravity.

@@halibut1249 I watched a video once of a Japanese carpenter who made a set of drawers without using any nails, screws or any other type of metal so I suspect there's a Japanese carpenter out there that's made a bed with all those fancy joints and no nails or screws.

I built this bed after watching the video. A couple of things to know, this is built to suit a California queen 84" long instead of 78". Also attaching the head board and foot board with only one bolt let's the bed rack under extreme conditions. Other than a dozen 2x4s and 14 bolts costing $150 everything went great. Thanks for sharing the video.

I think it's still Eastern king. Side rails are 84" long for sure, but you forgot to subtract 1.5" on each end for head and foot boards. All four rails are 2x6 (actual 1.5 x 5.5), so slats sits 0.5" (5.5 - 3.5 - 1.5) lower than the rails. Mattress would sit in that 81"x 60" area.

Built this yesterday! we have a really "nice" bed that came with crappy slats that broke (absolute waste of hundreds of dollars, honestly). I found this video and got to work the next day. Modified the lengths a bit to fit a California king and to sit inside a pre-existing sleigh bed frame. That way my wife can keep her thing that looks good, and I get something that actually works. I have a strong feeling every bedroom in the house is gonna get one of these. Some sanding and staining and I think they're perfect! Cost me exactly $131 and that's because I bought extra things for other projects. So in reality it only cost about $95-$100. And it only took me right at 3 hours doing it by myself! Thanks! This video was a God sent 2020 I needed 2 beds and had nothing... I followed your video and made the 2 beds, since then I've made one even taller so I have to climb into bed... and this week just finished 4 night stands and headboard, so THANK YOU, you got me started when I used to have only a circular saw🤦🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍🎨 haha, you folks are marvelous. It's amazing what a miter saw, table saw and planer can offer😃

I love wood working and remember when i was younger my father built all the bed frames and headboards in our home. I love how this concept is easy to break down as i have 2 young kids now myself. I will be making a few of these in my shop very soon. Thanks for the video.

thanks it was helpful. Only one change I am going to make and that is use a 4 x 4 for legs or two 2 x 4 so rails sit on top of legs and not held by bolts. It really doesn't matter in this case, but this will produce a bed that is sturdier. --- Ive seen many people make the same mistake when making a porch or deck. Hope this helps someone.

When ripping a 2x4 please use a pusher tool and another piece of wood to keep the 2x4 up against the fence. Keep your fingers away from blade. When cross cutting pieces on cut-off saw if you butt each piece up against a fixed stop your risking the chance the cut piece will jam between saw blade and stop. To avoid this put a small piece of wood 1/4" thick between wood and stop. Pull the 1/4" piece away before cutting which will allow clearance. Obviously you have to add 1/4" to measurement.

Since the teeth ended up being 1"by 3.75" I wasn't sure why he didn't just cut 1 inch lengths off the end of the 2x4 using the miter saw. The 3.5ish inch width would probably have been close enough. Just need to leave a little extra wiggle room for each board.

Wow... fantastic! Occasionally I would see a television commercial about the Thuma bed frame. Those frames alone are $1100. One could save a thousand bucks if they wanted to put a little time and effort into building one yourself. Great job!

Looks easy enough but I had a super difficult time trying to get the head/foot bolt holes drilled straight enough to get between the other two bolts on the side rails. I would suggest having two people when it comes to this part because you really need another person to help hold the head/foot boards up while you drill. I would also pay a little more and avoid buying the cheapest lumber you can find. Having super straight (no twisted or warped) boards would also make this a lot easier. One last thing...I tried using the 5" 3/8" bolts but they were too long for the side boards, I ended up using 4.5 " 3/8" bolts and they worked great. Thanks for making something easy enough for this beginner to muddle through. 😉

I'm adapting this design/instructions to a california king, and I have to say, it's super easy to understand the instructions, but I just don't know how many slats to put. I've got 12 in my design currently with the 3.75" stubs between, but that leaves gaps at the ends. I'll figure it out, I'm sure. I didn't want to make the gaps bigger, but I was a bit worried about adding more slats too. Anyways, love the video, you've saved me a ton of hassle with this.

I'd put slats at the ends to keep the mattress from sagging when you sit on the edge of the bed. Otherwise it sounds like you've got a great modified design!

@@AtomicDairy I ended up adding a 13th slat, and moving the slats a bit so the ends are supported. It's complete, but I did place the center beam a bit high, so I'm fixing that. It's a solid design.

Thank you. We needed a King bed frame in a hurry and I had plenty of 2x4s and a few 2x6s left over from framing a new house. Perfect. The only problem I had was getting suitable T nuts. I bought all four available between the three local lumber and hardware stores for around $12. I bought 100 more from Amazon for the same amount. I try to buy locally but if they don't stock it, they're SOL.

I've got plans for a wheeled kitchen island, transportable carpentry bench, a storage rack for the fiberglass body from my Lotus Europe undergoing restoration, framing for a green house, etc., etc., ad nauseum. Point taken. We are trying to be more safe. I couldn't find my handled push board that day. Turns out it had fallen into the sawdust collector below the saw. But it's back in use now!

