Hey man ! yes a shovel is a very good item to have, I normally carry one in the winter. Ohhh yeah thats a good idea, my father has his winch mounted on a hitch receiver so he is able to put it on the front or rear of his Pioneer, it's a good idea, as long as your receiver isn't under the water/mud haha

Thats a good point ! and I agree the kenetic rope would not be used as a winch line expansion, just for pulling out other machines. but in all honestly I think a winch is best for that. @@Maritimer I just want to thank you very much for all your helpful gear related videos. Especially the ones on what to have in case of emergencies. Because of you I was prepared for every situation that happened to me over the weekend while on the Hatfield McCoy trails in Matewan WV. We were traveling between Matewan and Williamson about 13 miles as a crow flies but about 30+ miles of connecting trails be tween the towns. The day started off great as I met up with a friend I have known for years the Friday night before the ride. He introduced me to his friends that had invited him. I was the new guy and unplanned guest. I hit it off right away with his friends and we ended our conversation that evening excited to ride the trails the next day. So we had a fun and pretty uneventful ride until about half way were my front left tire fell off. I have spacers that on the bite to make her more stable because of the 2” lift. I’m a big guy and the center of gravity is higher and makes her unstable without the 2” spacers all around. So having all the tools needed we separated the spacer from the rim and found that the lug nuts had backed off and as the wheel came off I broke a stud. We winched the Brute over to a tree on the opposite side of the trail and then used a tree saver strap and the winch to jack up the front end and put it all back together minus one stud. Crisis averted and back on the trail we went with us stopping every so often for water breaks. While stopped I would check the front end to make sure it was still good. Our plan was to get into Williamson and find a ATV dealer or automotive parts store and find a new stud to fix the situation. So we were almost to town when the scariest thing in my life while riding happened. We were going down a steep rocky grade and I was not going fast and being very cautious because of the sheer drops off of the trail. I had to apply some rear brake to maintain a low speed and the back wheels locked up and shifted the rear of the machine to the right forcing my front end to the left pointing me off the trail and facing a 60 foot drop. I turned into the skid trying to stay on the trail. Unfortunately at that point I was on top of a large flat rock about the size of the Brute. With the minimal bit of movement and the weight of myself and the bike I could not stop. The brute stayed going left over the edge even with the steering pushed to the right! I and the machine ended up over the 60 foot drop off of the trail. Mind you this was not a sheer drop off but you have been on a switch back coming down a mountain before so you know kind of what that looks like. I came off the machine in a tick and roll position. The machine the hit me on my right back side driving my left arm and side into the ground as it rolled over and past me down the drop of. We both missed hit a tree by inches. It came to rest up against a tree on its its side about 160 feet away from the trail and I was about half that distance were I stopped. I got my helmet off and even in shock started checking myself for any major injuries. I checked for broken bones first. My left arm where t felt the brunt of the impact check that was sore but mobile and my hand worked as well. Then I felt my legs. I didn’t feel anything was broken so I got my feet under me stood up using the tree I almost hit as support an stood up for a second with no problem and sat right back down. During this self diagnosis the mother and son in the SxS behind had stopped after seeing everything happen. De the mother was literally down the incline within seconds by my side making sure I was alive. I now call her flash. Her son went down the trail to grab the rest of the crew as they were in front of me and did not realized what had happened. So they came back and everyone was scrambling to get to me. I had to yell at them to slow down and think safely about the next steps as I didn’t want them getting hurt trying to get to me yet a I was alive and kicking. I had them secure the trail as we were not in a place where approaching riders could see anything on the blind turn getting to our point on the trail. Once that was done they made their way safely to me to check on my condition. After everyone was satisfied I was safe we started figuring out how to recover the Brute. They got her off the tree and put her upright on all fours. She started right up with no smoking or any indication of motor issues. I had to give them instructions on were all my recovery gear was and what to use. Mind you I was still sitting in the same spot and had not moved. They actually road the Brute to a position close to the trail and then used my tree saber strap and the winch to drag her out short pulls from tree to next tree until she was back on the trail. I then stood up and slowly made my way back up the hill and with little assistance got back on the trail myself with one good hand hold and pull up from my longtime friend Kirk. We gave each other a big hug and then moved to the next plan of action. We had someone else drive my brute down into town while I road in the SxS as my left side arm and hand were to sore to navigate the trails. Once in town I needed mentally some time to myself and the brute. I decided to drive her back on the main roads mostly back roads back to Matewan. I had to fight everyone on this but I knew I was okay to do that at least. I’m a hard head but no what my limits are. The story does not end here. 🤪 I got about halfway back forgetting about the trouble earlier with the spacer and rim. Well guess what the roll down the hill had done it’s damage to said lugs again. I pulled over and found a tree to use to lift the front end with the winch. Grabbed my tools and went to work removing the wheel and spacer again all with a bad arm and hand with no strength in either. I removed the spacer all together and put the wheel back on with only 3 lug nut’s because of the one broken stud. I made it back to camp and loaded the machine up after tending to my wounds. A lot of road/ trail rash. I drove 8 hours home and got there safely after being up for 25 hours. I got some video of the ride but not the accident or any footage after. Imagine the views I could have gotten. Lol If it weren’t for you and your videos I wouldn’t have been prepared for any and all the situations I faced this past weekend. I thought about this a lot on my ride home and just wanted to let you know how important your videos are not just to me but all your subscribers. You were very much with me through this entire trip because of the love and interest we share for the outdoors and our rides. I thank you for helping without knowing it to get back to my wife and son safely. This could have been a lot worse and I feel very lucky. Give your wife and daughter and Wendell a big hug and let them know you played a part in my well being and safety and that your content on KZfaq made a difference in someone’s life. Yeah Timberland is right next to Animal Land and trail 3401 is right there, you can see it at the far end of the parking lot at Animal Land. there will be a trail head right there with signs. if you look on google maps + Satellite view, you can zoom in and see a big Windmill blade on a trailer parked right there.
