Bertholdt's character never really resonated with me until his last "explosion". He realized that he was just a pawn in this game, and that what they were involved in was much bigger than him and everyone else. If he, Reiner, and Annie hadn't destroyed the walls that one day, some other warrior kids would. It truly is a cruel world they live in.

I just blew my own mind. Bertholdt is technically the very first character we see in the whole series, well we see his hand at least lol

Bertholdt is the most soft spoken cadet, seemingly a gentle giant. When this theme plays, we see how dangerous he is when he’s confident. Going blade to blade with Mikasa, then transforming into a god of destruction

It's so sad how Bert started out the most timid and remorseful of the Warriors, but ultimately ended up the coldest and most detached in the end. I guess that's what he had to do to cope with what he was doing. Poor guy.

The name "apple seed" could mean so many things. It could be planting the seed for their futures, it could reference a suicide mission, or possibly... it could be referencing the forbidden fruit, which allowed Adam and Eve to learn the idea of good and evil.

Reiner: where's Bertholdt? Armin: what?

I actually think Bertholdt is one of the most tragic and misunderstood characters in the entire series (spoilers ahead for anime watchers by the way). He's (aside from the founding titan) the most monstrous and destructive titan, he's the most iconic and instantly recognizable villain in the series both in the story and for the readers, and everyone he came to care about and understand on the island feared and hated him, just like he did with them when he first showed up on the island. He shares the same burdens all of the other warrior candidates who stayed on Paradis island, but he never got to live to reunite with the people he came to know and care about like the others and earn any amount of redemption by stopping the rumbling (though technically he played a big role in the paths realm). He never even got to experience the moment of knowing his former comrades understood why he did what he did, he basically died as medicine for Armin and was truly alone. Reiner has never been truly alone, Annie has never been truly alone, only Bertholdt had to experience that moment. I remember watching him getting eaten originally and feeling very satisfied because I saw him as a monster too. Attack on Titan is really good at taking moments and characters and recontextualizing them, and now all I feel is sadness and pity when I go back to that moment.

Isayama had a powerful message towards the warrior trio on child vulnerability and child grooming. Sadly, people like the warriors do exist in the real world fighting for causes they generally believe is good without knowing how manipulated they were until the last minute.

Bertholdt didn’t deserve to die. He was probably the most underrated character

He will always be our colosal titan.

For Anime only, Erwin was the saddest death. For manga readers tho we get to see Bertholdt's death animated after learning his full possibly most messed up history before his death (spoilers ahead): he became a warrior to give his family a better life while he shortened his life to 13 years. He endured harsh training and tactically nuking hundreds in wars. From up high, he can see the aftermath of his destruction very clearly. Goes to paradise Island and sees his friend become a snack. As a 12 year old brained washed into believing the island was home to devils he began the attack on paradise island and together with Reiner and Annie coordinated an attack that slaughtered hundreds of thousands. Blends in as a spy and learned that these devils are just people and realizes the horrors of his actions while Reiner was conveniently protecting himself from the truth with multiple personalities. Forms comrades and friends with the "devils" like Eren. Eren tells him how he lost his mom to his face, full story. Develops unrequited love for Annie. Witnesses death of Marco and has to remain sane as he watches Reiner go insane. Has do deal with Reiner playing Soldier OVER and OVER as he almost gets killed and just casually reveals his and Bert's identity to people. Has to fight his former comrades to the death. Is questioned by his comrades and finally has a mental breakdown. Finds out Annie is captured and being tortured. At least Ymir saves them from losing 2 shifters by giving herself up (she is an unsung hero in my book) then he is ordered to again slaughter his comrades. He has no choice really. Even with all he knows, with his family's lives in Marley's hands he goes to his death. He basically could have lived if detonated right away when he was tossed. Instead he had to go save Reiner. Man I wish he at least didn't wake up to watching his old comrade watch him get eaten while he begged for help. Even in his last moments, he thought of his comrades. Bertholdt Hoover, the man who was possessed by the God of Destruction, now Rest in Peace.