This video gave me the inspiration and confidence to build my own bed frame. I had to make some adjustments due to attaching it to the current headboard I have. But I wanted to point something out for anyone making this bed: the measurements are off. You can tell at the end of the video that the bed is too long for the mattress. This probably matters to people who are not used to clearing a few more inches to prevent running into the corner of the bed. A queen mattress is only 80" long. No reason to make an 84" side. As well, if the head/foot pieces are 60" long, and you add the 1.5" for each long side attached to it, you'll end up with a 63" width instead of 60". If you don't want wood sticking out on the end/sides of your mattress, adjust these measurements.

All completely true but we did that on purpose so that the mattress would fit inside the frame. We probably should have said that in the video. Plus we used a memory foam mattress that we are beginning to believe is slightly larger than a regular mattress. Not much bigger but enough to make our frame a little larger than what would be needed for a standard mattress. But it's awesome that you built one!

I noticed this too but also the mattress was pushed against the wall (jumped over the head rail) so it made it look like the frame was too long. My H and I will modify the design to use 2x8” side rails to “nest” higher on the mattress.

Twenty four 2x4x8's and four 2x6x8's. That bed frame is solid. That's pretty great. I also really like the idea of using rafter hangers. Now we need a stress test. How many adults can jump on the bed before it gives. Not the bed, mind you... But your wife's patience. Lol

@Atomic Dairy. In the discrimination you have 2-2x6 72” ends (I assume header and footer boards) which are 6 feet. But in the video you state 5 feet which are 60”. Should they be 5’ or 6’?

Great bed nice and strong with one exception, the bed is solid FWD to AFT but the legs rock side to side pivoting off the single bolt configuration. I chose to raise the legs higher 1.5" to match slat level which provided ample space for a second bolt. I also added a third bolt to the side rails because I could. Result solid as a rock thank you for posting this video very informative 👍

You may need to amend your materials list, you show the ends @ 72 inches. I'm no carpenter but I believe that's 6 feet as opposed to 5😁 Also the center beam comes out to 81 inches.

Thanks for watching! My father was Navy and we were stationed in Zambales for a couple years back in the 70s. I started High School in Bataan at the Navy base. Many, many fond memories of the Philippines, and the wonderful people I met there. Also lumpia.

Home Depot will cut to size for you. The size would depend on what size bedframe you need. Example all queen beds are 60 x 80. Make your boards an 1/2 to inch bigger on each side.

IN MY CALCULATIONS YOU CAN GET ALL THE WOOD YOU NEED WITH TWO 2X6X8, THREE 2X4X12, TWENTY-THREE 2X4X6, AND THE HARDWARE IS 14 BOLTS (3/8"), 14 T-NUTS, TWO RAFTER HANGERS FOR 2X4 AND FOUR SCREWS THE WOOD FOR ACTUAL FRAME IS: 2 - 2X6 - 84" 3 - 2X4 - 74" 9 - 2X4 - 11" 26 - 2X4 - 5' 20 - RIPPED 2X4 - 3.75" PLUS THE HARDWARE MENTIONED ABOVE

@@zjames1324 I would think that 6 or 8 2x4's would be more than enough to hold the mattress. Back in the day (30 years ago) a bed frame had 4 or 5 1x4 slats for a full size bed. Just my thought on the slats. Liked the build and could adjust to any size bed - twin, full, queen, or king

thanks you mate ..i made it :) it was easy and fun .. i didnt use teeth i screwed the slats in place (the bed will not gonna move ) and stained the bed with wood oil from ikea it looks amazing and sturdy

Tightbond III. It works indoors and out. Even though this is an indoor bed it will be transported to multiple locations by a college student and could end up in a storage unit between semesters, so we decided to build it as if it will be lightly exposed to the elements, just in case. Tightbond III is really good glue!

Evan n. Doan Yeah, still cheaper than buying a bed frame unless you want to get the cheap metal frame at $50... I planned on around 50-70... Ended up costing $110ish... But I’ve noticed that the cost on dimensioned timber has gone up... So that could be part of it...

Super easy and nice design! The only improvement I might offer would be to suggest you account for the width of the material in your measurements next time so that the frame isn't larger than the mattress. Thanks for sharing!

Agreed. We deliberately made it slightly larger than the mattress because our user wanted the mattress to sit inside the frame. But every mattress is slightly different in size and you can set the dimensions to any size that works for you.

Great build that can support my F150 w 2x4s 8"o.c. I'd orient 2x4s 90 degrees onto their "strength axis" and space em 16" o.c. since 2x4s now come w mortages and 8% adds up fast

This DIY is absolutly amazing! Took an hour and a half for 2 people to put together with basic power tools. My only recommendation after using the bedframe for a few months is to put the bed stringers vertically instead of horizontal. Using the horizontal ones iv had several snap. Havnt since I made the switch!

This is just the design I was looking for to build a sturdy but simple and movable bed for my 18yo who still is at home but will be looking to find their own place in the foreseeable future. Bonus is no planer or edge joiner required, because I don't currently have those in my arsenal of power tools.

Pretty sweet. Great video. I feel like id want a few screws to secure the support rail to the outside wall, i dont trust glue alone…eventually it might give. Or since you married the 2x4s for the legs…maybe the outside one is shorter and the support rail longer going over half the leg…bolted through w the bolts you used
