This Is Why You DON'T Try To Kill Weeds In High Summer Heat

You aren't supposed to try to kill weeds in the lawn during the high heat of summer for a few reasons but the most important one in my opinion is the fact that weed killers are simply not designed to work on plants like grasses and weeds when they are dealing with high temperatures.
They don't work so it's a waste of chemicals and product.

This is the reason I purchased a manual weeded to spot pull weeds in the summer instead of spraying herbicides. Great info Brian!

I need to get one myself. I can't always pull by hand and the proplugger is sometimes overkill

My neighbor should watch this. He’s tried twice now to painstakingly spot spray every weed (his lawn is at least 50% weeds if not more) in 90 and 100 degree heat. He also insists on irrigating daily. He’s to the “every other word is a cuss word” stage of frustration about why the weeds won’t die.

Great video! I am prepping for a fall renovation in my backyard and have killed off grass and weeds in high heat. However, in my front yard I am basically hand pulling weeds.

I always focus on not wanting to damage my lawn in the heat but very good point on how it's a waste of product to apply the weed killer when the weed doesn't take it up.

Can that same thing be said for warm season grass? I live in california i really only have some poa and clover in my grass, no broadleaf, I spray with spector for lawns and have no issues only the poa.

Well that's interesting. I have used that same product in early spring and have had really good results. Yeah, the weeds are popping up high fiveing each other all over. I have learned something interesting however. The front lawn is a mix of kbg, perennial rye and TTTF. The weeds in the front lawn are the most prolific. The rear lawn is 100% TTTF and there are very few weeds. Hmm..the thickness of the rear lawn is much denser than the front and I believe because of this the weeds don't get to compete. Any spot that is thin is where the weeds take opportunity. Even the spots of TTTF that are heat stressed and gone dormant are weed clear. All that being said since we can't mow weeds outside of the green grass, do you have any recommendations on yellow star thistle control? I've tried mowing it with a bagger, spraying it, tilling up the ground and spraying it, and this stuff just will not die. The plant dies away after the spray but will always come back. 🤦

JI have fallen into this trap af weeding NOW in summer heat. Thanks for helping me understand I need to wait. Question for you: The first weed that was most affected: What is the names(s) of that weed? I have it spreading in my lawn too with Rhizomes or Stolones (which ever!) So what is the name of this weed?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
It's Black Medic, out of a lawn it kind of looks like a low bushy weed and by late summer starts developing black seeds where the little flowers were before.

My lawn isn't damaged, but the weeds didn't die. I applied Tzone to broadleaf weeds 2 weeks ago because the label said to apply at least 3 weeks prior to seeding grass, and I'm planning a fall overseed with a KBG/fescue mix for the end of August. But since it's been so hot, I may have to wait until early September.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
If you cool off below 85 by end of August I would try spot spraying an FeHEDTA concentrate the day or two before you overseed. That's very good at hitting many of the broadleafs and won't affect your overseed. Your grass may darken slightly around the weed die off area but that wears off fast. It probably won't kill everything but it'll get a lot of what you want gone. I'm planning an FeHEDTA video showing how it can kill clover, hoping to get that out when our temps drop low enough to apply it safely.

I can confirm that killing off weeds and the lawn for that matter is a very slow process when there is a drought scenario with 90+ temps. My first round of glyphosate was very effective and quick to work as I had applied a day after a good rain storm (in the evening out of the sun). I ended up with green stripes, hand watered a 'beam of water' directly into the living grass like a CNC machine, then followed up with another glyphosate app that evening. At another week later, the stripes are a still a very dull green instead of dead, so that uptake is very much slower at hot temps than when temps are cooler. The apps were needed though to stay on my front renovation schedule though, planned for Labor Day weekend.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
Good luck Matt, remember that Glyphosate doesn't fully kill for 2 1/2 weeks so if you are seeing the color dissipate after a week then that's a good sign. I do believe that you'll get some residual coming back though. There's usually a bit of unwanted stuff that is dormant through the summer and it tends to come back once you start watering seed for germination...that's what I'm experiencing right now on my hill yard renovation as we speak - super annoying.