What a tragic fate. Attack on Titan world really is a cruel world. There is no black and white world but only grey world. Anything goes as long as the reason justify the means. What a story. I also feel pity to Berthold. He's a good person, but because of which side he is from, he has to do the despicable action.

As a manga reader watching the death of his animated, broke my heart.

How heartbreaking it must have been for Armin to first lie to Bertholdt about Annie and then eat him mercilessly. The character of Bertholdt was such a great, great one.

“Old man, please remember me.” His father, his only family, died saying how proud he was of him. “Like the smell of her hair, those times always fly by so fast.” He died crying out for Annie (and Reiner) and never got to tell her how he felt about her. Bertholdt is heavily underappreciated, specially during his last moments. The sudden change in his character during that last transformation sequence, he went out like a badass. And to think he was such a background character in S1 when in S2-4 showed there was so much more to him. And then the OST, it’s absolutely perfect and sad once you get to the lyrics. SPOILERS AHEAD With 137 over the horizon, there’s a SLIGHT possibility Bertholdt could be revived by Ymir (along with other titan shifters) and hopefully to stay. But at this point, he would only have Reiner since his family is dead and Annie, well, she and Armin seemed to be becoming something. At this point I’ll just be happy to have him back.

I still cannot accept the fact that berthold didnt get the chance to tell annie about his feeling towards her :(

Despite his sins, I could never hate Bertholdt. He was both a murderer, a victim, an enemy, and a friend. When I think about it, they didn’t have much of a choice in the cruel world they lived in. I can’t imagine the guilt/isolation/hopelessness he felt, not wanting to kill his friends but needing to regardless just to end the conflict. He was so emotionally numb in order to carry out his duty during the battle that even Mikasa notes that he seems like a different person, yet when he’s about to get eaten, he goes back to his normal self and for a split second thinks the 104th are still his comrades. I think his death was fitting, but I wish we got more time with him as a character because he was really interesting

This was and still is the most tear jerking and goosebump inducing transformation in the entire series for me. It's the first time he was at peace with his situation. Bertholdt was such a good character man.

Berthold and Eren were actually the first ones to seriously question this worlds morality. Berthold was the first to realize that there was nothing as simple as black and white. No side was absolutely right in their beliefs. Manga spoiler incoming. Eren was the first to accept that the people who killed the most in this story, the Titan Shifters, were mostly not at fault, but born into certain circumstances that forced them to grow into people carrying out hatred onto their enemy without thinking. Eren told Reiner he is not evil and he understands him, but that the cycle is still not over because Paradis Island is a target of the world, now more so than ever before. So Eren transformed and went on a rampage. He realized that he was just stuck in a cycle of hatred but he also realized that at the moment he was not able to break the cycle, so he kept fighting till he could. Berthold on the other hand, while having the same realization, did not fight with true purpose anymore. Him accepting that his enemies are not in the wrong made it so he still played his role as a warrior, but he did not care who wins or loses anymore. He was free from this hatred. Sadly in his dying moments he thought of his friends and the one he loved, so his death was full of despair that Annie will never even know of his feelings.

RIP Bertholdt, I really don't know why, but his death was one of the saddest for me.

I still don’t know the full story yet but nothing hurts me more than seeing people happy with Berthelot’s death. I can just tell that that he is one of the most mentally tormented people in this sad and broken story and now his whole life and purpose has been taken away by the cruel circumstances of this vicious but beautiful world that they live in

Berthold was the ultimate warrior and true soldier. He accepted his sins as his duty and even though he had friends in both side, he made peace with himself and in the end choose to fight without regrets. His only regret would be to not being able to see Annie a last time.

Gotta given it to Bertholdt he is really some spy for not being remembered as much as Reiner. I mean the guy was and still is the FACE of the series.
