Buntings are some of our most beautiful birds in North America and it is a treat to see them at our bird feeders. What buntings can you expect in your area and how can we attract them to your feeder station?
Mark McKellar is a wildlife biologist with over 35 years of bird study experience. He has a degree in Fish and Wildlife Sciences from North Carolina State University and has worked for the Department of the Army, the Wildlife Departments of North Carolina and Missouri. He ran nature centers for many years in Missouri and Pennsylvania before buying the Backyard Bird Center in the Northland area of Kansas City. Mark has led hundreds of bird hikes both locally and abroad. He has taught classes about birds and other wildlife to groups of all ages and brings that knowledge to the customers of his retail business every day. Informative video--I grew up in the Kansas City area and used to see plenty of Indigo Buntings at a farm south of Louisburg. This past year I saw two of them at a feeder at our home in Maryland.

We drove to southern Utah from WI and in both Colorado & Utah I saw the lazuli bunting- beautiful birds with a lovely song! I also got to see a lark bunting at one of the rest/hike areas we stopped at in Colorado. I’d love to spend more time in Colorado and see what birds I can see in the different elevations We have lots of dickcissels in my area here too

Hey I was on a hike yesterday and was checking out the Merlin bird app like you suggested.. I never saw them but the sound ID kept picking up indigo buntings. I never knew this bird was common to SW Wisconsin (breeding range). I will be on the lookout for them in the future! Probably just on hikes tho as I live in a town of about 4500ppl. Any recommendations on decent binoculars that won’t break the bank? Thanks for all the info you share!

Indigos are pretty common throughout their range but are heard far more than seen. I always recommend Nikon binoculars. For the money, they offer the best quality from their entry level optics to the their top of the line glasses.

It’s true that the taxonomy of buntings is quite complicated. So complicated, in fact, that your description of their taxonomy is incorrect. The Indigo, Lazuli, Painted, and Varied Buntings, as well as the Dickcissel, are members of the cardinal family (Cardinalidae). I assume by “sparrow family” you mean either Passerellidae or Emberizidae. The so-called New World sparrows (including the Lark Bunting) are currently grouped in the family Passerellidae, but they were formerly in the family Emberizidae with the Old World or “true” buntings. It should also be mentioned that your description of sparrow taxonomy in the sparrow video is kind of backwards; Afro-Eurasian sparrows, which, while indeed they are closer to weavers in the family Ploceidae (don’t call them “weaver-finches”; true finches are in the family Fringillidae), were named first, therefore they are the true sparrows. American sparrows of the family Passerellidae are the impostors; they are closer to buntings (Emberizidae). “Buntings” in the family Cardinalidae could more accurately be called cardinals. As for the Snow Bunting (and its relative the MacKay’s bunting), it is a relative of the longspurs and is in the family Calcariidae. Lastly, it wasn’t especially recently that the Dickcissel got its name changed from Black-throated (not Black-chinned) Bunting. Oh, and for the record, there are at least 4 families containing buntings (Cardinalidae, Passerellidae, Emberizidae, and Calcariidae). There might even be tanagers (Thraupidae) with “bunting” in their names. I guess the lesson here is “Never trust passerine nomenclature”.

This was not intended to be a scientific explanation, purely a backyard level approach to the group.
