Attempting to ant and rodent proof the shed with expanding spray foam?? doubt it will work!

I'm over all these ants and bugs on the fresh concrete sealer. I watched on the security camera as mice and rats ran around at night time and although I don't think spray foam will stop them, it will at least stop all the bugs, so it's time to at least try bug proofing the shed. I'm sure there are many ways to do this and I'm sure this isn't the best option, but lets see how it goes and keep in mind that I don't have a clue what I'm doing, lets go :)

A short section of PVC pipe on the ground outside along the walls with rat bait helps control the rodents. About every two or three months I throw away the old bait and put fresh bait. Tree netting rolled along the outside also entangles snakes.

I'll have to try that, thanks.

I have found that a pool noodle can be cut in usable pieces to plug gaps along with the spray in foam. Also Borax is excellent in getting rid of ants. Ants will not cross a chalk line so simply putting chalk dust along the walls where they meet the floor helps detour insects

I've not had any bugs, ants, mice, etc in the shed since I did this, but you just just solve another thing I was going to do, I wouldn't have thought of pool noodles as gap fillers, great idea..

Spread steel wool and insect powder around the area and then spray foam.

Is the foam continuing to work now that a full year of weathering and wear has had a chance to work on the foam? (Great job, by the way, and thanks for showing us what you did... )
@dadsdreamshed
@dadsdreamshed 9 ай бұрын
It's been not just holding, but doing really well, I mostly wanted all the bugs to stop coming in, but I've not seen a mouse or anything in there.. we have a huge problem with snakes around here as well and not one has been in the shed.. as for the weathering of it, what bits hang out I thought would rot off and didn't, they just turned a dark brown and held well.. from inside it's no different to the day I did it.. in fact I've done my other sheds since then too :)

none at all and I didn't expect that to be honest, we have a lot of land that I don't mow often enough, so heaps of little field mice around and none of them have been in the shed since sealing it up.. I did have to mod around the roller doors though as they could of just walked in through the gaps on the side.. I might post a little video at some point on what I did there

What you think about a mortar mix instead?
@dadsdreamshed
@dadsdreamshed Жыл бұрын
I looked in to it and decided that although it would do a better good job.. At the time I'd never played with it mortar and thought I'd make a mess.. also price and ease of use came in the decision.. since then though I've had to run conduits and stuff and if I did use mortar, it would of been a pain compared to slicing a quick hole in the foam. I recon there is good and bad to all options, here we are a few years in and the foams been spot on perfect for me so far..

Spray foam won’t work mate. I’ve just pulled out an entire built in room and bathroom. Filled a 6 cubic meter skip with nasty rat infested materials. And 19 rats.
@dadsdreamshed
@dadsdreamshed Жыл бұрын
so far it's worked pretty well, it was more to stop spiders and ants then something like rats, but either way I've not seen a mouse or anything in the shed, think we're almost on a year now.. fingers crossed it will stay working :)

@@dadsdreamshed only a matter of time. you can get a product called vermaseal it’s a retro fit product that can be installed after shed build. Or you can use rat/mouse wire. I’m considering both options atm. A may trim the spray foam and use the wire. The other problem with spray foam is that it’s not water proof, and it’s uneven surface holds dirt and dust further encouraging vermin, insects and ants. It’s just dirty stuff all round after a while.
@dadsdreamshed
@dadsdreamshed Жыл бұрын
@@mrpinify Thanks mate, thats awesome, I'm not really concerned too much about mice and rats though, it was more ants and bugs that drove me crazy.. and the odd snake around here.. I'll look in to the Vermaseal that, thank you

A few people said that before I did it, but I didn't want to take the chance of it rusting with how wet it gets out here.. I looked at a heap of cheap options before I settled on this one and here we are 2 years later and I've had no issues with bugs or anything coming in.. it's been really quite good, and on my farm there are an insane amount of field mice, so I'm rather surprised it's worked

Speaking as someone who has lived through a couple of mice plagues, the only thing that rodents can't chew through is steel. If I was a betting man I would say this method of using spray foam as a rodent prevention strategy will fail spectacularly. Hopefully for your sake I am wrong, but based on previous experience I dont think I will be
