As someone thats on the tailend of building his 1.8T head, this video is super awesome. Never thought of putting the tensioner in with both cams at the same time like you did. I always do intake cam, then struggle getting the tensioner and exhaust cam in place, but your method looks way better, and easier to confirm the cam position and the amount of chain links are all correct.

Really love this honestly I would pay you for rebuilt heads and then just send you mine as like a core but the cam chain tensioner if I remember correctly bank one is supposed to be 16 links between the cams and then 15 on the other one I wish you had done something closer to count the links exactly cuz I remember one of them on I think it's Bank two is in a valley and not at a peak
@PBGarage
@PBGarage 2 жыл бұрын
If only I had the time I'd offer to rebuild yours! For the links, I primarily used the arrows on the cams and took good pictures before. Honestly I was a bit nervous about this whole part but it worked out in the end. Good luck!

Thanks for the content. Rebuilding my first 2.7T and am curious about the notion of re-ringing the pistons on a 100Kmi block if I am doing a valve job. Is there any reason to replace the rings in conjunction to cleaning and lapping the valves? I believe your mate did NOT do his rings with the 2.8 head addition. My cylinders are in great shape and the rotating assembly as well.
@PBGarage
@PBGarage 4 ай бұрын
If the bores look clean and you had no reason to suspect excessive blow by, I would leave them as is. These motors commonly go to super high mileage on original rings without issue. Iron block and quality rings from the factory, if anything the replacement rings might even be less effective and reliable than what’s already in the engine bedded in and sealed up nice to the bores.
@ThorinJames
@ThorinJames 4 ай бұрын
Brilliant! Thanks for the follow up. Agreed, the bores are tip top (surprisingly) this gives me confidence. I'll save working on the rotating assembly for the next car ;-)

Thank you for the video. I have a question l hope u won't mind answering. I bled out the old oil in my lifters, lubed them as you did and installed. Will they pump up on their own when l start the engine? Thx in advance
@PBGarage
@PBGarage Жыл бұрын
You can let them sit in a bucket of oil for some time in an attempt to prime them. But yes, once you start cranking your engine over oil pressure will be fed to them. I turned my engine over (spark plugs out / injectors unplugged) for 30-60s before actually starting the car.

I remember doing that, and I dropped a cam on the floor and dented it... My B5 has been parked since. Do you guys find parts locally? I'm in your area and my parts honey hole dried up.
@PBGarage
@PBGarage 3 жыл бұрын
No, nothing local that I particularly use. I’m sure there are places around but I do enjoy the luxury of shopping online. Plus I can browse / research different quality levels of parts easier. There are a few places near Toronto I use a bunch, and shipping is a day or two.

Please turn off the background music. Why is that necessary? I don't get it. Why go through all the trouble of filming your work to try to help the audi community only to have viewers not be able to hear and pay attention to the instructions.

Those tensioner guides are total garbage. Fatal design. Bad engineering. One crack in the plastic and they fall out and lunch the engine. Heat and age makes them brittle. The plastic is wrapped around the steel part to retain it. If the steel part was made to hold the plastic in place, they would last for 500K. They don't wear out, they break around 240K km.. Don't drive on old ones.
@PBGarage
@PBGarage 7 ай бұрын
I mean 240K km isn't bad for a timing component. They are cheap and somewhat easy to replace with the motor in the car too. Just a maintenance item to stay on top of.
@Billy97ify
@Billy97ify 7 ай бұрын
@@PBGarage True, but I never saw chain guides listed as a regular maintenance item. The failure is catastrophic. I am sure glad I found out about this before failure. I had no idea. I won't even drive the affected cars I have until they are serviced. Too risky.

Yeah that Cayenne just swallowed a 16mm socket! But once his energy turns back to the 2.7T build it'll progress very quickly. Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the feedback!
