Forget borrowing millions to rent exotic cars, if you can weld well and have any business abilities you can take over a profitable business and hit the ground running. Hodges Custom Haulers has been around for decades and with a steady stream of customers lined up and waiting, they have the hard part of business figured out. However, Jhonny is looking to move on to his retirement and that opens up an opportunity for someone else to carry the torch. If interested shoot me an email and i'll connect you.

Rob, the cost of materials has doubled and sometimes tripled. Here in Canada, a sheet of plywood cost $100 last year. Used to be $20. The cost to build a ramp today would be at least double. Do a evaluation of what you paid 5 years ago versus now.

@ Mike C I am from CDN too, nail'd it! last 3 yr's of profit point on the books will tell the tale, and as point'd out by Rob himself, be a welder yourself, don't expect your skilled trades like welders to be around to hire to scale up, and did anyone think if the business sold, will all the orders on the books stay or bail, if I were a customer in this line up and wanted the Og owner to do it, I would bail.

Yeah. It's essentially common anywhere you go. People feel exploited even in 6 figure jobs because we are. Your level of tolerance for additional work and hours does go up when you get paid more but with how everything as skyrocketed people are having to adjust aggressively. That isn't to say small businesses aren't also having to adjust. That is true for those guys as well and the reality it's not really their fault for why they can't pay people more. We just witnesses multi millionaires and billionaires have their SVB bank blow up and the government swoop in to cover billions of losses yet if your business goes under and you lose out on all your investments the fed isn't going to write you blank checks. @DHD-

You say invariably, but the variable is the balance sheet. Everyone deserves to be compensated fairly for their labor, but it's a lot more complicated than you may be considering. Not every business owner is a greedy bastard.

On average payroll n benefits accounts for 33-35% of a business expenses, not many people understand how wage is calculated. You pay people more, you subsequently have to charge more. On average businesses operate on a 10-15% profit margin. You pay people more without raising your prices, technically you go out of business, PERIOD.. If you pay people more, and not raise your prices, now you have to raise production to stay in business, then yall gonna cry been overworked.. Employees will never understand business administration, until they become a business owner, and thats when most people go "ohhh this isn't as easy as I thought"..
@DHD-
@DHD- Жыл бұрын
@T H You're referring to large public companies talking about shares. That's a totally different scenario. If you think small business owners don't consider employee compensation with regard to the value those employees bring to the organization and how that affects profits and in turn the amount available for payroll, then you've never been in a position to consider such things. When you have a team of good people who rely on your decisions to feed their families, it can keep you up at night, and that's just one part of what a business owner has to juggle. It's one of those things you can't fully understand until you experience it. I don't know how else to explain it except to say that it's a lot of responsibility.
@DHD-
@DHD- Жыл бұрын
@T H I wouldn't be so sure. If he could increase productivity by offering a higher compensation I'm sure he would. Do you really think it hasn't occurred to him as a solution to the limiting factor of his own business? I guarantee he's run the numbers on paper and in his head hundreds of times.

The work is also something that you can’t find help for anymore. This is “shit welding” in this world and all welders think they’re worth $50/hr even if they’re just welding some bullshit, and you can’t pay that in this area of fab. Then you have to hire some wanna-be welders that will actually work for a reasonable rate to be profitable…but then you end up doing more rework than production. The welding/fabrication field these days sounds glamorous and high pay for anyone who can hold a stinger, in actuality it’s not even close to the perception and far more of a hassle than it’s worth. Clients constantly argue, engineers suck, employees (especially welders) think they’re the best thing since sliced bread and want far more than they’re worth usually. Just don’t….

I love how he no nothing about the cost of or fabrication manufacturing process’s but is totally willing to tell you how to do it better while selling you on a great company he’s not willing to buy himself It might be a good deal I don’t know I haven’t looked into it but his whole pitch sounds like a used car salesman about to rip someone off

to grow it you need QUALIFIED welders. With him moving on, it is likely you will not have his skillsas I am sure he is very instrumental in its operation. You do not have to look farther than these Bronco restomod/restoration places that keep growing their staff. Takes very talented people to be able to cut a vehicle in half, stretch it and put it back together so it dont break and drives straight. If it was such a "great deal" then Rob would be all over it. Would be a much better gig than renting high end sport cars to shady people and then chasing insurance claims

if ramp trucks were a highly profitable business, i would be doing it. ramp truck builds are very labor intensive with a very high material cost and low margin. they have a very limited amount and type of buyers. resale values are low as well. after being in business as long as they have, 43 orders seems low to me. i have owned several trucks they have stretched and built beds on. i would never buy another.

Yup. Investing in a proven established business with current orders and demand over starting from nothing without an established business Makes much more sense.
@OtakuSanel
@OtakuSanel Жыл бұрын
not necessarily. it depends on the liabilities (in this case the undelivered orders) he said deposits were taken so you might be on the line for making those deliveries without having the funds available to finish them so you're taking on a lot of liability without the required cashflow in place. you would then have to raise additional debt to finish those deliveries and hope nothing goes wrong.

The biggest problem I see with this company is in this day and age 99.7% of people hauling a race or show car wouldn't be caught dead hauling with an open trailer or ramp truck. I think that enclosed trailers are what is killing motorsports in general. When I was a kid you would see a race car on a trailer and your heart would skip a beat, today they see a generic white box behind a motorhome.

What's the current yearly profit, after the owner takes a pay out as ceo? If it's 80k to 113k it's a ok deal. Unless the owner is the main welder then it gets more complicated.
@OtakuSanel
@OtakuSanel Жыл бұрын
the owner is probably the main welder and drastically undervalues the work. he can't keep up with the workload and he can't afford to hire people actually willing to do the job. once you factor in the actual market rate labor to do the job there's probably no profit left in the sales.
