I kinda felt what Geoff Johns was trying to do with Superboy-prime was not meant to mock DC fanboys but a Cautionary Tale how People like Superboy-prime see themeselfs as the victim will blame others for their actions or faults or not showing any hope of moving on or taking any blame even Superman of earth-two did this but pulled back after realizing his own mistakes

Tbf, Restoring the Snyderverse wouldn't be popular if DC Films had an actual future-thinking plan. The Snyderverse if anything is future films pushing the franchise forward while the films WB seems to want are safer, more stagnant films to appeal to the nostalgia-blind fanboys who screeched at MoS in the first place.

This can certainly apply to many fandoms. RWBY, He-Man/She-Ra, Transformers, any video game franchise that goes for a long time, you get the point. Rwby kinda dosn't count though. Sure, there is the whole "what Monty planned" thing, but of those all I know is that he planned for Jaune to be a liability and thus a cause for Pyrrha's death instead of just not being there, and anything else was just fans putting words on his mouth. But most complaints I hear that could be related are about how the older seasons were better, but as it is still a long but single continuing story it does not count as nostalgia.

"This can certainly apply to many fandoms. RWBY, He-Man/She-Ra, Transformers, any video game franchise that goes for a long time, you get the point." no. I don't get the point. New He-Man / She-Ra cartoons were made just to satisfy USA Democrat Party voters. I am not a Democrat Party voter. I am not even from USA. But I grow watching He-Man and She-Ra cartoons when I was a child during 80s. Transformers movies were really terrible and there were nothing representing the spirit of the original cartoons. Look, I don't want "carbon copy" of the past just because the "NOOOSTAAALGIAAA". I want the spirit of the original work. For example. TMNT cartoon were really silly other than the carefully done Season 1. TMNT 2012 carried that spirit to the modern times, and I believe it was a really good cartoon. I am not a Star Wars fan, but I appreciate the work they did in Episode 4. Mandalorian TV series carried that spirit to the modern times and made a really good series. Or let's talk about the The Batman. I don't believe it was as good and polished as Joker movie. However it focused on the detective and noir settings of the original Batman books, and that's why I appreciate the work they did in that movie. "NOOOSTAAALGIAAA" is not a specifically bad thing, that's why you don't have to neglect the original spirit just to satisfy your Anti-Nostalgia persona...

No offense to WWE fans or haters, but this is how I feel when I see or hear "we want the Attitude Era back" comments. While it had memorable characters like Stone Cold, Triple H, The Rock, and Mankind, along with compelling stories such as Stone Cold vs Mr. Mcmahon and the rise and fall of DX we must remember that the Attitude Era was a product of it's time. Women were nothing more than fanservice, Wrestlers cut themselves on razor blades to simulate injury and hit each other on the head with steel chairs, Crude stereotypes for Black and Asian Wrestlers were abundant, and stories like the Brawl for All, the Higher Power, and Mae Young were abysmal misfires. While not everything since then has worked and some Wrestlers weren't given their dues like we had hoped, to ask for an older era to come back would undo all the good that came after it ended, at least in my opinion.
@RC99_Productions
@RC99_Productions 3 жыл бұрын
As a wrestling fan myself, I can relate. While I love the Attitude Era and grew up during said era, I will not say that everything it did was the right thing or even the most logical thing. Many segments and promos were dumb and degrading, but as fans, we lapped all that up because we were invested so much into the product, and as time went on, we came to appreciate what came afterwards with the Ruthless Aggression Era and even nowadays with the Modern/WWE Network Era. The thing is we can never go back in time neither can we demand things such as intentional bleeding, chair shots to the head or ladies wrestling in their bikinis in the WWE. The WWE, much like many other media, must change with the times and constantly evolve to what is privy now and we all have to accept this whether we like it or not. Like you said, while the Attitude Era DID have compelling storylines. However, regressing back to that time period would undo all the good the comes later.

