Jeff, great video. Just started a clover-chicory plot this year. Sprayed it off before planting this spring and have some broadleafs coming in. What can I spray killing broadleafs but not harm the chicory? Want to go back and seed again this fall to thicken this first year plot up.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 my question was regarding planting a small food plot here in South Jersey, (Salem County) I have about an acre to work with but,...I want to just try just a 300x300 area this season to see how it goes. I cannot get any equipment to this location. I'd like to do Turnips as you have done before because after harvest time here, all the crops are gone. I'll fall bow hunt and firearm hunt to the end of Jan 2025 so I was thinking Turnips would be a sustainable choice in this situation and location which is near a Meadow that feeds into the Delaware River a few miles away. Thanks for any advice.

The hard way to learn this lesson is to plant, roll the buckwheat down, spray gly, and a week later wonder why the buckwheat stood back up. Waterhemp is the worst! The second spraying - is that with the 2,4d as well?

Great advice Jeff! I’ve tried “frost seeding” clover and it just doesn’t work unless you have pre killed the weeds per your video. I have wasted a lot of seed by trying to get by the easy way and failed every time. Fall clover is now my go to with a wheat or rye cover crop!

Because the Glyphosate needs the assist to help kill broadleafs, and Glyphosate also kills grass fairly well...which 2-4D cannot. It is extremely rare that someone is only killing broadleafs in a field...hence the Glyphosate 😉 And it's cheap...

Im new to the food plot stuff. I have ordered some 24db for my clover plots. I also bought some rural king 41% glyphosate stuff that I mixed at 2.5 oz per gallon. I just stayed around the yard on clover and other weeds to see how it reacts. Any pointers? All I do is read and try to listen but sometimes people arnt super specific and I don’t want to kill everything I’ve planted.

Never go by ounces per gallon. 41% Glyphosate (used personally for 25 years with 100% success) is measured in quarts per acre. No more. No less. You need to figure out what your sprayer's coverage is per acre, and go from there. 2-4D is measured in pints per acre. Simazine in quarts per acre. Quincloric is ounces per acre. But again....do not ever go by ounces per acre...that is a big rookie mistake. After all, it only matters how much per acre you spread...the water you mix it with is just the carrier of the chemical to the weeds. For example with Glyphosate it doesn't matter if you mix 8 gallons per acre of water with 2 quarts per acre ..or 30 gallons with 2 quarts per acre. 2 quarts is what you need, either way. It's the same for every other herbicide...

Jeff, if I understand you correctly, your saying you are going to spray this plot with 2,4,D and gly then waiting a week, then throwing down seed. I thought if you use 2,4,D you need to wait over several weeks before throwing down seed or you might have germination issues with the new seeding as the 2,4,D has more residual than the gly. Is that not the case? Thanks Much

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 18 күн бұрын
The 2-4D stays in the ground for about 10 days to 2 weeks. Up to 21 days if sprayed very heavy. By using a moderate amount and spreading seed after 7 days...the seeds won't germinate for at least a week afterwards. So we are good. I've actually spread seed the same day with no failures....but we are pretty exact with our chemical amounts and even with success, it's not something I want to make a blanket recommendation online for. I try to keep folks safe the best I can...

If Im going to mow my plots in the fall, I typically will keep them manageable through the summer by mowing until about 2 weeks or so before I plan to plant. I will then plan to rototill the plots around 2 weeks before planting. That way the weeds present will germinate and be about 8-10" tall which I will then throw seed down and then spray with Gly and cultipack immediately after which will kill any weeds that have germinated, and the plot will stay mostly clean of weeds through the fall.

Why are deer hunters following the farming practices of Big Ag that are destroying our soil, waterways, and food? Spraying these chemicals for a “food” plot is absolutely disgusting. Us deer hunters need to switch our mindset to more sustainable and chemical free alternatives. Shrubs, fruit trees/shrubs, native grasses that don’t require constant tilling and chemicals. We should be pushing more sustainable options for wildlife, hunters, the soil, and water.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 18 күн бұрын
Traditional big ag is destroying our waterways with erosion and run off, in particular in areas with elevation change. Traditional meaning plowing, discing, tilling, etc. In fact studies show that if farmers around here don't farm like we food plot (all no till), there will be zero topsoil left within 60 years. You have to use your head and think big picture. Plan big picture. Be smarter. Always seek balance...as little chemical as possible for as best of results as possible.