On the weed killing subject. What can be used to keep Russian Thistle at bay or to kill them entirely though out the year?
@kevingebert4316

I'd be curious that even if you applied some form of weed killer during summer that if you were to water that area, after its dried on of course, if it'll die off sooner. If its so hot, its also likely very dry and since the weed isn't growing and taking in the chemicals. Usually they'd be fried off in 2wks. But I'd agree that you'd probably do more harm than good applying something during dog days of summer and then repair that stressed or dead grass spot. I typically will spot spray with a pump sprayer or even just try pulling the thing out. Knot-weed is very annoying this time of year by me.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
I do a lot of hand pulling this time of year but I've considered putting shade over weeds to keep them cooler if I wanted to try to spray something in the 85-90 degree range. I think that would help as well as maybe a syringing of the weed after a rainfast period. I also have a video last year where I used the ProPlugger to pull the weed out of the ground then crumbled the dirt around the weed back into the hole. Worked well but it would be annoying doing that all around a full yard.

Interesting, I just used the concentrated version of this in a dial n sprayer and it killed my weeds in about a week. i sprayed when it cooled off for the day though. 90's during the day and tons of rain daily. Been a very wet flooding season for some reason this year I have always sprayed weeds in the summer and never had an issue killing them. I only use Ortho weed clear because it's the only product from the big box stores that works. I use round up 365 for all other areas and is the only product that kills the weeds and keeps them away for the whole year. I am pretty much the only person in the neighborhood that is weed free. I get everyones weed seeds blowing in my yard and drives me nuts. My lawn must be healthier this year because I've had minimal weeds. I have only sprayed roundup and a tiny section with weed clear in an area I'm expanding my zoysia here in Colorado

Wonder what the results would be if you sprayed say around 8:00 p.m. or maybe 8:00 a.m.? I think the plants are still taking in nutrients they're just not doing it in the middle of the day,l ike you said when they're stressed.

Would be a good experiment to spray three of the same weed at different times of day. If I were to guess 8am would yield the best results but you don't know until you try.

If you can muster the energy and will, pulling weeds is the best way to rod a lawn of weeds this time of year. Start planning to overseed and things will look awesome in 30-45 days 😃

I understand that the weedkiller is ineffective at high heat but my experience is if I leave the weeds alone, they spread like crazy - spurge being a typical example at this time of year which gets all over the place very quickly. If you let it go, by the time you get to September there's a lot of it in the lawn and now you apply the weedkiller you showed and yes it will kill the weeds but now you can't do the reseeding you need to do in September as you are advised to wait (a few weeks) after weedkiller application before putting new seed down. What's your perspective on that? I keep pulling the weeds (backbreaking as it is) and a bit of spot spraying so I don't lose those few weeks of new seed growth in September.

Paint them with Glyphosate or spot spray
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
I haven't had to deal with spurge infestations before but you're right, it grows very aggressively during summer heat. If I were to try to attack it I'd spot spray the plants with tryclopyr mixed with a surfactant at dawn then drape shade cloth over it if I could to help the herbicide work it's best in summer conditions. After a day or so id then consider solarizing the infected area with black plastic for a few weeks (totally optional) then reseeding grass into the area by September. Of course if the area is small then hand weeding is best option along with growing taller cut grass and making sure to seed new grass into the spots in fall and get good pre-emergent coverage in place next Spring.
@deise5989

@@TurfMechanic Appreciate the detailed response. I have about 1/3 of an acre so not that large and I've been pulling the spurge as it sometimes comes out easily and some very focused spot spraying and I've managed with it. I did switch the mower to a higher setting during the summer but I'll be doing it a little earlier next year.

@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
@@deise5989 1/3 acre is a pretty healthy size, sounds like you're doing a lot to fight it right now, each plant purs off lots of seeds so don't forget that PE next Spring, it will make a huge difference

@deise5989 Жыл бұрын
@@TurfMechanic Sorry typo there from me, more like 1/8 of an acre - 5000 sq ft. You would think PE may help but I've put PE down every year for years and still get these weeds. It's a long time from putting PE down in March (North East) to five months later in August. I think it only protects you for so long.

@@TurfMechanic I feel like a dork asking this but: Labels say don't apply during temps 90°F and above. But in evenings when temps drop below can these herbicides be applied even though the temps will rise again the next day?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
They can and they'll work better, imo early morning is best after plants have recovered a bit overnight...you can then shade them if possible for the rest of the day to help herbicides continue working as the day heats up. It's not the same as applying on a 75 degree day in May but it's better than a 95 degree day in early august.