People don't want any of that back. They just want the compelling stories and interesting characters back. The only people sold on modern wrestling are the marks. @@brendaspence1824 Fug you, too, because I didn't start regularly watching wrestling until 2017. I then stopped watching it in 2019, when I realized I was no longer enjoying my TV junk food. In other words, I HAVE NO NOSTALGIA. 8 to 10 million people were watching Raw and Nitro each week in 1999. Even before streaming was created, BOTH shows underwent shake-ups in their creative processes that saw a sharp, noticeable decline in viewership in the years 2001 and 2000, respectively. Everyone made and continues to make excuses except for the correct one: that the stories and characters were weaker and made less sense overall. The Attitude Era and pro wrestling as a whole may be stupid, but even stupid requires competency. A cheap chocolate candy bar is not as posh or complex as hand-made tiaramisu, but whoever makes it still needs to know what they're doing and what changes lead to which results. If the marks who run the industry knew what they were doing, their audience would be growing. Again, 8 to 10 million watchers then, vs. 4 million today if we're being _extremely_ generous. You think it was the audience's taste or the product that changed first?

Note: this is my future self saying this. In my present, I haven't read or watched Misery yet, but I will let you know when I do either of then.. In the book and movie adaptation of Stephen King's Misery, it exemplifies this problem perfectly. The character of Annie Wilkes is the perfect metaphor for what people become even when they don't realize it. A toxic fan. And people like Paul Sheldon can be caught in the middle of it all. It's his idea to kill Misery, the main character of his book series, and people should learn to accept it. This is not the case with Annie. She doesn't want Misery to die, people can understand that. But it's Paul's own decision of what he can do with his character, not her. It is also prominent when Annie tries desperately to force Paul into retconning her death, she does everything she can to make him do it, going so far as to break his two legs to prevent him from escaping. Same case with Superboy-Prime in this book. He gets so caught up in the good old days he doesn't realize that was all a long time ago, and he should look forward, like how Annie should've accepted her favorite character dying. They both want to relive the past and don't realize it should stay in the past, instead look forward to living the future. IS nostalgia toxic? No, absolutely not. It's okay to think about the past from time to time. CAN nostalgia be toxic? Yes, especially when people have a future to look forward to. Wife, children, jobs, those are things to look forward to. Thinking about back then at the wrong place in the wrong time can effect you deeply, as in the point where Suberboy-Prime 'accidentally' harms a few of the Teen Titans. It's like Ferris Beuller said "Life moves by so fast. If you don't stop to look around once in a while, you may miss it."

Why do people keep comparing fandoms to this concept? Do people not get what Linkara is saying here? There is good nostalgia and toxic nostalgia. There is nothing wrong with liking something that was from the past. Earlier seasons of a show are often times better than later seasons. And by that same token, earlier movies are often times better than later movies. I don't think anybody is going to try and convince anyone that Star Trek V was better than Star Trek II because it came out later. Same thing with Jaws. I don't think anyone is going to try and convince anyone that Jaws 3 was better than the first movie because it came out later. That's not the point he's making here.

The problem is that nostalgia goes toxic very easily. For example, the Masters of the Universe Subreddit doesn't let anyone who likes the netflix reboot of She-Ra join, because they are so obsessed with what was from the 80's, that they cannot accept that anything else is possible, and shift their issues onto newer fans, saying that new fans have no care and respect for their beliefs, when in truth, the old guys strike first then play the victim game, and use double standards to shift the blame. And for what? Because they'd rather see Hordak as a bumbling idiot who can't tie his own shoes instead of a complex character who yearns to be loved by his father and is self hating?

The book doesn’t have an answer to this, because there isn’t really one, beyond just writing a universe where every character and story gets the justice the fans want to see, which isn’t realistic. You can’t please everyone, you can only do what you think will work, under the purview of your editor and publisher. Sure Johns pushed characters over other characters, he’s not the only one guilty of this, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth discussion within the narrative of the text. You can be guilty of something and still be critical of it, in fact that would be better than if you were not guilty admittedly, you know firsthand the problem of doing that. Just my two cents.

So, in a way, Superboy Prime is the Darth Treya of DC. A character used by the writer to voice their criticisms about how other people use the world. And people fixate on the wrong thing; Prime's whining and Treya's, nihilism. Taking what the characters say at face value without considering the idea behind it. Leading to one being mocked and the other (In my opinion) unjustly praised.

It's funny that while Superboy Prime became VERY HATEABLE! He's the perfect model of what "Toxic Nostalgia looks like" LOL I mean as a Fire Emblem Fan since playing it as a punk teen when it first came to america on the GBA and playing every new entry on release day and even the old ones once I learned how emulators worked! I use to look down on the 3DS Fire Emblems and acted alot like Superboy Prime when it came to the GBA FE games....then me and my little brother shared a WiiU and I re-bought the GBA FE and alongside playing the old games via emulator, and while I had fun! I didn't have as much fun as I did with say FE Fates (Story was Average to below average, But Gameplay, More Conquest really is top tier!) Basically that was my first taste and encounter with "Nostalgia Vision/Goggles" where it was grand and good and I remembered it as such as my memories of the games were protected from scrutiny and I had a need to protect them from such because those were the best memories of my life....but then when I replay them with far more experience as a Fire Emblem Fan in my belt and older, I started to notice the flaws, and realized many of the things I thought I liked and felt never should have been removed in Future FE starting with the 3DS Era were not top tier as I thought they were and the designers of the new game made a good call removing to fixing them! Not every new choice was a smart one! But lets just say I was surprised as someone who loved Archers in the GBA Fire Emblem and found them as useful as everyone else that I was surprised just how HATED the Archer class was! Most of the hate came down to some of the haters just not understanding how Archers worked or in the end hating any class that wasn't a One-Two Shot Killer who can potentially Solo! Yeah I'm of the "play the game as intended over Trying to break the game" (That's warranted to a bored drunk future run out of boredom AFTER a legit playthrough to see what I can get away with LOL). Just going to say I have a love/hate with Tier lists and sometimes it's not because a good amount of my favorite's are made low tier(I'm mature enough to understand "My OPINION" and they do give legit reasons that I can understand their point even if I don't agree). But I guess the hate comes from the smug assholes who act as though it legitimizes ALL AROUND hatred! You know the idiots who act like Superboy Prime to bully fans of "Low Tier shit" The difference between Nostalgia and Toxic Nostalgia isn't that hard to note! One should keep an open mind less they become a non-powered Superboy Prime! A perfect scary example of a Toxic Nostalgic fanboy/girl who abuses their great power to force their viewpoint on others! Even to the point others pull "Everyone has standards" on just how bad that individual can get! But yeah, funny how Superboy Prime ended up being an example of Jeff's poor attempt to make him a model of insulting Nostalgia critics.....and ended up fitting the example of what he represents himself LOL

I still don't get why Batman was so upset about some of those heroes wiping the minds of said villains because the villains figured out who the heroes were. Yes, I understand he got caught but that was an accident. Ok heroes should be allowed to have normal lives if they want to. Also, why is everyone so upset about Diana killing Maxwell Lord? HE LITERALLY TOLD HER THAT HE WAS NEVER GOING TO LET GO OF HIS HOLD ON SUPERMAN!!!! What was she supposed to do? Keep Superman prisoner until Batman got a hold of his Kryptonite? How long would that have taken, how many more innocent lives could've been hurt or lost while they were waiting? Ok, this is Batman and Superman's biggest issue? Is that they are so focused on their codes, that they won't see what's in front of them? Yes, I understand why Superman and Batman don't kill. But Wonder Woman wasn't raised that way. The Wonder Woman that I know is someone who can be as gentle as a summer breeze, but as dangerous as a typhoon.

@alexandrefrauches132 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with the mid wiping thing is not the fact that the heroes erase the villains knowloge about their identities, is the fact that they straight up reprogram their minds to make them less of threat. Identity Crisis establish that it was because of the mind wiping that Doctor Light went from a terrifing rapist to a silly villain and, in Catwoman solo book, it was hint that the reason why Selina reformed and became a anti-hero during the Ed Brubaker's run was not because of character development but because Zatanna use her magic in her mind. It's one thing erasing the secret identity of villain to protect your secret identity and it's other to mess with his mind and make the villain different to fit your own view of how they should behave. The DC heroes weren't just protecting their friends and family, they were violating the villains right to choose, their free will.
@alexandrefrauches132
@alexandrefrauches132 3 жыл бұрын
Also, Batman had every reason to be upset with Zatanna and the others. Instead of just talking to him in that moment, explaning that they took a vote and Batman could just vote against it, creating a tie and stopping the situation right there, or just obey his order since Batman is one of the founding members of League, they choose to erase the last 10 minutes his mind so he wouldn't tell the other members. Accident or not, the fact that the "heroes" decided to wipe Batman's mind, not the mind of criminal who discover their secret, but the mind of friend and ally, and didn't told him all these years to cover up their own actions makes Batman's anger and distrust very justifiable

@@alexandrefrauches132 that's true ill give you that. My whole thing with Maxwell Lord is that could they have found a way. Maybe, but my question is how long would it have taken. Yes I understand killing is wrong, that heroes should never want to kill. But what I also understand is that sometimes events happen that are way beyond anyone's control, and if a hero has to choose between saving an ally or losing a life of a villain, than save the hero.

@@K1ng1995 I don't have much of a problem with Wonder Woman killing Lord, specially considering the context of the situation. However I can understant why people didn't like it since there were other ways she could have solve this. Instead of using the lasso on Max, Wonder Woman should had used on Superman, breaking him from Lord's control. Then, they could just knock Max down and find one way to neutralize his powers. They already had fought against villains with mind control powers before (ex: Grodd, Doctor psycho, Poison Ivy). If the heroes can defeat them without killing it, then Max shouldn't be any different.
@alexandrefrauches132
@alexandrefrauches132 3 жыл бұрын
Also, while I agree that Wonder Woman doesn't have the no killing rule as Superman or Batman, most of the time she only kill monsters and unreasonable creatures. When comes to mortals villains, who she can talk and negociate, she choose to do it, trying to solve things diplomatic instead a violent one. In the end of the day she is ambassador of peace, not a ruthless warrior. It's kind like Padme from Star Wars. She will engange in combat when the chips are down but if possible she will try to show compassion and defeat the villain without resorting to stoop herself to her violent enemies levels, like Ares.

The main problem with this mindset in general of the idea of Toxic Nostalgia is that it always comes as a counter-criticism to downplay or pick apart the negative criticisms of modern things, implying that we should give in to the modern lowering standards that happen in society and trying to be like “Well the past had problems too, stop pretending it was all perfect.” when nobody ever says that or implies it at all. When people say; “This thing was better in my day”, it is always in response to something that can be measured and objectively pointed out as missing today. Case and point; the recent Star Trek shows have been quite benal and lacking in conplexity and depth of social commentary. While the special effects and acting itself may be better comparatively; it sadly cannot hold a candle to the old stuff no matter how many exploded planets they throw in as a dramatic plot point. This doesn’t even necessary apply to fandom criticism either, it can be easily applicable in the political and philosophical world too; Democratic Republics before the age of enlightenment were considered passe and not viable to be a successful form of government because of the failures of it in Ancient Greece, and people who criticized it were following the motif of “You are living in an antiquated fantasy.”

And when people refer to Jurassic Park equals dinosaurs, that’s it, and wanted the word ‘park’ instead of anything else so badly is a sign of toxic nostalgia, even the title ‘Jurassic Park 3’ is pointless when the movie doesn’t feature the park itself, just an endless chase scene of characters running around around on a dinosaur infested island like idiots. "Original Jurassic Park fandom in a nutshell." "While an opinion is one thing, but overthinking the first trilogy being ‘flawless’, like bashing modern CGI no matter how realistic it looks" I love how people like you blame EVERYONE LIKING A SPECIFIC THING and dumb all of them into "FANDOM" just because they don't support the same ideology as you. So... we can accuse you being a "toxic fandom" just because you neglect old classics as "Toxic Nostalgia" and praise blindly every new product just because they are "new and shiny" and nothing more. Look, I know you are still a kid and young and never watched the Jurassic Park movie when it released. But it was a "technological marvel" for the year it released. Reason is this: Jurassic Park creators combined practical puppetry, Computer Generated Images, and CGI animations based on on stage puppetry. They worked hard and combined all of the methods just to benefit from each technique. And even the camera angles are used carefully. Just because you made yourself believe that "modern CGI is perfectly realistic", it is not. Reason is this: Even if you work 100000 CGI animators AT THE SAME TIME for a specific scene, you can't simulate REAL WORLD PHYSICS 100% accurate. What you make in Computer is just a "simulation" and this can make people feel unconvincing watching that scene. Another reason is this: CGI animations are made to make a specific scene calculated with PERFECT accuracy. Real World doesn't work with "PERFECT" accuracy. You need organic mistakes and organic movements in scenes. And CGI Animations (DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY YOU SPEND ON THAT ANIMATION) can't represent those organic movements. Because they are CALCULATIONS man. CALCULATIONS. Real World Organic movements can't be represented with Mathematic formulas. That's why people criticize modern movies depending on CGI and neglect practical effects. This doesn't make anyone "toxic nostalgia fandoms in a nutshell". This only makes you a "fanboi against every kind of criticizing".
